army black hawk helicopters crashed during a routine training mission. ft. campbell said the crash in trigg county, kentucky, included two 101st division helicopters. the army said the status of the crew members is unknown. kentucky governor andy bashear tweeted, tough news out of ft. campbell with early reports of a crash and fatalities are expected. no word on the cause of the crash. meantime, hundreds came together at a candlelight vigil to paid tribute to the three children and three adults shot to death at a christian school in nashville. before the vigil, first lady jill biden visited the memorial outside the school. it came as new information about the shooting was revealed including how one victim may have confronted the shooter. jarred hill is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: you know, the head of the school apparently jumped into action when she heard gunshots. we're also learning more about the shooter who cbs news has

confirmed had weapons training before this attack. first lady jill biden laid flowers at a memorial outside the covenant school honoring the six victims of monday's tragic mass shooting. ♪ tears of grief ♪ mrs. biden attended a vigil as the city came together to mourn and try to heal. >> i so wish we did not need to be here, but we need to be here together. >> reporter: we're learning more about what happened that day. a city official says head of school katherine koonce may have confronted the shooter who's believed to have entered the building while koonce was on a system meeting. >> the witness told me that katherine koonce heard the shots, ended the zoom call immediately and abruptly left the meeting and left her office. >> reporter: police revealed more information about the suspect who was shot and killed by two responding officers. >> the suspect was in an upper level. we believe there's been some

training of being able to shoot from a higher level. >> reporter: monday's tragic school shooting has reignited the debate over what can or should congress do about gun control. >> how many children must be killed until we do the right thing? >> ultimately i think this highlights some of the mental health issues, the mental health crisis we have in this country. >> reporter: passions spilled over into the halls of capitol hill. >> children are dying! >> i know -- >> 9-year-old children! >> reporter: president biden has called on congress to reinstate the ban on assault weapons, although that's not likely in a divided congress. last june president biden did sign a bipartisan gun safety bill into law allocating resources for mental health care, as well. all that came after the uvalde and buffalo shootings. but with this congress not likely to move any further on this issue, any further reforms would likely be left up to the states. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> reporter: sure.

pope francis is in a hospital after having trouble breathing. the vatican says that it's not covid, and the pope will be hospitalized for several days. his audiences have been canceled through friday. it's not known if he'll take part in upcoming holy week events that begin this weekend with palm sunday. danya bacchus has more. >> reporter: the vatican says pope francis was hospitalized with a respiratory infection on wednesday. the 86-year-old has had difficulty breathing in recent days and will spend the next few days receiving treatment at this nearby hospital in rome. ♪ just hours earlier, the pontiff appeared to be in good spirits, kissing babies as he welcomed the crowd for his weekly audience. [ speaking non-english ] the pope asked for prayers for the 38 victims of a fire at a border detention center in mexico. afterwards, francis appeared to be in some pain as he was helped into the pope mobile though he has leg issues.

born in 1936, part of his lung was removed at 21 years old due to a respiratory infection. in 2021 francis underwent intestinal surgery at the same hospital where he is now. he became pope ten years ago this month, replacing pope benedict who resigned citing his age and the demands of the job. at the white house, president biden says he is concerned for a dear friend. >> the pope is ill now, so say an extra prayer for him. >> reporter: it's unclear if francis will be healthy enough to include the holy week observations beginning with palm sunday and ending with easter. danya bacchus, cbs news. breaking overnight, a passenger ferry caught fire in the waters off the philippines. officials say that at least 31 people were killed. about 250 passengers and crew were on board as the ferry traveled between islands. at least seven people are still missing. authorities say some people were rescued from the water after they jumped off the ferry. at least 23 were hospitalized.

