a 5-year-old girl killed in a freeway shooting in east bay. what we've learned about the victim. in the same county, community members rallying for

justice in another deadly shooting of another child on the same freeway. what activists are calling for and demanding from the district attorney. we're there. thank you so much for joining us, i'm reed cowan. so chp is still looking for whoever shot and killed a 5-year-old on 880 over the weekend. we're learning more about the girl killed in the tragedy. anne makovec joins me right now. anne, this is another layer of horror. she was just a couple of weeks shy of her sixth birthday? >> reporter: yes, she was. and she was on her way to a birthday dinner that night when she was shot. wrong place, wrong time, just riding in the car. eliyanah crisostomo was pronounced dead at the hospital saturday night. but the organizer of an online fundraiser said she died within 30 seconds of getting hit by the gunfire. she's described as a fun loving little girl who loved life, and was excited to celebrate easter. it all happened just after 6:30 on

saturday night, still daylight on 880 south near the dixon landing exit near boer chp s leasd ont. information on where the shot have come from. eliyanah's parents were in the car, but they were not injured. nobody has been arrested. as of now, they have not identified any suspects. now we've seen a number of deadly freeway shootings in recent years. reid, you just referred to this one the most high-profile case, the death of jesper wu in november of 2021. that same among, morris, a 29-year-old mother of two, shot and killed near the freeway. was killed on 880 in oakland. what the chp said was a road rage incident. now the alameda county d.a., pamela price, said last year alone shots were fired 154 times on bay area freeways. >> family stories behind every

one of these tragedies. anne makovec, thank you for the update. demonstrators are upset over the handling of the jasper wu case calling for justice. charging three men with murder in this shooting death. people at today's rally say they are worried about thrally here for showed up are concerned that the people responsible for jasper wu's death will not be prosecuted. just a few of the signs that showed up in a rally to support jasper wu's family. they take issue with the wait district attorney is handling the jasper wu case. 2-year-old jasper wu was killed by stray gunfire in what is described as a gun battle between rival gangs on 880 in oakland back in

2021. price says they will be held responsible and facing very serious charges. however, her office has not made any decisions regarding the charges. and they're concerned the d.a. will be lenient with the suspect and that the wu family won't get justice. >> all the things you could get. >> reporter: the d.a.'s office will be transparent about the case as it moves through the justice system. the three suspects are due for a preliminary hearing later in april. >> max, thank you. last year the state would install 200 new traffic cameras in response to these freeway shootings. they were suppose to buy them last summer to be installed this year. see what we're following up on this. juliette goodrich is trying to get answers on when the cameras will be up and running. we'll let you know what they said tonight on the evening addition. the former san francisco fire commissioner who took a

brutal beating last week shared his first public statement since the attack. his attorney also released surveillance video of the attack. we need to warn you before we roll that footage, you might find it upsetting to watch. let's go to the video right now from one of the cameras belonging to don carmigiani's family. the 53-year-old's parents live near laguna and chestnut. the video doesn't really show what led up to the attack, but they say these men have been a nuance in that area for a while now. they've called police in the past, so this time he went over, responding to his motherrest 's house, and asked them to leave. let's talk about that man. the 24-year-old derek dodi, he's been charged with three felony assault and battery counts. by the way he did not show up for the scheduled court appearance this morning. that's been pushed to thursday. his public defender says she believes her client

was acting in self-defense. she claims don carmigiani pepper sprayed dodi some time before the beating. but carasev's friends don't buy that. it left mr. carmigiani with a number of injuries, a fractured skull, a fractured jaw. he does though say he expects to make a full recovery. the city of oakland is clearing up the last remaining residents of the wood street homeless encampment. dozens showed up this morning to protest. the city says the site is a safety hazard as they plan to sell the land to build more than 100 affordable housing units. police are looking for the man they say sexually assaulted a woman at this underpass along california avenue. get a good look at this sketch of the suspect. police say he struck the victim from behind, then assaulted her, then took her

cell phone. that victim, by the way, is recovering at a hospital. in san francisco, investigators want to find out who let the 12 independently owned mini buses on fire just after 10:00 last night. played out in the potrero neighborhood. crews responded quickly. they got everything under control in an hour. nobody was physically hurt, but financially it's a big loss. first alert weather now. we're going to see a lot of sun this week, but people waking up early this weekend. got a real treat here. here is darren peck. by the way, it was a beautiful weekend. >> and the california hinge happened in the morning. have you seen this before? it's a play on stonehenge. this is the top of the hill, where the cable car runs. watch the sun come up right in between the buildings. and that looks cool, and what we need to do with this is play it back. if you

