i'm anne-marie green. former president donald trump will head to new york today ahead of his historic arraignment tomorrow on criminal charges. last night on his truth social platform trump wrote that he will be leaving mar-a-lago at noon to head to trump tower. he also said on tuesday morning, "i will be going to, believe it or not, the courthouse." he is the first former president in u.s. history to be indicted. law enforcement in new york city is on alert ahead of possible protests. jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. and the security presence here outside of the courthouse in lower manhattan has been intensifying over the past couple of weeks. again, in anticipation of what we're expecting this week. meanwhile, we are learning a bit more about what likely will be happening once the former president arrives here at manhattan court tomorrow. a handful of supporters of former president donald trump gathered outside his estate in

florida as he prepares to fly to new york to be arraigned on criminal charges. >> we will very loudly and proudly say nothing. -- say not guilti. >> reporter: the indictment is still sealed, but a source tells cbs news former president trump will likely be charged with falsifying business records in the first degree. it's a felony stemming from alleged hush money paid to adult film star stormy daniels before the 2016 election. trump denies any wrongdoing. his lawyer says he'll likely motion to dismiss the case. >> somehow a state prosecutor has taken a misdemeanor and tried to cobble it together to make it a felony by alleging a violation of federal campaign violations. >> reporter: new york remains on high alert as trump's calls for protests. we're learning more about what will happen at manhattan criminal court tomorrow. two law enforcement says -- sources tell cbs news president trump will fly in on his private plane. he's expected at the courthouse on tuesday where charges will be read aloud.

all under the protection of secret service. >> he will be given a booking number. at that time he is officially, quote/unquote, under arrest. >> reporter: as the legal battle plays out, political shock waves. sunday former arkansas governor asa hutchinson, a republican, announced he plans to run for president in 2024 and says trump should drop out. >> for the sake of the office of the presidency, i do think that's too much of a side show and distraction. >> reporter: most republicans including other possible opponents are offering trump their support. this is expected to be a pretty quick trip to new york for the former president. he has already announced that he's going to be making some public remarks about all of this tomorrow night from mar-a-lago. back to you. >> should be interesting. jarred hill in new york. thank you. more severe weather is forecast this week throughout the midwest and parts of the

south, and it comes after at least 33 people were killed when dozens of tornadoes tore through at least eight states between friday and yesterday. this is what it looked like in little rock after a tornado caused massive destruction. omar villafranca reports from hard-hit wynne, arkansas. >> reporter: weekend storms dropped more than 50 tornadoes in the south and midwest. this giant funnel cloud was recorded ripping through north little rock on friday. in wynne, arkansas, people spent palm sunday cleaning up debris after a tornado hammered the small town 100 miles west of memphis. the only way into curtis mcnelly's house is through a blown-out window. whose bedroom is this? >> this is my son. >> reporter: a powerful tornado destroyed his home. >> we are all hunkered down -- >> reporter: he survived with his wife, two kids, and mother-in-law by hiding out in this hallway. >> my daughter, we told her to keep her head down.

but she -- she don't listen. and she told me she thought we were in heaven with the angels. she thought it was done. for a while i did, too. >> reporter: more than a dozen are dead in tennessee after a suspected tornado roared through several counties on friday. the same system killed one person in belvidere, illinois, when the roof of a packed concert hall collapsed with 200 people inside. in ohio, powerful winds knocked a tree down onto a house killing a 13-year-old. >> this is crazy. >> reporter: and in delaware, one person was killed when a tornado touched down in sussex county. back in wynne, there won't be monday classes at the local high school. >> when i walked out yesterday, i didn't realize that would be the last time i would teach in this classroom. >> reporter: teachers and students are praising the wynne school superintendent because on friday the superintendent dismissed classes early so

people could get out of the way of the storm, and people here are saying that saved lives. omar villafranca, cbs news, wynne, arkansas. russia opened a murder investigation after a prominent military blogger was killed in an explosion at a cafe in st. petersburg. yesterday's blast killed vladlen tatarsky who was a vocal supporter of the war in ukraine. at least 30 people were hurt. russian media said the bomb was hidden in a small statue that was handed to him as he led a discussion. no one has claimed responsibility. pope francis presided over palm sunday mass at the vatican one day after being discharged from the hospital. the 86-year-old pontiff spent three days in a rome hospital for treatment of bronchitis. the pope battled a hoarse voice as he appeared before thousands in st. peter's square. he will take part in holy week activities. and women's college basketball has a new champion. lsu defeated iowa for their

first ncaa basketball in school history. lsu coach kim mulkey is the first women's coach to win national championships at two different schools. she won three at baylor before coming to lsu. >> this is the start of things, and i'm happy to be part of it. year one, i never thought i was going to be able to do this with coach mulkey. i told her i wanted to win. i wanted a fresh start. just to be happy. i've got all three. i'm happy right now. >> lsu was able to overcome iowa's star. caitlin clark, the ap national player of the year, scored a record 191 points in this year's tournament. the men's title will be decided tonight when san diego state goes up against the university of connecticut in houston. it's the first ncaa championship game for san diego state. connecticut is going after its fifth national title. and later today, nasa is set to introduce the four astronauts who will fly around the moon. the three americans and one canadian will make up the crew

it's investigating a salmonella outbreak that's been reported in at least 11 states. there have been 12 illnesses including three hospitalizations. the cdc is trying to identify the specific flour brand linked to the outbreak. pink slips could go out this week for some mcdonald's employees, and get ready for possible higher gas prices this summer. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: wall street rallied more than 1% on friday, and the nasdaq notched its biggest quarterly percentage gain since june, 2020. the dow gained 415. the nasdaq was up 208. s&p 500 gaining 58. pink slips are coming to the golden arches. the "wall street journal" reports that mcdonald's is laying off some corporate workers this week. employees were told they should work from home today through wednesday so that the company can deliver staffing decisions virtually. mcdonald's is not saying how many people are being laid off. the chain employs more than 150,000 people globally in

corporate roles and at its owned restaurants. get ready for the possibility of higher gas prices this summer. saudi arabia and other oil producers say they're cutting about a million barrels a day from may until the end of the year. experts say the oil cuts alone could push u.s. gas prices up about 26 cents a gallon in addition to the usual increase that comes when refineries change the gas blend during the summer driving season. and they are popular with locals and tourists alike, but parisians have voted to ban rental electric scooters in the city. the referendum's in response to a rising number of people being injured and killed on e-scooters in the french capital. the three scooter operators say they transported nearly two million people in the city last year. that is your cbs "money watch" report for this monday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. ♪>> here forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ cameras caught the moment a driver lost control of his vehicle in belgium last month. you can see the car going airborne, flying 65 feet from the ground, and crashing through the wall of a sports center. the driver and vehicle landed on a basketball court that minutes before that had children playing on it. the driver was the only one injured. president biden will not be attending king charles' coronation next months. citing another people familiar with the plans, "the washington post" says first lady jill biden will lead the american delegation. u.s. officials say no president has ever attended a british coronation. dozens of world leaders are planning to go.
