>> hello, i'm sara donchey. the bay area was well represented tonight in houston. two marin county natives competed against each other in the ncaa final. uconn guard joey calcaterra from novato. darrion trammell from marin city. we're going to get to that in just a minute. but first, we'll bring in our man, vern glenn, with all the action from tonight's game. was it always pretty? there were some sloppy moments. >> san diego state dug themselves in a hole as they often do in the first half. almost go away with it in the second half. connecticut has won six games in the tournament, all of them by double digits, so there you go. this started with 68 teams, sarah, and came down to two

tonight. connecticut, they've been shark been smashing opponents. and the second half, huskies up by a dozen. novato native, joey calcaterra, with a couple of big threes. 13 minutes off the bench. san diego state somehow dug itself into that scoring hole. marin city darrion trammell with three steals. and you thought okay, are they going to get out of this? any time the huskies had an answer, and this guy, jordan hawkins, was the answer. big shot after shot. and uconn wins it 76-59. connecticut's fifth title in 25 years. again, every win during that six-game title run was by double digits. so shout out to joey calcaterra, marin catholic grad. and now sarah, he had an extra year of eligibility because everybody did if you played during the covid years. he took that extra year,

connecticut called. he picked up the phone. good decision. >> yeah, i'll say. a painful night for my dad who went to san diego state and plays basketball. but the locals still had a lot to be proud of tonight. we're not complaining about that for sure. betty yu went to two watch parties in the north bay, dividing her time. betty? >> reporter: sarah, the marin city rec center behind me was packed hours ago with family and friends of darrion trammell. they were rooting with him. i would say the walls were really shaking with excitement. they said win or lose, they will be planning a parade for their hometown hero. they watched with great intensity and joy, rooting for marin city native and san diego state guard, darrion trammell, in the national championship game. his two little sisters sat in the front row. and his middle school coach, wayne price, cheered him on with

great pride. wayne shared photos of darrion winning mvp as a middle school student, playing in a high school league. >> i became his basketball coach when he was in the fifth grade. i put him on my eighth grade basketball team because he was just way too dominant for his grade level. even in the eighth grade when he played with us, we won the championship with him. >> reporter: when he was 17, he played in the marin city league and won the championship. darrion went to school in san francisco. he plays big. >> he is fearless. i don't think he has ever played against kids or adults his age. he's always played above and up. >> reporter: san diego state did not pull off the win on monday night in their first championship appearance. but wayne knows darrion will continue to play big. >> he believed in himself. we believed in him the whole time, but he knew what his goal was. dreams are worth more than

rooting for uconn, so he still went home pretty happy tonight. >> all right, betty, thank you so much. we appreciate it. lsu, of course, won the women's championship. first lady, jill biden, said she also won second place iowa to join them at the white house. dr. biden was at that championship game. she wanted to ask president biden to invite both the teams because they both played so well. the white house has not officially responded to that request. now to politics, former president trump is in new york tonight where in a few hours he'll be arraigned on criminal charges. a judge just ruled cameras cannot broadcast his full court appearance, but photographers will be allowed to take a few pictures. sources tell cbs news tonight, trump will probably face a felony charge for allegedly falsifying business records to hide campaign finance violations related to hush money payments to stormy daniels. the former president attacked the district attorney and claims the judge overseeing the case, "hates

me." his former attorney, michael cohen, claims trump directed him to make those payments to daniels. >> i should not be held accountable for donald trump's dirty deeds. >> does this ultimately get to trial? >> i know he won't settle. that's not in his dna. he'll fight this all the way to the end. >> trump flew in to new york this afternoon from florida, but it looks like he's planning to head back to florida. his team sent out a press release for a speech planned from mar-a-lago tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. many democrats have suggested this was a long time coming and happened very critical of the former president. east bay congresswoman, barbara lee, tweeted last week no one is above the law. lee is running to replace dianne feinstein. but republicans in our state and here in the bay area, though they're outnumbered have a lot offset schism about the indictment. lauren toms talked to two of them. >> reporter: n soleil has

