we just want to live like everybody else. we just want to have a space in the world to not be attacked or hated for who now at 11:00, the transgender community fighting for their lives and freedom on a day meant to celebrate them. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> good evening. i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. people rallied across the country today for transgender day of visibility. it is a time to celebrate the transgender community at a time when their rights are under attack nationwide. a ban on public drag shows was about to take effect in tennessee tomorrow, but a judge halted it stopping the state from enforcing the ban for at least two weeks

until he makes the final ruling. kentucky and nebraska are among multiple states considering bills uld ban minors. teens walked out of a nebraska school today in support of trans youth. in florida people protested a bill that would expand the state's don't say gay law. the expansion would prohibit classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades. >> the purpose of this walkout is to advocate for the safety and support of lgbtq students. >> in the sacramento area, students at two schools walked out of class after the roseville school district barred a local lgbtq group from working on school campuses. here in the bay area apple ceo tim cook tweeted out that the company stands with all trans

and gender nonconforming people. in marin county part of the festivities were led by youth in the community wanting to be seen and heard for who they are, andrea nakano with more on an event that brought the trans community together. >> reporter: the trans community has been targeted of late, especially after the nashville shooting. the events here in marin l al out ing positive on a community that's often targeted. a youth-led march through the streets of san rafael organized by a 12 and 15-year-old, hope is one of those organizers and the trans gender day of visibility gave them a chance to be seen. >> i think a lot of times it's hard to be seen when you're trans or queer because a lot of times people don't really want to see you. >> reporter: hope also stepped in front of the crowd at the open mic session at the spar center. >> sticks and stones won't break my bones, but your words, they just might. >> reporter: the center

lifts up and celebrates the lgbtq+ community. it also educates when misconceptions about the trans community surfaces like it did after the nashville shootings. >> trans people are not inherently violent. there's nothing inherently bad or scary about trans people. we just want to live like everybody else. we just want to have a space in the world to not be attacked or hated for who we are. >> reporter: friday night there was nothing but love in the room as speakers opened their heart to the crowd. >> to the half little blue boy proudly proclaiming his masculinity, i'm sorry. >> reporter: many sharing their stories of heartache and triumph. >> even if all the trans people on earth now died, more would be born tomorrow. so it's not something that can be stopped because it's not an illness. it's not a disease. it's simply a variation on the human experience and there's nothing bad about that. >> reporter: millet said the event gave her hope for the future seeing the number of youth in the crowd along with

elderly members of the trans community. suzanna humphrey is not old by any means but was inspired by the younger generation. >> honestly, it brings me much happiness. i remember a friend of mine's sister got to graduate high school as her true self and i was just so moved by that. i didn't get to do that. college graduation, i'm coming for you. >> reporter: while this is just one day out of the year dedicated to seeing and hearing trans people, it was a day that was needed to fill their hearts and souls with love and understanding. >> i think it just kind of made me feel like wow, there's like an actual day dedicated to seeing me and seeing my community and it's not -- i don't have to be invisible in like society. >> reporter: according to the human rights campaign, as of this month, there are more than 400 lgbtq+ bills across the

u.s. those bills range from limiting gender affirming care to creating bathroom bans. >> thank you. san francisco is actually home to the first legally recognized transgender district in the world. it was founded in 2017 by three black trans women. community members and activists gathered this afternoon for a discussion panel at the san francisco commonwealth club spotlighting trans perspectives and experiences and recognizing the continued fight for their rights. >> to me, you know, trans day of visibility is really about equal opportunity, humankind, and building solid relationships with each other. >> next week former president trump is expected to appear before a judge to hear the criminal charges against him. on tuesday he's expected to be arrested. the details of his indictment are still sealed, but the associated press reports trump is facing multiple charges of falsifying business records, including one felony count. here's what we

know about what comes next. former president dona trd to su authorities in new york on tuesday following his indictment by a manhattan grand jury. there will be no plea deal according to his attorney. >> this is a case that would not have been brought against another individual in this country if his name wasn't donald trump. >> cbs news learned trump will not be handcuffed but will have his fingerprints and mugshot taken just before the arraignment. sources say the indictment could include about 30 counts related to the alleged falsification of records involving hush money payments made to stormy daniels in 2016. >> paying hush money is not illegal. falsifying business records is. >> columbia law school professor john coffey expects the trial to begin before the end of this year. >> i suspect trump is going to try to postpone this trial until after the primaries. i think that will get a lot of resistance from the prosecution and it denies the voters some fundamental information. >> a lf w is not

