is stabbed at a south bay middle school, we learned about the arrest. and the cleanup after our stormy weather.>> we will probably have to dump everything, i don't know, we will figure it out. the power is still out for thousands of pg&e customers, homes and schools impacted, we are checking in with families. good afternoon, i'm ryan yamamoto. we begin with breaking news out of the south bay, police are in vista getting a reported stabbing at sunrise middle school. there is one victim, a 15-year- old with non-life-threatening injuries. the suspect is also a student and that person has been arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon. we will have the latest at 5:00. this comes just weeks after the fatal stabbing of a student at montgomery high school in santa rosa, the 16- year-old died march 1 after a fight in the classroom. the student is being charged with voluntary manslaughter,

just the other week, police arrested two other students for bringing knives to the campus. in san francisco this afternoon, a staff member found a gun on campus at james denman middle school after an altercation with two students, the district said the gun was never discharged and no reports of any injuries. those students have been detained. the bay area is cleaning up after our latest round of powerful wind and heavy rain. the atmosphere river left a huge mess in our wake, and we are looking at the damage. >> reporter: a lot of people waking up without power and with a lot of uncertainty as they start a long cleanup process. let's start in union city where a eucalyptus tree fell onto some condos. dozens of people had to be evacuated yesterday. no word on when they will be able to go home. >> just shocked, that was a nursery, and we are just really fortunate that it was

yesterday and it did not happen on sunday. >> reporter: a large tree also taking out part of a historic church in pleasanton. parishioners say it hit the nursery, you can see diapers under the tree. this is at the lighthouse baptist church, it has been in pleasanton for over 100 years. they are out this morning clearing this tree that crushed homes and cars. we spoke with one homeowner who lived in the neighborhood for more than 30 years, he said he has never seen storm damage as bad as this. >> shocking, it was shocking, just to see the amount of damage in such a short amount of time. multiple trees fell down, people lost their cars, just really sad. >> reporter: this happened on el camino and edgewood drive, you can see some downed power lines. nobody was hurt. here is another tree that fell down onto the roof of a condo complex in concord. homeowners and work crews trying to figure out how to

get rid of these trees safely. ryan? and pg&e says around 140,000 customers are still without power. right now, most of them in the south bay, that is because of things like this, some massive trees came down in saratoga overnight, which then knocked over several power lines. issues have been widespread, and you can see from this video, we spotted several traffic lights that were not working and they were working to get them going again. families had to figure out the rest for themselves. >> we will probably have to dump everything, i really don't know, we will figure it out at that point. i will get more wood for our fireplace and we will hunker down. but, the school, they are going to handle it. they said the district has been bringing food and the teachers are reassessing and doing paper learning. so, back to how we did it with pen and paper. if we did it,

they can do it. >> reporter: the power outage for some schools today, that include fremont and the campbell union high and elementary districts. no word if any of those schools plan to reopen tomorrow, but we got word that foothill college will be closed tomorrow. the real challenge with restoring the power if the extent of the damage, we have seen a lot of damage out there, primarily from vegetation, trees coming onto our equipment. >> over 468,000 people lost power at some to 70% of those customers. in oakland, crews have been out on 880 all day, working to repair a pothole in the middle of the southbound lanes. this is between fruitville avenue and high street.

the part hello pothole opened up during the latest round of rain. they had to shut down the freeway. they discovered that pothole late last night. all san mateo county parks are closed because of trees that have toppled over onto trails and parks. the saturated grass is still not safe to walk on and they will decide tomorrow when the card parks can reopen. governor newsom is surveying that storm damage today. his visit comes after they completed repairs on a levy breach over the weekend. the governor said these back- to-back atmospheric rivers are results of a climate change. >> anyone, if you have any doubt of mother nature and her fury, if anyone has any doubt about what this is all about in terms of what is happening to the climate and the changes that we are experiencing in the state of california.

>> a new state bill is moving forward, it would help leaders to link reservoir and flood control operations with new forecasting technology. on the money watch, a rocky day for the stocks as fears spread across the global markets. here's a look at how the three major index closed, the s&p losing 27 points, the dow jones also down by 280 points, the nasdaq barely closed up just about six points. and the first republic bank has seen their credit ratings greeted by s&p global ratings, the reasons depositors might hold their cash from the bank. in the meantime, there's more fallout from the closing of two major banks. cbs news has confirmed that the justice department has opened an inquiry into what exactly went wrong there.

we talked to customers who are left uncertain about their finances.>> with sbb operating with new leadership and old deposits fully backed by the federal government, it is facing increasing scrutiny. cbs news confirms the justice department launched an investigation tuesday. while the wall street journal reports, the sec also started a probe into the silicon valley collapse, according to the journal, stocks made last month by the chief financial officer will be examined closely. the former ceo has not spoken publicly since the collapse but addressed his employees friday. >> i care so much about all of you and really, it's just so incredibly difficult. >> reporter: he sold more than $3 million worth of shares in the company, fewer than two

weeks before his house of cards fell. the transaction was scheduled a month in advance and does not necessarily suggest wrongdoing. >> i expected they would be coming in. >> reporter: the enforcement lawyer said the investigation into potential insider-trading is of most interest to him. >> what they are going to look at is, what did the ceo know when he established the plan and was there any modification to the plan? >> reporter: still in shock, melanie travis tells cbs news she only got access to her businesses millions of dollars yesterday, she said her luxury swimwear business will likely lose money as a result of the chaos. >> even though it is there, it is moving very slowly, so we have a list of all our suppliers and we are just calling every single one to say we are not going to be able to pay our bill. still ahead, hitting the road for march madness, the sendoff for st. mary's and we will hear from the head coach.

