the republican-led house voted to oust two democratic lawmakers last night. this comes a week after they led a gun-control protest in the chamber after the deadly school shooting in nashville. the crowd in the gallery erupted into boos and chants after both expulsions. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. goodod morning. >> reporter: you know, just to show how rare it is for members to be expelled from the tennessee state house, it had only happened twice since the civil war. one member accused of widespread sexual misconduct, the other asked for bribes to kill a bill. yesterday two members were ousted after rallying for stricter gun laws. some now are asking if the vote was a matter of procedure or politics. it was an unprecedented day in tennessee politics. >> representative justin jones of the 57th representative district expelled -- >> reporter: as the republican supermajority in the state house voted thursday to expel democratic representatives justin jones and justin j. pearson.

>> it wasn't about us individually. as an attet to exp and lenca mo. they've done the opposite. >> no action -- >> no peace! >> reporter: it's a reaction to jones, pearson, and democratic representative gloria johnson leading a gun reform protest on the house floor just days after the deadly nashville school shooting. >> schools need to be safer. our communities need to be safer. >> reporter: republicans insist the three brought, quote, disorder and dishonor. >> mutiny on the house floor. a mutiny which to this body and to this state has been unknown in its 227-year history. >> reporter: supporters inside the chamber cheered as johnson survived a vote to expel her. all three of the democrats insist the final outcome was racially motivated. >> we are marching into fascism with a supermajority that has proven that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

>> reporter: the lawmakers known as the tennessee three are vowing to continue to fight for gun control.sieel es adjourns we will return, whether we're inside the chamber or outside the chamber. >> reporter: ousted representatives will still be able to run for their seats when a special ecti is held. democrats in tennessee say they're already raising money to help jones and pearson get re-elected. in the meantime, local county commissions will pick replacements to serve. wendy? >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. a colorado springs teenager is under arrest accused of planning a shooting spree at some local schools and churches. according to court documents, the suspect, william whitworth, who also identified as lily, was about a third of the way done with planning the attacks. authorities say she was turned in by a family member. no motive behind the alleged plan was given. whitworth is facing a list of charges and is scheduled to appear in court next month. a newly released government report details the chaotic u.s.

troop withdrawal from afghanistan in 2021. in the papers the biden white house takes little responsibility for what happened while laying much of the blame on the previous administration. margaret brennan explains.epter after the chaotic end to america's longest war, the white house admitted it should have started withdrawing sooner. >> clearly we didn't get things right with afghanistan with how fast the taliban were moving across the country. >> reporter: but the white house took little responsibility for executing a messy and deadly exit. a 12-page summary of the government report claimed president biden repeatedly asked military leaders if they required additional support to mitigate threats and was told no. an august suicide attack outside kabul airport killed 13 american service members. the former head of central command, general frank mckenzie, told cbs in september he advised president biden against pulling out. >> i gave advice, my advice was not followed. >> reporter: no mention of that

is made in the report. also absent a july 13th internal state department cable warning that the taliban was making rapid territorial gains and recommending that evacuation be sped up. the white house blames the trump administration and says its deal with the taliban severely constrained biden's choices. >> i'm absolutely sick and tired of hearing about this -- >> reporter: lance corporal jared schmitz died in the kabul airport suicide bombing. his father mark schmitz said the 12-page summary is an insult. >> i'm not going to listen to somebody talking about this being trump's fault. you're the president of the united states. the buck stops with you. it's your responsibility. stop making excuses. >> reporter: the long-delayed release of these after-action reports on the cusp of a holiday weekend comes after republicans in congress have threatened to subpoena information about the withdrawal from afghanistan which is one of the darkest days of the biden administration so far. margaret brennan, cbs news, washington.

breaking overnight, intensified fighting in the middle east as israel staged rare strikes in southern lebanon targeting the palestinian militant group hamas. yesterday militants in lebanon fired nearly three dozen rockets at israel. at least two people were wounded in what military analysts say is the largest rocket attack there since 2006. israeli air strikes on gaza also continued this morning. military officials said they targeted an underground network used for weapons manufacturing. the current round of violence started earlier this week after israeli police twice raided the al-aqsa mosque in jerusalem's old city. back here in the u.s., the white house is proposing new rules involving transgender athletes in schools and colleges. the measure would prevent blanket bans allowing certain exceptions to promote fairness or reduce injuries. the proposal needs to undergo a lengthy approval process and is certain to face challenges.

if approved it would become the provision of title 9 and apply to schools that receive federal funding. this morning there are calls for supreme court justice clarence thomas to be impeached. a report found that he accepted millions of dollars worth of luxury vacations over several decades from a republican mega donor. jan crawford has more. >> reporter: the report by propublica details luxury vacations taken by clarence thomas and his wife around the world, to indonesia, new zealand, closer to home from california to georgia. the tab was covered by his longtime close friend, wealthy republican donor harlan crow. democrats who are pushing for investigations into ginni thomas' political activities and efforts to overturn the 2020 election say thomas should have disclosed the travel as a gift. >> the highest court has the lowest standards. indeed only the standards which each justice in his or her own

unreviewable caprice chooses to impose on themselves. >> reporter: but legal experts say those rules did not clearly require thomas to disclose his travel, including on crow's luxury jet, because the hospitality was paid for by a friend who had no cases before the court. crow said in a statement he's been friends with the thomases nearly 30 years, and his hospitality was no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends. going forward, the rules are different. just last month under pressure from senate democrats, the rules were changed to make clear this kind of personal travel should be disclosed. >> i think everybody should err on the side of disclosure even when there are ambiguities. these rules are there for a reason. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts like his predecessor suggested that these outside committees or other government branches cannot set rules for the supreme court, and that's why there's increasing pressure on the supreme court to adopt its own code of conduct.

the nasdaq was up by 91. and the s&p 500 gained 14 points. the fda is taking the unproven premature birth drug makena off the market. the medication has been available for years despite data from 2018 showing it did not reduce premature births or result in healthier outcomes for babies. drugmaker covis pharma asked the government to allow it to phase out the medicine as it conducts more research, but the fda refused. the irs is spending $80 billion to overhaul tax collection. the ten-year plan includes investments in new technology, auditing more wealthy americans, and improving customer service. despite concerns from republicans, the commissioner of the irs says there are no plans to hire more armed agents. and disney world will resume selling annual passes to its theme parks this month. sales were suspended during the pandemic, though standing

hip-hop star coolio. the los angeles county medical examiner determined the 59-year-old died in part from an accidental overdose of fentanyl and heroin. the grammy-winning rapper was found unconscious at a friend's house in l.a. last september. in a historic first, king charles is reportedly cooperating with researchers looking into the british royal family's links to slavery. this comes after the uk's "guardian" newspaper published a document showing a royal ancestor with shares in a transatlantic slave trading company. buckingham palace says the king takes the issue, quote, profoundly seriously. the palace says researchers at the university of manchester will have full access to the royal archives. the study is expected to be completed by 2026. actor michael j. fox is getting candid about his battle with parkinson's disease in a new documentary. >> i woke up and i noticed my pinky auto animated.

parkinson's disease. >> apple dropped the first trailer for "still a michael j. fox movie" yesterday. he talks about his battle with the disease and how he continues to work and stay positive. it also looks back at fox's rise to stardom in films like "back to the future" and "teen wolf." the documentary appears on apple tv plus may 12th. and "scream 6" is slaying at the box office. the flick crossed $100 million in domestic ticket sales yesterda. it's the first installment of the slasher series to hit the milestone in a whopping 26 years. experts predict in the coming days "scream 6" is set to overtake the original 1996 "scream" movie as the highest grossing entry in north america.