bigger tool and finally opened the safe. altogether dorcia saysrohl$15,0 gedama and money taken. >> two different incidents, so two different claims, two different deductibles and a more than likely chance that we would either -- our insurance will go up or worse case scenario, they would cancel us. >> reporter: they decided not to file the claims after talking to their insurance broker. >> in this building for 24 years and we've been paying insurance with no losses. it's one of those things damned if you do or don't. >> reporter: farmers insurance recently dropped this owner's policy after recent burglary claims. he declined an on-camera interview but tells me big companies wouldn't insure him, so he had to buy three separate policies from different companies to cover his business. oakland and san francisco businesses have been complaining about rising crime.

in fact, someone broke into a car parked in front of car parked a block away. the in the latest crime statistics released by oakland police from january 1st to february 5th , they responded to 132 commercial burglaries, the same amount last year, but higher than the 45 cases in 2021. >> something taken from you, even if it's a small amount, it really can destroy a business. >> oakland police say they saw a spike in commercial burglaries last week. more than 12 cases in five days. so far, no arrests. still ahead tonight, imagine looking up in the sky and seeing this, deadly twisters tearing through the south and midwest. one twister shreddof during a heavy metal concert, we have that stunning video of the damage tonight. we've got less than an hour left in the month of march. not

the south and midwest got hit with monster storms that spawned powerful tornadoes today and one of them collapsed the roof of a theater in illinois killing one person and injuring 28 at the apollo theater in the city of belvedere. before 8:00 tonight people were packed in there for

a soldout metal concert. the theater's marquee out front crashed onto the street leaving debris everywhere outside. it was certainly terrifying, too, for people in arkansas. this video was taken in little rock. you can just imagine what the twister was like as it was coming towards you. look at that. the aftermath devastating. a tornado shredded flipped cars and shredded shopping centers and homes, the power unbelievable. at least one person killed, more than two dozen hurt in little rock alone. >> everything happened in like five seconds. it was like it came, boom. you hear a lot of commotion and stuff. then it was just over. i go outside and it's crazy. people got blood all over their faces. >> in northeastern arkansas communities in the town of wynn were pulverized. at least two people are dead and there are reports of people trapped in homes as we speak.

paul, there's another video of the tornado that hit little rock as well, you can see this video. >> yeah. it's been a remarkable event. this was well forecasted several days in advance, but it kept getting worse and worse as the data came together. this is likely going to range towards the top of the fujita scale the way they evaluate the damage and see how fast the winds were going within. that the storms are ongoing now, tornado warnings south of nashville, huge line of storms. let's switch over to the radar view. this is the storm system. they're getting snow. they'll wake up to a foot of snow on april 1st in minneapolis and on the other side all severe weather from ohio to kentucky down to tennessee and mississippi, makes you take hewhat we expect heading in ch. into the weekend, cool, somewhat breezy especially for the second half of the weekend. there is a chance of showers

for the north bay and along the coast tomorrow. the rest of us might see a couple sprinkles out of passing clouds. a similar pattern into early next week, the best chance of showers north of the golden gate right along the coast. let's check out futurecast. it does show more clouds in the north bay to begin the day tomorrow and a chance of showers trying to move in. this forecast model kind of fizzles that as it moves inland. others are a little more enthusiastic about developing additional shower activity. be flexible with outdoor plans in the north bay and along the coast tomorrow, but i don't think you need to cancel anything. we'll see a similar pattern playing out sunday, some passing clouds, cooler temperatures, but the best chance of showers is north of the golden gate right along the coast. that sunday system is going to bring us stronger winds. the winds pick up sunday afternoon, mostly in the 20 to 25-mile-an-hour range, some gusts closer to 30 miles an hour, below wind advisory thresholds, but strong enough considering all the tree damage we've had, there could be a few