were on campus today for the teams big sendoff. >> we have been talking about march madness, bragging about having st. mary's. they are heading over to the airport. i'm here with sally and stacy. tell us how you are feeling today. >> excited, this is so fabulous. i wish we were going but, we are here holding down the fort. we will be cheering them on. absolutely. >> i told them to get ready. you get excited, but you have to be ready to play though. we have experience, and we learn, that is the most important thing. it sounds obvious, but you can get caught up in all of the tournament, the march madness, all of the attention and forget to get ready. we need to be ready to play. we are getting on the bus now, and we have to start locking in. because once you get there, things are moving so fast. and before you know it, the

game will hit and at that time, you have to be prepared to play well.>> we are about to reveal our picks, as we fight to survive season two of our bracket challenge. the road to the title begins tonight and cbs news bay area starting at 7:30, we are streaming on the cbs news app. time to look at our forecast with chief meteorologist, paul heggen. i think we will have you losing to texas. >> which is the worst possible thing you can say to a graduate of texas. let's take a look at the weather out there today, i'm sure we are getting emails from the longhorns. we are dry this week, the dry weather is going to continue for a couple more days. passing clouds overhead, but

no moisture, this is good news, we are going to stay dry for tomorrow, friday, and even into the first half of saturday. there's going to be an approaching system that will have some moisture available to it, so it is possible, light showers by late friday. we do not have heavy rain in store for us, even if we see the shower chances going up a little bit for the weekend. a little bit of fog forming inside the bay and along the coast for tomorrow morning, it is not going to last for very long. generally, more sunshine. we will flip that around on sunday, more clouds for the ending of the work week, but, we don't see any green indicating any shower chances. the sun will come up saturday morning in the shower chances are going to hold off until probably late saturday afternoon into saturday evening. again, another dry stretch of weather that we have been desperately needing for the next couple of weeks. the next chance is going to be very light, i will show you that in a moment.

and next week, it could be a little bit heavier. we will take it day by day with the futurecast. on sunday, we are talking trace amounts, and the better chance is going to be saturday night into the first half of sunday, about a 10th of an inch of rain, we can definitely handle that. a little bit more on top of that on monday, but again, it is going to be light. tuesday night and wednesday, that system could be a bit more substantial, that is where we are talking about half an inch, by that point, the ground will have dried up a little bit, but we could have some localized flooding problems, but we've got plenty of time to evaluate that over the next several days. in the sierra, it is going to be a decent travel weekend, at least weatherwise. but, minimal snow amounts, even though there will be some flakes in the air through saturday night and sunday. the more substantial round of moisture with rain by tuesday

night, that will add up with snow, potentially three feet of snow next week, hard to believe. looking down toward treasure island, temperatures in the mid to upper 60s, 62 degrees in santa rosa. it is going to be chilly by early tomorrow morning, upper 30s and around 40 degrees with mostly low 40s around the bay and the coast. high temperatures on thursdays reaching 60s. just short of 60 degrees in san francisco with mid-fifties along the coast. temperatures are backing down by a couple of degrees on friday with additional cloud cover. a chance of showers on saturday, that will hold off until late in the day, a better chance saturday night into sunday and the more widespread rain is going to be monday and continuing into tuesday night for the heaviest rainfall we are going to see. we will keep an eye on it. still ahead, she sings her heart out night after night in this musical.

her and also from her family. >> a child sits down and says, mommy, i want to be an actor. they could have steered me in 1 million different directions. >> she is taking the stage by storm, starring in the touring production of the musical, she spent her high school years in concord. from a young age, she knew she belonged on stage.>> i had a lot of interest in a lot of different things, but this was something, it was just a different kind of passion. >> reporter: having the passion to pursue this was only a part of her success. >> my mom would get us up at 5:00 in the morning, and you can imagine getting children up at 5:00 in the morning, it was a handful, we were very vocal about our feelings on getting up that early. >> reporter: the support from her parents almost made the biggest difference for her. >> as an adult, i can really recognize that sacrifice she

was making everyday to take us to school and have another hour-long commute to get herself to work. >> we tried to create almost like this environment, this incubator if you will, that was just, like i said, supportive and conducive to raising kids. >> reporter: sophia and carl were there every step of the way. >> we were just there to do everything we could to make their lives pleasurable and one that they could thrive in and learn a lot. so they can figure out who they were and what they were supposed to be doing in life. their purpose. >> reporter: knowing the path she chose had a lot of ups and downs. it's an industry where you are facing a lot of rejections, and it has to be something you are passionate about in order to have the perseverance to continue to pursue it and continue to know yourself, and know that you can come to your mom and dad when you are getting people who are telling
