how things are shaping up once again in this round of weather. let's first though go straight to paul heggen who has more on what's been happening outside right now. obviously, wet roads. >> wet road to say the least. this will be a concern as we head through the rest of tonight with the possibility of more flooding, wind damage, dozens of those reports across bay area. let's take a look outside live from the mark hopkins hotel. you can see not just rain, but the low hanging cloud cover and the camera is shaking around. want to look at the rainfall total so far. over three inches of rain in san rafael and santa rosa. two inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and that's where the heaviest rain will fall through the rest of tonight. and into early tomorrow. right now we have light to moderate rain. locally heavy downpours dotting the radar. north of the golden gate. and across the central bay and parts of the east bay as well.
11:02 pm
not the widespread extremely heavy rain we had earlier, except in the santa cruz mountains. that is where the significant flooding threat is going to remain. flood watch remains in effect. futurecast shows the rain sticking around into early tomorrow morning. the main focus for the heaviest rain during drive time will be the southern half of the bay area. we will go through the rest of the weekend coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks so much, paul. we really appreciate it. okay, let's go ahead and take a live look at conditions on our local bridges. pretty much what you expect. this is the bay bridge. the golden gate bridge and san mateo. it is wet out there. so do what you always do when it is wet out there. slow way down. everybody is getting hit with the heavy patches of rain and wind. the north bay getting hit hard. you can see in this video. really dangerous flood waters trapped a couple of drivers on east side road near trenton and sonoma county. emergency crews were able to rescue one of the drivers but the honda was empty when they got there. mud slides reported in

sonoma county but the storm had a different impact in downtown santa rosa. andrea nakano live for us in how the storm washed out business for the night. >> reporter: yeah, this restaurant had one cancellation and one no show. that was it. and workers here like many in the bay area are wondering when this rainy season will finally come to an end. this latest atmospheric river passing through the bay area has added to one of the rainiest winters on record. >> when was the last time you have seen a storm like this in santa rosa? >> i don't think i ever have. >> reporter: ozzy was clearing the patio after the wind knocked over the umbrellas and the rain drenched the tables and chairs. >> people are not eating here, but we can't have them in the doorway. we are basically inventing the wheel as we go. >> reporter: the atmospheric river not only caused problem
11:04 pm
for businesses but also on the roads. here at stoney point and rohnert park express way, signs were put out warning drivers of a flooded road. while some turned around, others decided to go right through the water. creeks also saw water levels rise as the runoff flowed right into the waterways. the ground is saturated from the wet weather and it is creating water levels to rise, especially here at laguna de santa rosa. and at concha, it forced them to close up shop early for the night. >> we rely a lot on foot traffic. people being downtown to begin with. people don't come downtown when it is rainy or cold and windy. >> reporter: the workers hope this latest storm will finally be the last. in what has been an extremely wet season. >> i hope that we are getting good on water because i know
11:05 pm
we were in a drought for a long time. i hope we are okay with what we got so far. we want to get some more business in here. >> reporter: so sara, the businesses here, it has been very slow for the night. i know a few of the businesses may have closed early because of the rain. but one down the road really was open until 10:00. i know because i had to use the restroom there. all the businesses there in the downtown district area have been closed early. and are trying to figure out how to go on without this rain. >> first they got hit with covid. then they had a slow winter. hopefully they can bounce back. thanks andrea. when we see weather like this, we know the power could go out. that's another problem we see a lot of the last couple of months with all of this wild

weather. now pg&e says they are preparing for this. they have extra resources dedicated to helping out during this storm. here is a live look at the outage map. not too bad. certainly not like a couple of weeks ago when we had the really strong wind. the majority of the larger outages are in the south bay and one significant outage way up at the top of the peninsula, orange square, representing up to 5,000 customers currently without power. but outages are not the biggest concern for people in the south bay tonight. flooding is what they are worried about in the guadeloupe river. that is where we find our len ramirez. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well sara, we are getting a bit of a break from all that rain. let me show you what that rain has done to the guadeloupe river right here in downtown san jose. it is running fast. and it is running wide. but there's still a lot of room in this channel so it is not a major flood threat at
11:07 pm
this point. now that is from all the rain. but what about the wind? >> wire re: the storm brought high winds and bad luck for tom and his mom's white mini van. of the many trees that were twisted and bent by the incoming gusts, the tree at his san jose house blew down crushing the nose of the van and taking down live electric lines with it. pg&e came out to secure the area but it's not the first time it has happened at this house on vine street. >> last storm was in 2000 but thatone landed on top of the house. >> reporter: he said his mom wasn't home at the time and will have to get the bad news by text. it was just one of the mishaps brought by the leading edge of the atmospheric river. numerous trees fell in the los altos area. knocking out power to foothill

