was taken to the hospital where he later died. this happened just a few blocks from the offices, tributes coming in from around the tech world, the ceo of mobile point said in a statement, bob was a force of nature and helped to birth android and cash apps into our world. i will miss him every day. one of the most touching tributes came from his dad who had been living with him since the death, he posted, life has been an adventure with two bachelors living together and i'm so happy that we were able to become so close these last few years. bob would give you his shirt off his back, he would never look down on anyone and adhere to a strict no judgment philosophy. he was the smartest person i have ever known, he will be missed by all of those who knew him. bob lee moved to miami late last year but he was in town for the mobilecoin leadership

summit last week and he stayed a few extra nights to see friends. thank you, our coverage continues now with lauren thompson, joining us now, what are people saying? do they feel like it is safe? >> reporter: the short answer is yes, residents and business owners tell me they do generally feel safe in this east coast neighborhood which has poured their own resources into shoring up public safety but that plays into their shock and hearing about such a violent crime. i did speak with one of the leaders of the benefit district, who tells me he is proud of the improvements that have been made here in this neighborhood but, this incident is also prompting them to look into even more ways to keep the neighborhood safe.>> we have a safe neighborhood, we have our team , and we also have a safety collaborative, where people have concerns or issues so they are sharing information, and this is what is happening

there's not a lot of nightlife that goes on in this neighborhood. again, just another question into why this violent incident occurred in this neighborhood. we did a bit of research today to show you how the murder rate compares to some other major cities. it is pretty low according to fbi data from 2019, the murder rate in san francisco was about five for every 100,000 residents, it is nearly 4 times higher in chicago and three times higher in dallas. property crimes are still much higher in san francisco compared to other major cities. the san francisco da tweeted her reaction, saying she extends her condolences to the family. she said we do not tolerate these horrific acts of violence in san francisco. mayor london breed said the city is prioritizing public safety including recently passing a budget supplemental to have more officers in neighborhoods and to investigate violent crimes. we did reach out to the mayor and the da about all of this

welcome back, we continue our community conversation after that hope profile tech initiative executive was killed in san francisco. we are having a conversation with supervisor matt dorsey, you never shied away from tough questions. any question could be echoed from some of the people who are tweeting back to you, i wanted to read some of these. this is awful news, but your post and city officials have zero confidence, i know countless people including myself have been victims of san francisco crime, no action taken, the city turns a blind eye and things only get worse.
3:10 pm
then another person, this is tragic, san francisco needs to do more to ensure this doesn't happen again. they struggle with violent crime every day, people suffering on the streets, the city needs to call on the feds to rebuild the public's confidence. aside from the fact that this is a human tragedy, this also represents the fact that we lost somebody who came here, who profited, who led the way and created technologies, and we also have a loss that is reverberated around the country that san francisco is fundamentally not safe. what do you say to that? >> i would say that is valid, but also, on the human level, i want to start by saying that my heart does go out to the family and friends and loved ones and colleagues, for the loss. i understand that this is something that is deeply unsettling, at a time when the city is struggling to come back from covid, and economic downturn, and there's a lot of public safety challenges that the city is facing. what i have said to the residence i represent in district 6 where this homicide happened is, i didn't seek this role despite these challenges, it was precisely
3:11 pm
because of these challenges that i thought this role. >> your website says, fighting for a safer san francisco, how do you do it when these things are happening over and over again, and we are hearing from your constituents say the city is turning a blind eye?>> this is frustrating for me, after many years in public service for san francisco, san francisco has been denied the benefits of a fully staffed police department for nearly 30 years. we had a charter amendment that voters enacted in 1994 to have 1971 police officers in the 24 years that the charter amendment existed, we only hit that number twice and only for a short number of days. right now, we are understaffed close to 500 officers, there's
3:12 pm
another 400 and change that are ready to retire. so, there are some safety challenges for which i think city hall deserves blame and we do have to do. i think we have successive generations of the board of supervisors, i would say that mayor london breed and i are on the same page, i think that was a contentious issue a couple weeks ago with the budget supplemental to have more funding for overtime. but the reality is, we shouldn't be in a situation where we need overtime just to keep our heads above water with the basics of police staffing. >> i wanted to give you some of the questions that i communicated to the police. i wanted to give you these questions because i want to see if you know the answers. at the time of the stabbing, how many officers were on duty in that area? >> i don't know that, but i do know that the southern is a fairly busy station, this is a downtown area, and with the homicide, it is hard to know if this is something that is attributable to patrol or lack thereof. this isn't an area where there
3:13 pm
is the kind of overt drug scene or criminal behavior that you might see in other parts of the city. that said, this is obviously a city that has violent crime problems. i would say san francisco doesn't have the level of violent crimes, doesn't have the level of homicides that many of the major american cities have.>> he also just moved to miami, also characterized as a violent city. to the conference goers, people thinking should i book there, is it safe? what is your message to them? >> san francisco isn't alone in being a major city that is struggling with police staffing, i think we are doing our part. it is going to be absolutely a top priority for me on the

board of supervisors to make sure we are doing our part to get to a fully staffed police department. what i would say is, leaving aside the horrible tragedies that we are seeing, that we saw a couple days ago, statistically, san francisco is not the worst among the major american cities. for which we are competing with and conventions. but that i understand, this isn't comforting for the family.>> i would also wonder, since it didn't work since the 70s, how are you going to get it done today and when can you get it done, get more officers in these areas? >> i'm talking to my colleagues and the mayor, but i think we have a roadmap to keep full staffing within 5 years. i think we can do it. san francisco is a city that is not without resources, we are a $14 billion enterprise, and we can be competing better for law enforcement personnel. there are cities right now
3:15 pm
that are out competing san francisco, and paying a higher recruiting balance. san francisco has to put some skin in the game here. this is something that is hurting the bottom line of the city, when you talk about the convention business that we are not getting. we talk about people who don't want to come back as commuters, maybe living in other parts of the bay area. that business downtown is supporting local businesses, it supports entry-level jobs, this is really part of the san francisco economy. and it disproportionately represents the neighborhood i represent in district 6 which is downtown south beach, this is an area where i want to make sure that we have vibrant
3:16 pm
tourism and commuters coming to work, it supports a more vibrant city. >> what i don't hear from you is a resounding confidence that san francisco is safe for visitors, for people who live here, for people to visit. i don't hear that confidence from you. >> we have to take it seriously. when people express concerns about their safety, they are not without a reasonable basis to have those concerns, and in san francisco including city leaders, they have to take that more seriously and we have got to do more to get to a fully staffed police department and make sure we are doing everything we can to make our city safer. the concerns that i hear, i'm not going to say that they are invalid. especially when we see this kind of tragedy like we saw with this homicide in the neighborhood i represent. we have to do better. in the meantime, what i would say is this is something, to the extent people in east cut in south beach, may have access to video footage or surveillance or anything they may have seen out of the ordinary in the early morning hours of april 4, to please

reach out to the police department, they have a 24 hour tip line, you can remain anonymous. it's probably more helpful if you don't, if you talk to people. this is an active investigation. i have been in touch with the assistant chief of investigations, they are pursuing leads, they are not ruling anything out. but, the more we can do to support this investigation and bring this perpetrator to justice, the better. >> and on the front end, making it safer for san francisco. thank you so much for always being willing to answer these tough questions. you always come here and talk, i really appreciate it. thank you so much for coming today. we are talking about the conversation going on on social media. people are talking about his family, so you can share your thoughts. we will have
