first time in american history, a former president will face criminal charges. donald trump is spending the night in new york city after riving from his mar-a-lago estate yesterday. later today he's supposed to turn himself in and be arraigned for his alleged involvement in a hush money payment made to an adult move star during the 2016 presidential campaign. he 20 so jarred hill is outside the courthouse in manhattan where security is very tight, jarred. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. today's arraignment is going to be the first time former president trump and really the rest of us officially learn the charges that he's facing. meanwhile today there are already protests expected outside with his supporters. nypd says they're ready. take a look. nypd installed barricades outside the new york city courthouse where former president donald trump is accept set to be arraigned this

be allowed in the courtroom to take still pictures but no video. uniformed officers are on standby. new york's mayor delivered a warning. >> there may be some rabble rousers thinking to come to our city tomorrow. our message is clear and simple. control yourself. >> reporter: city officials say there are currently no credible threats. and there has been increased security presence outside the court really within the past day or so. meanwhile in terms of what we're expecting to happen today, 2 :15 p.m. eastern time is when the arraignment is scheduled. then former president trump is going to head back to florida for a rally of sorts at his resort in mar-a-lago. the da here expected to give some remarks later on this afternoon. >> jarred hill outside the courthouse in manhattan. jarred, thank you. be sure to stay with cbs news. we will be staying on top of this story, of course.

we'll bring you the latest when donald trump arrives at the courthouse. there is new information about the former student who shot and killed three children and three adults at a nashville christian elementary school last week. police say writings left by the 28-year-old shooter show months of planning before the attack, and they also say the shooter fire 152 rounds at the covenant school before being killed by officers. authorities say the shooter considered the actions of other mass murderers. the motive for the attack remains under investigation though. yesterday thousands of students who walked out of class demonstrated at the state capitol in favor of tougher gun control laws. russia says ukraine was behind the explosion at a st. petersburg cafe that killed a military blogger. surveillance video showed the moment the bomb went off killing

vladlen tatarsky who was a vol supporter. ukraine blamed the attack on domestic terrorism. a 26-year-old russian woman was arrested. moscow released video showing the woman confessing to planting the bomb. but there are unconfirmed media rports saying she told investigators she was set up. finland is joining nato. finland and sweden applied last year. finland has more than an 800-mile border with russia. in response moscow will strengthen its forces in border regions. sweden's acceptance is being held up by nato members turkey and hungary. well, back home the university of connecticut completed one of the most dominant runs in the ncaa men's tournament history to win its fifth championship. the huskies defeated san diego state, 76-59 last night. they became the fifth team since

the school's first ncaa basketball title. it was the most watched basketball tournament in history. there were almost 10 million viewers on different networks according to nielsen. back overseas in turkey, a mother has been reunited with her baby after an earthquake seprated them. the miracle baby was pulled from the rubble five days after the earthquake hit in february. officials say she had no health problems. more than 56,000 people were killed, including the baby's father and two brothers. on saturday the 3 1/2-month-old girl was reunited with her mother in the hospital after dna tests confirmed it was her daughter. the mother who was once thought dead is continuing to be treat for her injuries. >> well, coming up, shooting lawsuit. a virginia tech teacher shot by a 6-year-old student files a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. and later twitter's logo change. a cryptocurrency meme causes an uproar. this is the "cbs morning news."

(febreze plug.) two construction workers were killed at new york's john f. kennedy airport. officials say the two men were buried inside rubble of a construction trench yesterday. they were moving utility lines when the accident took place. it took 60 firefighters to help remove them. authorities stopped all construction at the airport to conduct safety reviews. an investigation is underway to look into the accident. soon people in florida will be able to carry a gun without a permit and there's new information on the chinese spy balloon. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. cnn reports the chinese spy balloon that flew across the u.s. earlier this year was able to gather intelligence from sensitive military sites. authorities say china transmitted the information back to beijing in real time despite

the biden administration's efforts to block it. according to cnn, officials say china was able to control the balloon so it could make multiple passes over the same sites. yesterday the pentagon reiterated that any intelligence collected had limited value. "the washington post" says a virginia teacher who was shot and seriously wounded by a 6-year-old student filed a $40 million lawsuit. 25-year-old abby zwerner claims administrators at the newport school district ignored warnings the boy had a gun on the school property and was in a violent mood. lawyers for an assistant principal said zwerner might not have acted aggressively enough after she received a warning from another student that the boy had a gun. and ron desantis has quietly signed a bowing people in the state of florida to carry a gun without a conaled permit. desantis signed the measure yesterday during a private ceremony in his office.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the los angeles county sheriff's department was in hot pursuit after one of their own vehicles yesterday. authorities say a woman stole one of the patrol suvs during a traffic stop and led deputies on a half hour chase through freeways and smaller streets. she was final cornered. authorities pulled the william out of the car and then took her into custody. april's snow survey in the sierra mountains puts california into potential record-breaking territory. the snow depth and moisture measures from this year tied the record-breaking numbers from the winter of 1952 for the highest snow pack ever. this, of course, could bring record-breaking snow melt which brings fears of spring flooding. american olympic gold
