disturbing pattern on bay area highways and why a similar case has sparked protest. >> from kpix 5, this is the lat news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i am sara donchey. we have been covering stories like these for years. shootings on bay area freeways. they have taken a very real and disturbin toll on some local families. th latest victim is a five-year-ol girl. this saturday, eliana was in a car with her family headin to a birthday dinner when a bullet hit her car in the fremont area. they tried to get help but eliana died before her birthday. this case is similar to jasper wu. his family was caught in the middle of a gang shooting as they drove through oakland. just a few months afte jasper died, alameda county sheriff's recruit david nguyen

died instantly. i looked at the bullet holes on the side of the vehicle. there is no way a five-year-old could survive that. >> reporter: ashley, a family friend, choked back tears as sh described the final moments of eliana's life. she was sitting next to her brother who is 11 months old in the back of the family suv, when she was hit by gunfire. this was on south boun 880 in fremont. the shooting happened saturday night. the da before easter. less than a week before her sixth birthday. >> they had easter baskets on the kitchen table. her brother won't even open his. he said, mom, i can't open my easter basket because my sister is not here. >> reporter: the mood was celebratory. ashley said the family went to outback steakhouse in fremont for both the dinner, but it was closed. so they decided to head to the one in the . milpitas. >> they didn't know what to do. they drove a little faster to

try to get away. >> reporter: the family spotted a chp officer who was conductin an unrelated traffic stop. >> they jumped out of the car and said help me, help me. she was hunched over in the back seat. >> reporter: no arrests have been made nor suspects identified. >> she loved disneyland. she loved minnie mouse. she loved her shrimp with white rice and butter. >> i don't know how you did tha interview. it is just hard to listen to that. i think the first thing people will think o is, what about the person who did this? what do we know? >> reporter: just so tragic, sara. chp says they have no description of the car or shooter, but they are exhaustin every lead in the case. they also said they are partnering with other agencies to build a strong case. >> our hearts go out to the family. just so incredibly sad. thank you, betty.

so today in oakland, protesters called for justice for that other young freeway shooting victim, jasper wu. three suspects are in custody without bail. as max darrow reports, people who rallied today are worried that the new district attorney will pursue lesser sentences. >> reporter: signs held at a rally to show support for jaspe wu's family and to protest pamela price. two-year-old jasper wu was killed by stray gunfire in what has been described as a gun battle between rival gangs on 8080 in oakland back in 2021. the suspects are due in court this month but the people who showed up for this rally and the wu family are concerned that the new district attorney will not prosecute the suspects to the fullest extent of the law. amon those in attendance was virginia, who, like husband kevin, was murdered by a

senseless act of gun violence i oakland in 2021. >> we need justice so that this type of senseless, senseless crime can stop. >> reporter: they said the suspects are facing serious charges and will be held accountable. however, in march, the d.a. ordered her office to stop extending prison time unless they get support from a supervisor. in a statement, the d.a. office said it has not mad decisions regarding this case. they share the information with the wu family last week. after the rally, storch and shared a message from the wu family. >> we lost an innocent and beautiful life. as a mother, i cannot accept nor forgive mysel for not being able to help my son seek justice. i am asking for the maximum sentencing leve under the law. >> reporter: to oakland pastor

that has been used for over two decades. this protest was at sa francisco's ferry building. on of the groups who rallied, the raging grannies, said they have been fighting for abortion rights for decades. >> we fought for abortion right back then. we were activists back then. we also knew plenty of people who got pregnant, needed abortions and had to hav illegal abortions. we don't wan to go there. we know that it is wrong for everyone, and it is not good healthcare. >> california is responded by stockpiling a different abortio pill than the one that was banned. governor gavin newsom said they have secured the alternate brand. meanwhile, an alternate rolling restricts th pill from being restricted in 1 states. the biden administratio is also appealing the ruling. just had, this was supposed to be san francisco's flagship

san francisco's mid-market, a home for some of the world 's best-known tech companies, has seen a fair share of problems over the past few years. open drug use, drug dealing and crim have been common complaints. bu there has been a push to bring the area back to life. new apartments and retail stores have opened up recently. but

today, a big step backwards. whole foods on eight and market that only opened a year ago abruptly closed down after announcing safety concerns . at more than 64,000 square feet, i was one of the biggest grocery stores in the area. it was buil as the whole foods flagship location in the city. superviso matt dorsey said he is shocked that this whole foods descende into chaos. >> it is heartbreaking to see i close, but i will tell you that it is not that surprising, and am really saddened about that. there are a lot of people who come into that store who are acting out, who are active in their drug addictions and who are robbing the store blind. there was a time when this stor opened that there were handcart that people would use to shop like any other supermarket. there were 250 of them. all of them were stolen.

try to squeeze the atmosphere, but we are talking about the five to 10% chance of a patchy drizzle as we had through the first part of the day tomorrow. even that chance goes down to 0 after lunch time. the winds wil pick up after the cold front moves through. that will happen during the morning. by mid day the winds will be more noticeable. the strongest guest will kick in as we head into tuesday afternoon. inland gusts in the 20 to 25-mile-per-hour range. along the coast, 30 to 4 miles per hour. not strong enough for a wind advisory but blustery. the wind will be out of the cooler direction, bringing temperatures back down to below what is normal for thi time of year. this is the live look outside from black mountai right now. we had city lights earlier, but now the fog has obscured those. the fog is goin to be present for at least the early hours tomorrow morning. a the cold front moves through, i will not only bring in cooler air and kick up the wins but

also scour the fog out of the inland valleys. we will see unobstructed visibility by 9:00 or 10:00 tomorrow morning. the rest of the day should bring us more sunshine but still cool temperatures. today the reading got at least a few degrees abov average. temperatures will drop down to the low to mid 50s tonight and back down to near o slightly below average for tomorrow's highs and back down to the 60s across most of the bay area. in the coast, mid-to-upper 50s. mid-60s on th peninsula. upper 60s in the santa clara valley. it won't feel that mild because of the stronger winds kicking in. the east bay, the warmer spots or further east, getting up to around 70 degrees. only near 60 in san francisco. low to mid 60 for oakland and the east bay. mid-to-upper 60s north of the golden gate until you go furthe north up into lake county. if you are heading out to the giants game tomorrow evening, hoping for a better result compared to this evening, temperatures will be in the lower half of the 50s at game time. you want to lower up appropriately if you want to watch the giants take on that team from down south. there are