have ever been on the california line, the cable car, then you know that is perfectly aligned with that tower and for another day in september, they will line up perfectly where that is kind of like stonehenge. you need to rely on the grid of san francisco. you can see the way the city is laid out. ne the streets don't go exactly north, southeast? when the sunrises, it rises in the east obviously. on the equinox, which is march 20, it rises dead east, which means 90 degrees. in other words if you're looking north, let's say that's zero degrees on the compass. but that's equinox. since then the sun has been marching northward as we get into summer, so it's not rising at 90 degrees now. now it's rising at 80 degrees, going further north. that's where the city grid comes in. notice van ness, tilted that

getting to the top stories around the country now. police say a 23-year-old bank employee opened fire at his former workplace in louisville, kentucky today, killing four people before police shot and killed him. nine others

including two police officers rushed to the local hospitals there. police called out, found the lone gunman still firing shots. we heard from one man whose wife works inside that building. she duckto elter,along with on woinsidethe talkedher. i've seen her,fine. e >> i had a very close friend that didn't make it today. and i had a close friend that did beneath. >> our community will come together. we will find ways to love and support one another and the families and the friends that have been directly impacted. >> the city of louisville has set up a family assistance center for anybody affected by the shooting. authority is asking for the public's help as they start into another investigation on a mass shooting in our country. california has secured an emergency stockpile of an abortion medication after a federal judge in the state of

texas ruled to halt the fda's approval of yet another abortion drug. the u.s. justice department just appealed that ruling and we're watching that one closely. so the texas judge says the fda ignored safety concerns when it approved the drug. mifepristone, 23 years ago. but the fda insisted the drug is safe. the judge put his ruling on hold for one week to allow for a challenge. that's the same day as the texas ruling by the way. the u.s. district judge in washington state issued a counterruling, ordering federal officials not to make any changes. and in states where democrats have sued to protect the drug's availability. we're also following several headlines about tesla. they're going to produce 10,000 megapack energy batteries per year they say. separately here in the united states, tesla owners have filed a class action lawsuit. they claim the company's employees internally shared private and embarrassing videos from their vehicle's cameras without their consent.

and that it comes instead of regulators of a north carolina crash where a teenager was hit and injured when a tesla that may have been operating under a partially automated driving system failed to stop for a school bus last month. let's come back to the bay area now. all of our recent rains have given way to blue skies with a lot of pretty flowers behind me in full bloom. in fact our chopper caught this view in the livermore hills with bad news though. if you're sneezing out there or coughing, that means there's pollen, right? it's hitting many of you who suffer from seasonal allergies. so we asked the doctor from stanford on advice on how to deal with them. >> reporter: first you want to avoid the allergen, you know, don't go outside on the high pollen days, or wear masks to protect yourselves. hopefully we still have masks laying around. and then clean up your home environment. get a whole house or hepa filter and get rid of the nasal allergens. and if that doesn't work, you can

then stop the histamine and inflammatory cascade with over-the-counter medications like antihistamines or topical steroids or decongestants. if that's not working, then go see your doctor to get a prescription for things like nasal or inhaled clinical steroids or new modulators. >> so we know a lot of you are like is this allergies or something deeper? we asked how do you tell if you have an allergy or a virus or a cold or even covid. >> both the viral infections and allergic reactions activate the immune system with common symptoms like congestion and runny nose and headaches. if you have asthma, cough, shortness of breath, the viral infection usually lasts five to ten days and also has fever and chills, muscle aches, diarrhea. and an allergic reaction has like what you have, much more watery, itchy eyes, and skin reactions. and it lasts as long as the trigger is around. so when in doubt, just go see your

doctor, who can test for the more dangerous viral infections like covid, rsv, or influenza. and also lp you with symptom treatments. >> and if all out fails, a nice hot cup of tea. first alert weather now. darren, my friend, you say things will be changing yet again? the first sign of that is the fog, which we just saw it. it is the first time this year that we have had a full fledge takeover. and this looks like july. it hasn't looked like this really probably since about last october when we had fog. it was sticking around for a while. the fog horns were going off as early as 5:00 a.m. look, you're even getting the fog fall coming over the marine headlines. we went from nothing to overdrive. the warmup inland has a lot to do with this. we were in the mid-70s yesterday, in the mid-70s today. temperatures only in the 50s at the coast. it is very much a