been a republican everceps she could vote. >> all i've seen democrats do is promise this, promise that, you know, not really care about the people. >> reporter: she's a native californian and today leads the silicon valley association for republican women. she supported trump since he accepted the party's nomination in 2016. >> those that love him, love him. you know, that's the way it is. you know he got in there and he started doing exactly what he said he was going to do. how many politicians do that? >> reporter: her support for the former president is unwavering after trump was indicted by a grand jury in manhattan, and says the effort to prosecute is politically motivated. >> it's a trumped up charge. they're trying to deflect him, so he doesn't run. make him look bad. i think it's just bogus. >> reporter: she's not alone. john dennis is the chairman of the san francisco branch of the republican party. he agrees the legal effort is politically

driven. >> this is clearly a horrific case, and there is really no justification for it. i'm sad because i think it is a terrible day for the country. it has all the appearances of the legal system, judicial system being for the political system. >> reporter: announcing the trump campaign raised more than $4 million. >> if he tries to find a way to be low key about this, which doesn't seem like him. if he does it, then he becomes a sympathetic figure. all the people who may have fallen out of the donald trump orbit may come back into the fold because it will remind them of all the things he was fighting for in 1 the former president in the bay

streets. but the san mateo police department is taking a new approach to help find long-term solutions for the unhoused. their strategy involves two people who are not caught. our max darrow explains. it's going to take time to adjust. >> reporter: victoria approaches every interaction and every conversation with compassion. something she says is incredibly important especially when interacting with people who are homeless and those who once were. >> just because they are less fortunate doesn't mean they don't deserve to hit that reset button again. >> reporter: alongside david johnson, they make up the san mateo police department's new two-person homeless outreach team. but they are not officers and they do not do enforcements. they work to connect people to resources to help them find shelter and stability. >> we have several people living up he and right now

they're not here. we're doing a followup to try to get them some services. >> spend some time with them and you will see. >> reporter: their constant presence has helped them build a good report with many people they interact with on a daily basis. making more than 2 it 00 contacts with them. and their interactions vary to rides, appointments, even court appearances. >> and we will offer shelter. most of them respond really well to that. >> and when we go looking for somebody in the community and they hear that we're looking for them, it makes them feel important. >> reporter: on this day, they wanted to check up on a person

at this bus stop. their visit involves deciphering some of the paper work and as well as an important update he cannot miss. to give them a quick and basic checkup. >> we are doing actually case management as we look at all the needs we have. and we will actually take a homeless client from beginning to end if they acknowledge. >> reporter: and enforcement actions are necessary, but they leave those times to the police. >> let's just start something, okay? >> reporter: their hope is their holistic approach will lead to more permanent long-term changes for the people they interact with. everything circles back to compassion.

highest was back in 1952. still breezy at the coast, but the wind advisory expired at 11:00 and will subside. cool temperatures will stick around in the middle of the week. it will bring two different temperatures around us. the wind gusts, still recording some, but these are a lot warmer than they were. we zoomed through the next few days, and until likely friday the earliest. the bulk of the moisture will be aimed well to the north as we head into thursday afternoon, we will see more cloud cover drifting in, but any chance of rain will be way off the coast as we head into friday, but it will be a light rainfall event. and maybe

some showers in the region with the best chance we'll see for a while and i think the showers will quiet down. right now, clear skies overhead. temperatures on the chilly side. only in the 40s. we're going to drop down into the 30s inland with the low 40s persisting around the bay and along the coast. high temperatures tomorrow still a good 7, 8, 9 degrees below normal. and upper 50s down the peninsula, struggling to around 60 degrees in san jose. that'll be one of the warm spots. when the temperatures are only topping out around 60 degrees in early april, that's closer to where we should be in late february, not early april. mid to upper 50s in san francisco and oakland. neighbors to the north also quiet chilly, in the late 50s. the seven-day forecast does include a gradual warmup. by the time easter weekend rolls around, it ettyce sunday with inland temperatures, for the most part reaching up to around the low to mid-70s for the second half

legendary san francisco drag performer, heklina, was found dead in london today leaving her friends and those who loved her shocked. she was going to perform with other well-known drag performer. no cause of death has been released yet. peach posted she is living a real life nightmare and shocked and horrified. i'm utterly heartbroken. >> heklina was a major force to be reckoned with. she came to california a generation ago, and has spawned a generation not only in the drag community, but queer activist. so her loss will be felt for generations to come. >> heklina helped open oasis in san francisco, a nightclub that's known for its drag shows and perfor. gaered the tonight to remember her. there was an empty chair on stage with flowers as a memorial.