more limbs coming down here and there and the winds will be noticeable as the entire atmosphere of the bay prress of storm systems farther to ose en up the winds time to time. in the long range, significant chance of drier than normal conditions for most of the western u.s. in the six to ten day outlook and eight to 14 day outlook from the climate prediction center. it's been a rapid shift from our very unsettled pattern and in the eight to 14 day range, which takes us easter weekend through the following week, looking like a good chance of finally above normal temperatures after such a cold month of march. maybe we can turn things around a little bit later in april. it's going to be a cool start to the month. 40s across the board dropping into a mix of upper 30s and low 40s by early tomorrow morning. we'll warm up a little bit tomorrow, should top out around 60 degrees in oakland. the a's take on the

angels at 1:07 tomorrow afternoon. game time temperature upper 50s. layer up appropriately to protect yourself from the breeze that is swirling around inside the coliseum. highs tomorrow coolest for the north bay and along the coast, near 60 around the bay with low to mid-60s inland and the east bay and the santa clara valley. temperatures step back sunday. it's going to stay cool through the middle of next week. the one chance of showers for everybody is going to arrive tuesday, but until then that best chance of showers stays north and along the coast. we'll see a gradual warming trend by the end of next week, maybe return to close to average temperatures by friday with that warming trend more likely as we head into easter weekend. we are taking a special look back at our crazy weren't. join jessica burch, darren peck, and myself monday night at 10:00 for a first alert weather special, "wild winter lasting impact." we'll see you then. >> we'll see you then. >> okay. charlie.

tonight it's no secret california gas prices have gone higher than the rest of the country's and this july the state gas tax is set to increase again most califa d aldemanddemais u on gas prices like that. regular gas costs $1.30 more here on average. a few weeks ago governor newsom called the oil industry the most powerful force on earth behind mother nature. this week he's signed a new law giving state regulators the power to penalize oil companies for making too much money. it's being called the nation's first big oil watchdog. as andrea nakano reports, the goal is to get to the bottom of why californians are paying so much for gas in general. >> reporter: vinny oliveira has to gas up to make a living.

>> i do delivery doordash. >> reporter: when prices go up, it has an impact on his bottom line. >> i feel sad because if the price is low, i earn more. if the price is high, i pay more for gasoline and the price of deliveries is the same. >> reporter: to protect consumers like vinny, the state oved a bill to focommission to investigate the oil industry. ro this will mystery of the mystery tax saying californians pay 40% more for gas and there's no explanation. >> i think the bigger issue is the overall fact that we are on average paying a lot more than we were before 2015 and getting

it's never easy with this year's installment of the golden state warriors. the sea is always somewhat rocky through two, three quarters, but can they bring the ship in is the question. tonight they trailed the worst san antonio spurs team in the entire gregg popovich era. golden state does control their own destiny to receive a top six seed but could not lose this one. the warriors want their second batch of rings but didn't look good through three. spurs on

the run. spurs take the lead with the layup and heading into the fourth, gregg popovich fired up. a 10-2 golden state run started the fourth quarter and they never looked back. jonathan kuminga, 17 points, the human highlight reel. the warriors began the game 0-3 from three, then caught fire as jordan poole crossed the foul poole at 27. steph curry led golden state with 33. less than a minute later time for some hustle. look at gary payton on the ground, looney top of the key, how about one more? klay thompson left wing, three of his 31, a 14-point game. the warriors outscored san antonio 43-27 in the fourth and win it 130-115. to the playoff push, golden state now tied for fifth in the western conference standings. they're tied with the clippers.

most importantly, the warriors now have a game and a half cushion to avoid the play-in tournament. four games remain in the season. let's go to the women's final four. the top team, south carolina versus the player, iowa's caitlin clark. she just had a 40 point triple double and followed it up with another stupendous outing, deep three's her specialty, can also get to the basket with ease. clark's second straight 40-point game setting a final four record with 41. iowa upsets the defending champion gamecocks, final score 77-73. they will face lsu sunday for the national championship. our air waves the place to be tomorrow, the men's final four from houston, san diego state, florida atlantic tips things off at 3:09. then it's miami against uconn in the night cap. >> charlie, thank you. coming up, it's almost last
