shooter and the six people killed at a christian elementary school in nashville. it comes as police released body cam video from inside ths scol nashville. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we now know that the shooter had legally bought seven firearms from five different stores and that the assailant's parents felt their child shouldn't have had any weapons. dramatic police body cam video shows the moments before officers took down the covenant school shooter 14 minutes after the first 911 call. >> shots fired! >> reporter: nashville's police chief said the shooter, 28-year-old andre hale, had legally purchased seven guns from five local stores, three were used in monday's attack. investigators say hale's parents believed she had only one weapon

and sold it. police also say hale was under doctor's care for an emotional disorder. >> law enforcement knew nothing about the treatment she was receiving, but her parents felt she should not own weapons. >> reporter: averianna patton knew the shooter from middle school and says hale messaged her just before the attack, warning something bad was about to happen. >> when i initially received it, i was -- i responded in comfort. >> reporter: she alerted law enforcement, but it was too late. among the victims were 9-year-olds evelyn dieckhaus, william kinney, and hallie scruggs, daughter of covenant presbyterian's lead pastor, also teacher cynthia peak, custodian mike hill, father of seven who worked at the school for 14 years, and head of the school catherine koontz. >> she was a champion for her students. >> reporter: police say there's no evidence the victims were specifically targeted. a memorial outside the covenant school continues to grow as the community and nation comes to grips with another senseless

tragedy. >> those children should all be with us still. >> reporter: president biden told reporters planning is under falies of the victims.th there's a vigil scheduled for 5:30. both the mayor and the chief of police are expected to be in attendance. anne-marie? >> cristian benevides in nashville. thank you so much. sources tell cbs news that a federal judge ruled former vice president mike pence must testify before a grand jury investigating former president donald trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. we're going to get more now on this from robert costa. >> reporter: a major ruling with potentially historic consequences. sources say former vice president mike pence has been ordered to provide testimony to special counsel jack smith's grand jury about any illegal acts committed by former president trump, and that

private exchanges between trump and pence are not off limits. prosecutors are focused on conversations the two men had in the days before and on january 6th. >> hard to imagine a more important witness than the vice president himself telling a grand jury and potentially a jury if there were an indictment about what the president was doing on january 6th, what did he say, what were the plans that he communicated to the vice president or to others in the presence of the vice president. >> reporter: trump's lawyers had tried to block pence from testifying. pence, too, had argued he shouldn't have to testify because of his constitutional role in the legislative branch. >> the notion of compelling a former vice president to appear in court to testify against the president with whom they served is unprecedented. but i also believe it's unconstitutional. >> reporter: sources close to the investigation also say the special counsel could be building a conspiracy case against trump and his allies

with a focus on a possible plan to obstruct an official congressional proceeding. meanwhile, here in new york the grand jury investigation into trump and hush-money payments might not meet for the rest of this week, prolonging a decision on a possible trump indictment. robert costa, cbs news, new york. a maryland appeals court reinstated the conviction and ordered a new hearing in the case of adnan syed, the subject of a popular podcast serial. syed was freed last year after spending more than two decades in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. yesterday an appeals court ruled that lee's family wasn't given enough notice to attend last september's hearing that vacated the conviction. syed is not to be taken back to prison immediately. and the founder of the failed cryptocurrency platform ftx is facing another charge.dee sam bankmad miion in bribes to a

least one chinese government official to unfreeze assets belonging to his hedge fund. he earlier pleaded not guilty to charges of defrauding investors and customers out of billions of dollars. he's been under house arrest at his parents' house in california after posting $250 million in bond money. u.s. border officials say migrants injured in a deadly fire at a mexican immigration detention facility will be allowed to enter the country for medical treatment. at least 38 people were killed in monday's fire in juarez across the border from el paso texas. 28 people were seriously hurt. mexico's president said migrants fearing deportation intentionally set mattresses on fire. surveillance video shows guards quickly walking away without making any apparent attempt to release the men. the second bomb cyclone in two weeks is pummeling california. the powerful storm is dumping heavy snow on coastal mountain areas

though, sanitation workers in the catal said that they'r returning to work today and ending their three-week-long strike. jurors in gwyneth paltrow's ski collision trial heard testimony from her kids, and a major settlement with the boy stouts clears a hurdle. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "reuters" reports a federal judge upheld a nearly $2.5 billion settlement over sex abuse claims made against the boy scouts of america. the judge ruled the agreement to create the largest sexual abuse settlement fund in u.s. history was a good faith effort to resolve claims of more than 80,000 men. they say they were abused as children by troop leaders. now the plan allows the boy scouts to keep operating, and a bankruptcy judge approved it last year. "the guardian" says the jury in the ski collision trial involving actor gwyneth paltrow heard depositions from her children. a retired optometrist is suing paltrow for $300,000 claiming she recklessly skied into him at

a utah resort in 2016 leaving him with serious injuries. paltrow claims he caused the collision. her kids testified they did not see the moment of the crash. paltrow's son moses said that he remembered seeing his mother yelling at sanderson that he had run into her, and her daughter apple said paltrow was in shock and in a bit of pain after the collision. "variety" says actor jeremy renner will attend his first press event since he was injured in a snowplow accident. renner will reportedly be at the premiere in los angeles on april 11th of his new renovation show "rennervations." he broke more than 30 bones and suffered chest and other injuries when the plow ran over him near his lake tahoe home on new year's day. still to come, apple launches a new payment feature. how the company is letting you buy now and pay later.

♪ honda is recalling more than 330,000 vehicles because of issues with the side view mirrors. the company says that the mirror glass could fall out and lead to an increased chance of a crash. the recall includes the model year 2022 to -- rather, 2020 to 2022 odyssey and passport and the 2020 and 2021 pilot and ridgeline. honda says that it will replace the mirrors free of charge. your twitter feeds may be changing soon, and apple announces a new payment feature. shanelle kaul has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: u.s. stocks slid tuesday as investors tracked how the banking sector responds to the sale of silicon valley bank. the dow lost 37 points.

the nasdaq was down by 52, and the s&p 500 lost 6 points. new data reveals american home prices have been falling for seven straight months. s&p case schiller said the decline was smaller in january, likely due to a brief drop in mortgage rates. prices fell most in cities like seattle, san francisco, and san diego. elon musk is offering clarification on a new change coming to twitter's for you feed. late monday musk said the tab will soon only recommend people who pay for the premium twitter blue service, but a day later he added accounts who follow will also appear in that feed. and apple is helping you buy now, pay later. the feature allows people to split purchases into four payments over six weeks. for now apple pay later is available to randomly selected users, but the tech company plans to offer the service to