college. and several neighborhoods and intersections. ornamental trees were uprooted and blocked the lanes. in the santa cruz mountains, low clouds and heavy downpours made for treacherous driving on , inches of rain caused creeks and rivers to rise. >> flooding is imminent. please evacuate your residence now. >> reporter: for the second time this year, san jose police broadcast warnings to people living in camps along the banks that their lives could be in danger. mayor matt went into the camps with police escorts to urge people to get into a shelter at a community center. >> we want them to be safe. they and their pets and belongings can go to the seven tree community center. if needed we will open additional evacuation centers. we want everyone to be safe. >> reporter: and we are looking live at the guadeloupe river here in downtown san jose. this is one of the creeks and rivers in the valley where a lot of homeless camps have
11:09 pm
been historically. this is one of the places where the police department and the mayor's office were making sure that people knew to get to higher ground. last month or the month before, we had water rescues along the guadeloupe because people did not heed the warning. >> they were out there trying to warn people even then. how did all the preparations work out for them tonight? >> well preparation is everything. and this batch of storms because of the experience, back in january, people seem to be a lot more prepared. in fact, the valley water district was out today just right before the storm hit clearing out logs and debris from some of the creeks in the area. so preparation and the modeling is getting really good so we knew well in advance that this was coming and so people did get a chance to prepare and so far, it seems like the damage has been very minimal so far. >> yeah, fortunately and unfortunately, we have had a lot of practice at this the

rain will shift further and further south. but localized flooding and wind damage, still possible through the rest of tonight. the off and on rain chances will continue after that. tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow evening. saturday, saturday night. and sunday. and then another atmospheric river. a weaker one, but another atmospheric river is headed our way monday and monday night. here are all of the wind damage and flooding and mud slide reports from across the bay area just over the last 12 hours. there were over 60 of these icons across the bay area. we can't go through them all one by one. but we have been posting them on social media. been retweeting all of the reports from the national weather service as they have been related to us. a lot of trees down, mud slides, rock slides. and plenty of localized flooding especially on and off ramps and the intersections that tend to collect water. the lighter rain we have experienced the last 90 minutes or so has been enough to continue to add up. another band of heavier rain is entering the picture and this will make its way on shore between now and about 1:00 in the morning. we will see more heavy

downpours. and then for drive time, the focus for the additional rain looks like it will be for the southern half of the bay area, but still more rain aimed at the santa cruz mountains. we are concerned about the potential of more widespread and significant flooding. but even there, the rain is finally going to taper off by about lunchtime. after that, we are not going to dry out. we are still going to see lingering off and on showers as we head through the rest of the weekend. but off and on, there will be breaks in between those showers. and while the showers are going to get some locally heavy downpours, they will not last long enough or be widespread enough to lead to any significant additional flooding threat on top of the problems we are likely to experience the rest of tonight and early tomorrow morning. more rain early in the day. that moves through and more off and on showers sunday afternoon. be very flexible with any outdoor plans as we head through the weekend. a good indoor alternative in mind. total rainfall as we head through the weekend, again some of this will add up the rest of tonight. some of it will come at us in waves. another inch or two for most

baeabue heftiest amounts, we will zoom in there and highlight the burn scar in red. another two-and-a-half inches of rain for that community and similar amounts for the rest of the santa cruz mountains. just way too much water in a short amount of time. the wind is the other factor we are concerned about. gusts in the 30 to 40 mile-an- hour range now are going to diminish by tomorrow morning. the wind advisory continues through 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. it is really not going to be a big factor after tomorrow morning. this is a moderate strength atmospheric river. there is another one headed our way. monday into monday night. that one is not going to be as strong. maybe an ar2. but still, it will be just adding insult to injury when it comes to the amount of rain we have already seen. showers over the weekend. lingering showers tuesday and wednesday. then a week from today, your eyes do not deceive you. that is a rain free day at the

next storm hits. crews in donner lake have been using snow blowers on roofs and people have used shovels to clear off feet of snow. we have seen so much snow in the sierra, you have probably asked yourself what happens when all of it melts? warmer temperatures and melting snow could overflow reservoirs. paul is here to explain all of that. i asked you that question a few days ago because i saw how much snow they were getting. >> it is not jureofstoisezar rd and it depends on the depth of the snow. so let's put some snow on the screen. and of course, there's a lot more as you go up in elevation. but now, you are either getting very heavy p of that or rain. where the snow is deep, it acts like a sponge and absorbs
11:30 pm
that rain. it becomes much heavier. where the know is shallower, it will absorb the rain but melt. it's the difference between the sponge and a melting ice cube. we are facing structural stress issues on top of all of the rooftops that have not been cleared. where it melts, now it is water. but it is not just the fact that it is water. it is water flowing downhill so it will be moving into those reservoirs and moving water exerts a lot of pressure on the sides of those reservoirs and just like a roof is only as strong as its weakest point, the levees, holding the reservoirs in place, are only as strong as their weakest point. something we have to monitor as the melt continues with more snow falling in the high sierra. and of course more rain is falling around here as well. another quick update on that in a few minutes. >> yeah, no letup in sight for the rain. but don't worry. we have you covered. everything you need to know to plan your rainy friday when we come back.

let's get one last check of the forecast. still raining out there. >> and more rain on the way. so we will pan down to where the heaviest rain is falling now. in the santa cruz mountains again. that is the big concern. that is where we will be racing home. there will not be any dust collecting on our heels as we are headed out the door. let's look at the futurecast. that rain will continue through much of tonight. so additional flooding problems will be possible. tune in tomorrow morning. they will run down the late estimating issues. the rain tomorrow morning is really going to be focused on the southern half of the bay area. we will have reporters out on the field running down the latest reports of flooding, wind damage, power outages. all of that beginning at 5:00 e santa cruzunat's a lot of rain
