i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. we begin with the issue of abortion rights which could be headed back to the supreme court. at the center of the debate the fda-approved drug mifepristone. friday two federal judges issued conflicting rulings over access to the abortion pill. now after more than 20 years, its availability in the u.s. could be in jeopardy. jarred hill is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, wendy. for now people can still access mifepristone despite the ruling out of texas. the long-term future is uncertain as cases work their way through the courts. the white house considering defying the judge's order if it has to. the white house is preparing to fight a texas federal judge's ruling that seeks to invalidate the fda's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. the secretary of health and human services hinted sunday that the administrations could ignore it. >> everything is on the table.

the president said that way back when the dobbs decision came out. >> reporter: protests broke out over the weekend in response to the trump-appointed judge's ruling. it says the fda improperly approved the medication 23 years ago ignoring, quote, legitimate safety concerns about the drug. the department of justice says it will appeal the ruling which was not set to take effect until the end of this week. >> we think that the judge totally got it right. >> this ruling is an extreme abuse of power. >> reporter: the fda insists the drug is safe and that serious complications are rare. >> when you turn upside down the entire fda approval process, you're not talking about just mifepristone you're talking about every kind of drug. >> reporter: an obama-appointed federal judge blocked any changes to the availability in 17 states and the district of columbia where democrats sued. >> we've got two different sets of law which kind of means it has to go to the supreme court.

>> reporter: the fallout has prompted a debate among republicans. >> we can win this issue at the ballot box if we show up in reasonable positions. if we have our head in the sand we're going to lose. >> reporter: the abortion issue helped propel a liberal judge to the state supreme court in elections last week. big picture, this may not be just be about an abortion pill. that texas judge's ruling, as we heard, could call into question the legality of any fda-approved drug going forward. back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. breaking overnight, educators at rutgers university are on strike for the first time in the school's nearly 260-year history. it affects nearly 70,000 students at three campuses in new jersey. the faculty unions represent about 9,000 professors and other workers. they're fighting for better pay and increased job security. teachers were advised to shut down classes, stop grading, and cancel preplanned events. governor phil murphy is calling

on university and union officials to meet in his office today. two expelled black democratic tennessee lawmakers could get their seats back. nashville's metro council is holding a special meeting today on whether to reappoint justin jones. and on wednesday, the shelby county commission will consider whether to reappoint justin pearson. both were expelled last week for taking part in a gun-control protest inside the state house chamber. a third democrat who's white and also took part in the demonstration was spared expulsion by one vote. new clashes erupted in the middle east at a time when three religious celebrations come together. israel launched air strikes against targets in syria yesterday. that came after militants in syria fired rockets toward israeli-controlled territory. as imtiaz tyab reports, the violence didn't stop christians, jews, and muslims from taking part in peaceful prayers. >> reporter: in the narrow alleyways of jerusalem's old city, heavily armed israeli

another tense scene as jewish groups were escorted through the courtyard. days earlier it was stormed and palestinians barricaded inside were beaten with batons and the butt of rifles. triggering rocket fire from armed palestinian groups in gaza, lebanon, and syria. israel responded by carrying out strikes in each of those places while separate palestinian attacks in the west bank and tel aviv killed three people. ♪ as the violence continues to soar, those of all three faiths were united in praying for more peaceful times. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, jerusalem. texas governor greg abbott is looking to pardon a u.s. army sergeant convicted of murder. on friday, sergeant daniel perry was found guilty of fatally shooting an armed protester in 2020. it happened in austin during nationwide demonstrations against police violence and

racial injustice. defense attorneys said the shooting was in self-defense after the man approached perry's car with an ak-47. there was history at the masters. jon rahm became just the fourth spaniard to win the tournament. the 28-year-old closed with a three under par yesterday. he started the day four shots back and rallied for his second major. he also became the first european player to win both a masters and the u.s. open. he didn't realize that until reporters told him after the tournament. >> out of all the accomplishments and many great players that have come before me, to be the first to do something like it, it's a very humbling feeling. thank you, by the way, because i don't know how i would have found out. >> the victory also makes rahm number one in the world again. 52-year-old phil mickelson tied for second. he shot a seven under 65 which is the lowest round in masters history by a player over 50. he's also the oldest player to finish in the top five at a mas.

search for victims after a building collapse. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports eight people are missing after the building they lived in collapsed in france. the five-story building exploded and came down yesterday near the port of marseille. the neighboring building also collapsed. five people suffered minor injuries. more than 100 firefighters rushed to extinguish flames in the rubble as piles of burning debris hampered rescue operations. an investigation is under way. the "delaware news journal" says three people shot inside a shopping mall in stable condition as the search for a suspect continues. police were called to the christiana mall saturday for a report of a shooting in the food court. investigators believe it was the result of an altercation between an unknown number of suspects, and at least one of the gunshots victims. shoppers were evacuated from the mall. >> we just saw everybody running, and eventually the fire alarm got pulled. and we weren't sure what was going on. so we just decided to run with

the crowd. >> police say five other people were also injured, but they were not shot. forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ we're learning more about what we'll see during next month's coronation ceremony. buckingham palace says king charles and queen camilla will travel from the ceremony at westminster abbey back to the palace in the 260-year-old gold state coach that has been used at every coronation since 1831. >> the coach is huge. you might be able to tell from how i'm standing beside it. it's nearly four meters tall, over seven meters long. it weighs four tons. because of that, it can only be used at a walking pace which really adds to the majesty and the stateliness of this great royal procession. >> in a 2018 documentary, the late queen elizabeth called her journey from buckingham palace to the abbey in the coach horrible and not very comfortable.