summer kind of transition. you can see it is now gone all the way over alcatraz. it's not staying like this all week. in fact probably going to start breaking up tomorrow. then on wednesday, it's really going to get busted up. i'll show you why. we'll see that on the big picture. but today it's 77 in concord. this is what drives these kinds of things. it's the warmup inland, the relative coolness near the coast. and may gray son-in-law a few weeks away, but we'll typically see this start to turn on april like wow from night to day and just really turned on. so here is the bigger picture story with the weak system to the north. we're not getting rain from that, but we're going to feel it. here comes the other one on wednesday with two of them. we're going to watch that again and it will bring us back. instead of watching the rain, we'll watch the wind. that's the cold front right there. that's coming through tomorrow. here is your time stamp over there. that's tuesday morning. cold front will come through. this likely breaks up the marine layer, so we don't have anywhere near as impressive as tomorrow.

wednesday it's stronger, getting rid of the marine layer. that's a much stronger northwesterly flow. this goinco temperaturread ross y, buit is breezy and cool. mainly at the coast. that's tomorrow afternoon. and we're looking at gusts in the mid-40s. that is a very windy day at the beach. it's not all that bad for the rest of us, but it's breezy. these are cool northerly winds both days on tuesday and wednesday. and you'll see what this does in the seven-day forecast. first a hook at morning lows, which will bring us down in the mid to low 50s. that's not all that bad, but kind of what we did today. tomorrow's numbers are different. it is only mid to upper 60s over here inland, so you don't have as big of a temperature spread. it won't be as gloriously nice as the last two days, but it will be close. and then as we would get into wednesday, we really start to pull in that cool air. san francisco in oakland first. we won't see much of a difference here. you can see the temperatures, they will only change slightly, but they do

cool down quite a bit now. now watch the difference here. we're going to put north bay valley on the top ask san jose the bottom, you microclimate is by looking at it by the inland east bay valleys against the coast. that's when you're really going to see that summer spread. and you're starting to kind . back to you. >> thanks. hey, dub nation is gearing up for the playoffs. the warriors will play the first round against the sacramento kings at golden one center on saturday. golden state took care of business against portland yesterday. the warriors made 12 threes and they set an nba record with 55 points in the first quarter, by the way. they went on to win 157-101. and to clinch a spot in the post season. this had be the first time the warriors and the kings will play each other in the playoffs. it should be a good time. a lot of buzz about this matchup. one person posted, "as the kings fan who currently

all right, welcome back everybody. look at these beautiful lanterns. they're kind of a staple when you go to chinatown. a lot of them were destroyed because of the recent storms. they're kind of looking worse for the where, right? now bridge builders in our community saw a need and they're stepping forward to replace them. but as betty yu is about to show you, there's a cost. >> you can tell that the hail has really done some damage here. >> reporter: chinatown's famous lanterns that have dressed up grand avenue for the last ten years took a beating during recent storms. they were no match against the hail, heavy rain, and strong winds. mother nature left them in such bad shape. an entire block of lanterns had to be taken down. many that are left are torn. >> we are pretty heartbroken actually. and a lot of the store owners afterward asked la

>> reporter: lanterns symbolize love and prosperity. jenny chan, associate director of the chinatown merchant's association has partnered with the non-profit be chinatown to launch a fundraising effort for three blocks of new lanterns. cofounder lily low said they are more than just a photo op. >> i feel safe because it's a symbolism of chinatown. and without, you know, the lantern, i feel like chinatown, there is no color. >> actually a lot of people come to chinatown to take photos of the lanterns, and then they tag us in it. it helps us a lot with sf tourism because people look at instagram and then they figure out where to go. >> reporter: in fact during our interview, we saw people doing just that. tanging photos with the lanterns in the background. each string of lanterns costs

about $1,000 including labor and materials. this time around they plan to hire contractors to properly install each string and to improve its life span. >> this is something new and challenging for us, but we're going to find innovative ways to really secure it with better brackets for the new lanterns and also if we overfundraise our amount, we're also going to install lanterns on the 500 block of grand avenue since the store owners there always complain about safety. >> reporter: its goal is $50,000. the two groups are thankful for the outpouring of support so far. they hope they can replace all the lanterns before the summer tourist season. >> hopefully. they're beautiful. still ahead, not the typical furry friend you would expect at a police station. one department though using this rabbit

now a police department has a rabbit in its ranks. an officer in yuba city found this rabbit in the middle of the road, ran it over to an mall control, but nobody claimed the rabbits, so now he's one of them, a part of the team. they named him officer percy after the street where he was found. the rabbit has its own tiny canine harness and serving as the department's wellness and support officer. it looks like he is very cuddly. >> and now he can help catch the rascals out there. >> yeah.
