from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. it's a day before protesters are set to gather to demand justice for 2-year-old jasper wu who was killed in a highway shooting. while millions across the world celebrated easter today, some celebrations looked different this year after fires and the pandemic. >> good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andrea nakano. we begin with the devastating news out of the south bay. a 5-year-old was killed in a freeway shooting, more on that in a second. but first tomorrow there is a planned protest in front of the alameda county courthouse against a new district attorney, pamela price. demonstrators are upset over the handling of the jasper wu case. the 2-year-old boy was killed on the the

congregations are still recovering, even three years later. >> reporter: for the better part of the year during the worst part of the pandemic, father antonio sylvia's daily sermons echoed off empty pews in an empty church. pastor and parishioners kept separate for the safety of their bodies, but perhaps to the detriment of their spirits. >> i see a stronger faith in the people who come to our services on a daily basis and weekends as well. >> reporter: the congregation at san jose's church is back in the pews worshiping again in person, but the pandemic was a test of faith. the church live

11:08 pm
rebirth and this year it may also be the story of the evolution of faith in a post pandemic world. a big easter celebration at salesforce park this afternoon, hundreds of kids came out for an egg hunt. many say they were there mainly looking for chocolate and stickers. there were also special appearances by the easter bunny. the day also included live music, face painting and other games, but the most competitive event was that easter egg hunt. some professionals talked about their egg hunting strategies. >> try to find a good like spot where like no one is really there so you can like get all of them. >> stay the closest to where you see a bunch of eggs. >> similar scenes in santa clara county, gilroy gardens hosting its first ever
11:09 pm
springtime easter celebration. lots of people came out to enjoy the warm weather, the rides, and the entertainment. in general, it was a fairly perfect easter weekend. temperatures finally climbed into the 70s the first time in months, so people were out soaking up the sun. tourists were packing fisherman's wharf and pier 39. here's an impartial evaluation. >> oh, man, it was beautiful. it felt like summer at the ballpark today. >> enjoying the views of the city, the spring flowers that are all in bloom. >> i'm going to keep playing until the sun comes down. every time every day we're outside. >> you should have known it was going to be a great day weatherwise because april 9th lines up perfectly with the san francisco hinge. if you've never heard of that, join the club. darren peck is here to explain this phenomenon. >> a play on stonehenge. dozens of people lined up on the top of the hill on california street to look east yesterday morning for the sunrise. for
11:10 pm
this perfect alignment of the sun between the buildings and right over the bay bridge, in fact, let's play that back because it's not just that it came up between the buildings. it's that for yesterday morning and this morning, this is one of two times through the year where the sun lines up perfectly like that and this has become a thing now for people. you can see all the people sitting on the hill there. if you misses your chance, if this looks like something you'd want to see, you'll get another chance in september. the only reason we get that is because of a quirky alignment of san francisco streets. the sun comes up in the east. everybody knows that. in terms of where that falls on a compass, that should be 90 degrees. if north is zero, exactly east is 90 degrees, but you only get a sunrise at 90 degrees east from your perspective on the equinox, which happened several weeks ago on march 20th. our streets are not perfectly aligned north/south. take a look at van ness and you can see california here. we're tilted. so if we tilt our perspective a little,
11:11 pm
california is actually angled 80 degrees. california street is angled 80 degrees. let's put that right on the line. since we're a couple weeks past the equinox, the sun does not rise at exactly 90 degrees anymore. it's shifted farther north, as it does as we head into summer. now from your perspective, you don't look directly east at 90. you've got to look directly east at 80 and that's where the sun's going to come up and that's exactly the way our city grid is aligned thanks to a quirk in the way the streets are laid out. if you missed your chance this morning, you'll get another one to see this show because we'll do it again when the sun comes back to 80 degrees on september 3rd and 4th and then you can get your california henge. we had incredible weather today, well above average. it won't last all week. i'll show you why coming up in the complete first alert forecast. >> pretty cool stuff, darren. we'll also look at the growing avalanche dangers across multiple states, including in the sierra.
11:12 pm
we'll meet
11:13 pm
well, avalanche dangers have locked down ski resorts across a number of states caused by deep snowbanks mixed with rising spring temperatures. >> the worst of it is in utah
11:14 pm
where crews spent the last few days digging out of multiple recent avalanches, only recently able to reopen the road to the little cottonwood canyon resort. guests and workers were stranded for days. >> pretty sketchy just driving up to work kind of holding your breath hoping you get up here. >> i've been in the canyon 40 years now and i've never seen an extended avalanche closure like this. we're dealing with spring wet slides as opposed to winter cold slides, which can be almost as damaging. >> there are similar concerns for the sierra. some are trying to remove the massive build-up of snow before it all starts to melt. well, that's all caused by warmer temperatures which, of course, andrea is a fan of and she'd like more of this, if you don't mind. >> yes. >> you shall have it. >> great. >> next weekend we'll be back here, but as nice as it was today, we aren't keeping that all week. there's a cooldown, some wind. we aren't quite done
11:15 pm
with the pacific trying to throw us some curve balls. it's not going to be rain, but it's not like we kind of hit our stride today, 76 in santa rosa and concord, 75 in livermore. we showed you and shared with you what some of the folks had to say who were out at oracle park today and all around. wherever you were in the bay, you noticed this. this was the first time we got into the mid-70s since late october last year and it happened fast because yesterday it was mid- to upper 60s. it was a nice weekend all around, but today definitely stood out. we'll get more of it next weekend. tomorrow's going to be close to this actually, but after that there's a little cooldown. current numbers are already in the mid- to upper 50s. watch this system right here. we aren't getting rain from that. it's going to break this pattern. that's looking ahead
11:16 pm
to monday. there's another one behind it, same story. we don't get the rain. we'll play this back again. we'll look at the wind, which we'll get. that will kind of help us visualize where the cold front is because now you can see it. that's tomorrow evening. weak cold front right there. that slides through the bay as we get into tuesday morning. the breeze will pick up, cooler air filtering in. tuesday will be cooler and breezy and wednesday the next one comes down and that one really intensifies the northerly winds along the coast. that's where things will get pretty windy. on futurecast you can see how the screen lights up here for tuesday. those are the winds on the coast at 40 miles an hour. wednesday it does it again. you'll see the screen light up again. national weather service may have to put wind advisories out for that along the coast, not to mention just watching the cold air invection. the deeper the shade of blue shows you in the mid-and upper levels of the atmosphere how we'll be importing cooler air, but not tomorrow. tomorrow we start out
11:17 pm
around 50 for the morning low, 45 in the north bay. we look at daytime highs tomorrow and here today. these are a degree or two cooler. i don't think you'll notice much difference. technically today was the warmest. as we look across the seven-day forecast, you can see the change does start to set in noticeably by tuesday. san jose on this first image shows it best. you're 75 tomorrow, 67 tuesday and then back down into the mid-60s by wednesday. mid-70s come back next weekend. when we look at the microclimates, we see the same story. you don't have to cool down that much in the north bay and inland valleys for the east bay, you only go down to the mid-60s and right back up to the mid-70s again. guys, back over to you. >> thank you, darren. after the break, the recent ruling on access to the abortion pill is causing a divide even within the democratic and republican parties, both sides trying to rein in the more radical wings of their party. what got into the warriors
