hammered again by a powerful storm. at least one person is dead and tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders. a bomb cyclone slammed into the bay area after a rapid drop in pressure. in the community of portola valley a man driving a sewer truck was killed when a tree toppled onto his vehicle. in the monterey bay region along the central california coast, wind gusts hit 80 miles per hour, uprooting trees and knocking over power lines. more than 200,000 homes and businesses in the state lost power. the 12th atmospheric river of the season dumped heavy snow on the san gabriel mountains in southern california. winter storm warnings are in effect for mountain areas with several feet of snow forecast. the national weather service says heavy rain and snow melt could cause more flooding across a region of more than 17 million people including most of greater los angeles and parts of arizona. a new york grand jury could

decide today on whether to indict former president trump. security precautions are being taken in both new york city and washington, d.c. u.s. intelligence sources say they're following violent online rhetoric ahead of the decision. jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: the barricades outside the manhattan courthouse here are more strategically placed around the media spilling into the street as this grand today. although, again, because all of this is happening in private, we don't really know a timetable for when a decision on an indictment could actually be made. still, law enforcement and former president trump are getting ready. several sources close to former president donald trump say he's huddling at home at mar-a-lago, surrounded by his lawyers and senior campaign advisers as he awaits a possible indictment in manhattan. sources tell cbs news the grand jury's work is almost done. it's considering whether to indict the former president in connection to allegations that

he falsified records in order to pay for the silence of adult film star stormy daniels back in 2016. she says they had an affair. trump has denied all of it. >> our enemies are desperate to stop us. >> reporter: over the past few days, trump, a candidate for 2024, has used the prospect of arrest as a rallying cry, pushing out a flurry of fundraising emails and calling supporters to protest. >> it gives him a chance to play the victim which is his favorite thing to do politically. >> reporter: several republicans have rushed to trump's defense. kentucky senator rand paul tweeted, "manhattan d.a. alvin bragg should be put in jail." responding to the pressure, a spokesperson for bragg wrote, "we won't let baseless accusations deter us from fairly applying the law." law enforcement remains on high alert with an nypd presence and barricades outside the manhattan courthouse, the d.a.'s office, and trump tower. in washington fencing around the u.s. capitol. >> police are better prepared and better informed this time

around. >> reporter: cbs news has obtained an intelligence bulletin that describes a significant increase in threats and violent rhetoric on line following trump's recent social media posts predicting the possible arrest. there's also some movement in some other criminal investigations centered around former president trump. his team over the past couple of days has been trying to stop the probes into the investigation looking at whether he improperly mishandled documents, and then also on top of that there are efforts to pause the investigation into whether he illegally tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election in georgia. >> his lawyers are busy. jarred hill in new york. thank you. abortion rights supporters are trying to stop wyoming's new ban on abortion pills. a group hoping to open the state's second clinic offering abortions filed an amended lawsuit days after the government signed the ban. wyoming is the first state to specifically ban the use of pills for abortion.

it's scheduled to take effect on july 1st. and more people could be charged in the death of a 28-year-old man who was pinned to the floor at a virginia mental hospital. seven deputies and three workers are charged with second-degree murder. a warning, the video may be tough to watch. >> reporter: the silent video shows sheriff's deputies bringing ivo otiano into central state hospital's admission room on march 6th. handcuffed and in leg irons, he never made it to a chair. about five minutes later he's laying on the floor and additional deputies step in. three minutes after that, more deputies and hospital staff pile on. at one point at least ten people are pushing into him who was pinned down for about 11 minutes. >> can you imagine the agony that ivo was enduring? >> reporter: ben crump is the family attorney.

he also represented the family of george floyd. >> a mental health crisis should not equal a death sentence. >> reporter: 20 minutes after entering the admission room, otiano remains motionless. the staff begin cpr and called 911. >> is the patient aggressive or -- >> he used to be aggressive. they're trying to put him in restraints. then he -- he's no longer breathing. >> reporter: emergency crews were not able to revive the 28-year-old. his mother saw the video last week. >> i hope that with my team beside me we will achieve justice for ivo otiano. >> reporter: seven sheriff's deputies and three hospital workers have been charged with second-degree murder. caleb kirshner represents deputy randy boyer. >> my client's involvement while at central state was tried holding his leg or conducting the tdo paperwork, or at times adjusting the leg irons.

so at no time did he have contact with his upper body. >> reporter: final autopsy findings have not yet been released, but prosecutors said in court otiano was smothered to death. cbs news, washington. schools in los angeles will be closed again today due to a planned three-day strike by nonteaching support workers. about 30,000 workers walked off the job yesterday after stalled contract talks. they were joined in solidarity by teachers shutting down the second largest school system. the employees union wants a 30% pay raise and increased staffing. school officials are offering a 23% raise and a 3% bonus. >> without bus drivers, without cafeteria workers, without custodians, the classroom doesn't run. >> i believe there strike could have been avoided, but it cannot be avoided without parties at the table.

>> classes have been canceled for more than 400,000 students. and french president emmanuel macron is set to speak on national television today after bypassing parliament to adopt a bill raising the country's retirement age from 62 to 64. a source told "reuters" macron will use a tv interview to calm things down and has ruled out withdrawing the new law. macron's government survived two nonconfidence votes on monday. protests broke out yesterday including in paris for a sixth consecutive night. more than 200 were arrested in the capital. coming up, gwyneth paltrow in court. the oscar-winning actor is accused of injuring a person in a skiing accident. and -- >> my job now is, like i said, to be more responsible, more smarter and, don't cause any of that. >> suspension over. nba star ja morant is expected to play tonight after his gun incident. his new comments about redemption and the his return. this is the "cbs morning

the cdc is warning about a drug-resistant and potentially deadly fungal infection that's spreading through health care facilities. health officials are calling candida oris an urgent threat. cases tripled to nearly 1,500 in the u.s. in 2021. the fungus can be especially harmful to hospital and nursing home patients. experts say it's difficult to identify and is often mistaken for other infections. basketball star ja morant could return to playing tonight and actor gwyneth paltro was in court for a lawsuit. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "salt lake tribune" reports gwyneth paltro thought a skier was attacking her when they collided at a utah ski resort according to her lawyer. a retired optometrist is suing her for $300,000 over the 2016 accident in deer valley claiming

that she was negligent. he says that it left him with brain damage, broken ribs, and emotional distress. paltrow says the now-76-year-old man caused the collision, is exaggerating his injuries, and is looking to exploit her wealth. the "commercial appeal" says the grizzly cleared ja morant to return to action tonight against the rockets. the all-star guard was on the bench during the team's win over the dallas mavericks monday but did not play. the nba suspended him for eight games after a social media video showed him brandishing a gun in a nightclub earlier this month. >> i made mistakes in the past that, you know, caused a lot of negative attention not only to me but my family, as well, my team, the organization. and i'm completely sorry for that. >> morant says during his suspension he went on to -- went to a counseling facility in florida to learn how to manage stress.
