community alive how many are mourning the legend from kpix this is the late news on cbs news bay area hello,good evening the sudden death of a legend in the san francisco drag community is getting international attention tonight heklina, as she was known, died in london on tour she was 55 years old she was not just known for her performances she was keeping the drag scene alive even as it continued to shrink tributes have been popping up all over the city it comes as a time drag performers are mourning one of the tributes is and we go live with betty yu, betty? reporter: this tribute has been growing. this evening all night long people have been stopping by to pay their respects bringing

flowers and posters of heklina. tonight i spoke to people who knew her personally and those that just were big fans of her work. >> and the marquise reads "rest in power, heklina" this is on 18th and castro. ken burk and drew live in the neighborhood. >> heklina was a legend. dedicated fans of golden girls christmas show. we booked out the whole front row with his family, my family when they visited for christmas last year. and, you know, it was, we just wanted to see the tribute. reporter: they are known for their drag show and performances. there was an empty chair on stage with flowers as a memorial on monday night. >> always an incredible show with her. >> known for having a sarcastic sense of humor. she would rag

on people about, people that know about drag, drag race on tv. reporter: a few days before she was going to star in "mommy queerest." at mannys in the mission, drag king spoke about the doors heklina opened. >> gave me a lot of my chances, you know. i have a club called kingdom. and she and darcy supported the club for us and gave us nights and gave us space and as you know they are not the most popular in a sense. it is always about our queens. reporter: the cause of heklina's death is not known. her work is known in san francisco and beyond. >> incredible, edgy form of art that was as provocative as it was beautiful. >> hilarious. >> she is so funny.

>> comedian as much as an artist as well. reporter: betty, it seems like a lot of her fans had a special connection with her. it felt like they knew her, we heard that a lot. as far as people who were friends with her, her family, friends, acquaintances, what have they said about how they are processing all of this? >> they are still trying to process this. i spoke with drag performers and a owner of a local bar and nightclub here. they are just too emotional to put in words what they are feeling right now. a friend of hers says she was the og drag performer, it is going to be a huge loss for the entire community. >> that say good way to put it, betty, thank you for bringing us that story. appreciate .

they are organizing a march from san francisco city and pretest. after the march there will be a live slow in union square. today, the big story, of course, the country saw something it never has seen before. a former u.s. president in custody and facing down felony charges. former president trump says he is not guilty. he is saying, once again, he is the victim of a political witch-hunt. the da that charged him saying his investigation into trump was thorough. trump seemed serious and somber during his appearance. did not stop him from rallying his base in florida and doubling down on his 2024 campaign. >> usa! reporter: former president trump got a hero's woman back at mar mar at at.

. san francisco police are looking for a woman who was reported missing after she did not board a cruise ship here in the city. the report came in late yesterday evening. she is from out of state and supposed to board at pier 27. the police are asking for the public's help in finding her. she is a 33-year-old white woman, they say, 5 '4, black hair, brown eyes, no evidence of foul play at the moment or of her having any risk factors. a magnitude 4.5 quake hit today. it was centered about a mile, five miles away from holister. a lot of people felt it. some people felt it in the north bay and parts of the central valley like modesto. we felt it in the news room. i was

will talk about the usgs map, did you feel it? outlines on the map green colors more people raising their hands saying yes, we felt it. in the blue, lighter sensation, weaker end of the scale. but getting the reports feeling it in parts of the north bay and a lot of the east bay. a lot of reports from the east bay coming in, people feeling the rolling sensation with the earthquake and the reason is because of the way the vault system is arranged. and you can see another at the end of the east bay. they happen to run close to together. just to the southeast of holister. the energy traveling up the system. this was a relatively minor earthquake overall. just minor damage, hopefully releasing a little bit of tension along

that part of the system. let's talk about weather. we are in for more of clouds and sunshine. cool temperatures, warmer than today. we will change things heading into late thursday, thursday night. showers will be moving into the bay area. light shower activity. no atmospheric rivers heading for the bay area. just the mix of clouds, sunshine in store for us. the bulk of the moisture aimed up to the north, into oregon and just a few showers. we will see the shower chances potentially worse in the north bay before the sun goes down on thursday. the rest of us have to wait until after sunset, after midnight for the best chance of rain to move in. it will be light shower activity moving through during the late night and then early morning hours, friday morning. i would count on spots through the friday morning commute. the bulk of the shower activity will wind down at lunchtime. that is good news for the giants game. we will keep you updated on that. the home opener is friday afternoon. we should dry out later in the day on friday. the first of a few

rain chances. it looks like easter weekend will be unsettled. each rain chance will be light. few hundred inches of rain. and a similar pattern anticipated on sunday. no one of the systems will result in an all day wash out. we will keep you updated on the timing as we get you closer to easter weekend. i would not cancel anything. just be flexible and we will adjust from there. 30 around the bay. despite that chilly start, the temperatures are going to warm up into the upper 50s in oakland as the a's finish up against the guardians, temperatures topping out close to 60, layer up a bit. highs will be about four to six degrees below average. warmer than today. still, below what is normal for early april. middle 50s for the coast. lower to middle 60s in the santa

wild parrots the city's official animal. yesterday the chronicle ended an online survey and wild parrots won over sales, i thought the over the seals. recognizing it as the beloved icon of the city. the proposal will head for a vote next tuesday. and the museum is excite about it. tweeting out pictures of colorful parrots in works of art in their collection. why parrots? they were brought here as exotic pets and they got out and they breeded their own parrots. you can hear them before you see them coming. they are loud. okay, this guy is famous for eating more pork rolled sandwiches. that is next
