good morning. i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. former president donald trump is back in florida and defending himself publicly after becoming the first president in u.s. history to face criminal charges. last night at his mar-a-lago estate he lashed out against the manhattan prosecutor and judge. hours earlier he surrendered to authorities and appeared in a new york city courtroom where he was charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. cristian benevides is in west palm beach. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, wendy. during yesterday's hearing the judge asked the former president to be careful not to incite violence. still, donald trump did not mince words during a speech at his mar-a-lago estate here in florida. >> there is no case. there's no case. >> reporter: a defiant former president trump returned to florida to address supporters following his arrest and arraignment in new york.

>> this fake case was brought only to interfere with the upcoming 2024 election, and it should be dropped immediately. >> reporter: inside a manhattan courtroom tuesday, trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. a case brought on by manhattan da alvin bragg. >> the criminal is the district attorney. he should be prosecuted or at a minimum, he should resign. >> reporter: bragg's 16-page indictment alleges trump concealed hush-money payments to three individuals, threatening to reveal negative information about him during the 2016 election. they include adult film star stormy daniels, former "playboy" playmate karen macdougal, and a trump tower doorman. >> these are felony crimes in new york state no matter who you are. we cannot and will not normalize serious criminal conduct. >> reporter: so far former

thanks. ahead on "cbs mornings," we'll have continuing coverage of trump's indictment. we'll take a deeper look at the 34 felony counts and talk with his lawyer, joe tacopina. millions of people are under the threat of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms stretching all the way from the great lakes down to texas. at least two tornadoes were confirmed in central iowa yesterday, including this one near pleasantville, about 25 miles southeast of des moines. a tornado in western illinois near the iowa border caused extensive damage to homes and businesses in the city of olona. >> the roof off the shell station flew into my shop and caved the side of my building in, and it collapsed. >> reporter: were you inside? >> no. i was at work when i got a call. >> authorities say two people were trapped underneath debris at the gas station and rescued. no injuries were reported. the storms could hit some of the same areas that were devastated by dozens of deadly tornadoes last week. voters in two midwestern

states went to the polls yesterday in a nonpartisan race. democratic-backed milwaukee judge janet protasiewicz won a seat on wisconsin's supreme court. the abortion rights supporter defeated her opponent who had the support of anti-abortion rights groups. the victory means liberals will have a majority on the court for the first time in 15 years. it comes amid a pending lawsuit challenging the state's 174-year-old law banning abortion. in chicago, progressive former teacher and union organizer brandon johnson was elected mayor. the cook county commissioner defeated moderate school ceo paul vallas in a runoff. johnson succeeds mayor lori lightfoot who lost her bid for re-election when she finished third in february's contest. the last funeral for the six people shot and killed at a nashville elementary school will be held today. the head of the covenant school, katherine koonce, will be laid to rest. it comes as some of the officers who responded to last week's

shooting talked about what they encountered. janet shamlian has their story and a warning, some of the video is disturbing. >> reporter: we're hearing for the first time from police officers describing the harrowing moments inside that nashville school. >> it was readily apparent i was going to be the one to make entry. >> reporter: officer rex engelbert was joined inside the school by several others including detective mike collazo. >> once we started hearing the first shots, everything kicked into overdrive for us. we continued to hear more shots being fired. >> reporter: the police chief says some of the officers had never met but instantly worked as a team with little regard for their safety. >> they formed together, they got prepared and went right in. >> reporter: police released a search warrant revealing what was seized from the shooter's home. more than 47 items including a suicide note, several covenant school yearbooks, a school photo, as well as folders and journals with notes on firearms courses and school shootings.

investigators say 28-year-old audrey hale acted alone and fired 152 rounds in the attack which the journals indicate was planned over a period of months. the covenant school community has now laid five of the victims to rest. the police chief credited everyone from emergency dispatchers to the covenant staffers who had school keys at the ready. for those who ran toward the gunfire, the work comes with a personal price. >> my family sometimes comes second. it has to. i'm here to make sure everybody else goes home as much as -- as many can and stabilize the community as best possible. >> reporter: selfless actions. authorities say they're still searching for a motive. the items seized from the house are being reviewed by the nashville police and the fbi. janet shamlian, cbs news. russia is warning of retaliatory measures after its neighbor, finland, officially joined nato. the nordic nation's flag was raised outside nato headquarters in brussels yesterday.

"baby shark" as punishment, and there's a deal for a talc settlement. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports johnson & johnson reached a deal to pay nearly $9 billion to settle talcum powder lawsuits. lawyers for nearly 70,000 people who claim the culture's talc products caused cancer called it a significant victory. many of the plaintiffs claim the talc used in johnson & johnson's baby powder was contaminated with asbestos. the proposed settlement need to be approved by a bankruptcy court. it would be paid out over 25 years. the "associated press" reports president biden said tech companies must ensure that ai products are safe. mr. biden met with science and tech advisers yesterday to discuss the risks and opportunities that artificial intelligence poses. it comes amid the rapid advancement of chat gpt and the increase of deep fake videos.