the coast guard said the fire started in an air-conditioned cabin. california is again getting pounded by heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of snow in the minutes. downpours in southern california on top of already saturated areas triggered mudslides, and the possibility of more flooding. the pacific palisades neighborhood of los angeles hillsides buckled as dirt piled on top of the roof of one house. winter storm warnings are in effect for the sierra-nevada. the mammoth resort has seen a record 58 feet of snow this season. the founder and former ceo of starbucks, howard schultz, defended the treatment of workers during a heated hearing. schultz denied allegations yesterday that the company is preventing employees from unionizing. nearly 300 starbucks stores have voted to join a union. the company has not agreed to any contracts, though. >> are you aware that mlrb

judges have voted that starbucks violated federal labor law over 100 times during the past 18 months, far more than any other corporation in america? >> sir, starbucks coffee company unequivocally, and let me set the tone for this early on, has not broken the law. >> schultz said starbucks provides good wages and benefits and does not need a union. just in time for the start of the new season, minor league baseball players could be getting a pay raise. the "associated press" and other media say that the players reached a historic initial collective bargaining agreement with major league baseball yesterday. salaries will more than double. minimum pay for aaa will increase to almost $46,000. the five-year deal still has to be approved by more than 5,000 minor leaguers and major league teams, as well. coming up, caught on video. dozens of swimmers allegedly harassing dolphins off hawaii.

national military medical center six weeks ago for treatment of clinical depression. fetterman suffered a stroke last may during the primary campaign. doctors say post-stroke depression is common and treatable. "the honolulu star advertiser" says authorities are accusing 33 people of harassing a pod of wild dolphins in the waters off hawaii's big island. drone video shows swimmers apparently chasing and surrounding the dolphins on nday ofsay rs what g on during rtinepa. within 50 yards of these types of dolphins. the swimmers could fates up to a year in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. and "usa today" says a flawless, rare purplish-pink diamond is expected to fetch more than $35 million at auction. experts say the more than 10.5 carat eternal pink diamond is the most vivid to come to market. it was discovered in 2019 at a

the u.s. food and drug administration has approved the over-the-counter sale of narcan. it is the first time the federal agency has ever supported a treatment for opioid overdoses without a prescription. >> we've lost more people to opioid overdoses more recently than heart attacks. so having every home with access to narcan is a method that everyone can have access to this lifesaving medication. >> we still don't know when exactly narcan will become available over the counter and how much it will cost. the fda commissioner has called for it to be affordable. and some of the same people who have participated in the race to develop artificial intelligence are now calling for a time-out. dozens of scholars, researchers, and tech leaders including elon musk signed a letter asking for labs working on the most powerful ai systems to take a six-month break. they say the systems post profound risks to society and humanity.

they suggested experts take that time to develop protocols for lamborghini is going green, and if you like ramen there's now a breakfast option for you. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: all three major indices ended in the green on wednesday with the s&p 500 logging its highest close in three weeks. the dow gained 323 points. the nasdaq was up by 210, and the s&p 500 gained 56 points. profits are soaring at the country's largest egg producer. calmain foods reported revenue doubled and profit grew 718% last quarter as a shortage in eggs led to higher prices. a deadly avian flu has forced american farmers to kill millions of hens leading to that shortage. cowmain reported no positive tests in any of its production facilities. a new era of italian sports cars.

luxury car designer lamborghini has designed their first-ever hybrid vehicle. the lamborghini revlelto combines a gas engine with three electric engines resulting in more than 100 horsepower. they have not revealed how much it will cost, but they say it will be more expensive than the gas-only cars they currently produce. and the ramen company cup noodles announced a new flavor -- cup noodles breakfast. the limited edition option combines the flavors of sausage, maple syrup pancakes, and eggs with the company's classic ramen noodles. one executive describes this as a classic diner breakfast in a cup. this is the company's second limited edition release following last fall's pumpkin spice ramen. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this thursday morning. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. well, up next, lame ducks. how some lost ducks in florida got help from a police officer. need relief for tired, achy feet?

batters must be ready to hit by the time a clock reaches eight seconds. another big change, the infield shift is no longer allowed which means two players must be on the each side of the infield. commissioner rob manfred talked about the changes yesterday on "cbs mornings." >> we think the changes wo together in order to promote getting the ball in play, giving fans more action, less downtime. >> the bases are also getting bigger by three inches. mlb says it will create more action by having players attempt stolen bases and will also help reduce collisions. flag football is closer to becoming an olympic sport. the executive board of the international olympic committee gave the sport a green flag yesterday to move forward in the process. the full committee will have to vote on the proposal in october to make it official. if flag football is approved, it could debut in the 2028 summer olympics in los angeles.
