we begin with the louisville bank shooting that left five people dead. we're now seeing the heroic actions of the officers who confronted the gunman. a warning, some of the video may be hard to watch. police body camera footage was released yesterday showing officers approaching the bank. authorities said the gunman ambushed officers from the bank lobby before he was shot and killed. there's a makeshift memorial outside the bank, and there will be a prayer vigil today to remember the victims. jarred hill is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: we're learning a bit more about the timeline of that shooting in louisville. authorities are saying that it took officers just three minutes to get to the bank. the suspect had already killed people inside, but police say he waited in ambush which is when he shot at the officers who responded. >> 113, we're making entry -- >> reporter: police body cam video shows the moments louisville officers nickolas wilt and cory galloway rushed in to confront the gunman at old national bank on monday. wilt had only been on the job for two weeks. he was shot in the head by the

gunman and is now in critical condition. galloway was shot in the arm. cell phone video shows him taking cover before eventually shooting and killing the suspect. >> these officers unflinchingly answered the call to protect and their duty to serve. tragically lives were lost, but countless lives were saved. >> reporter: the suspect killed five of his co-workers in monday's attack. deana eckert, who died monday night, joshua barrick, thomas elliott, james tut, and 45-year-old juliana farmer. she had just moved to louisville aout three weeks ago to help raise her four grandkids. >> my mom was the sweetest person, lovingest person. a smile that lit up the room. >> reporter: a memorial is growing out the bank as people bring flowers and leave messages to honor the victims. >> it's something that hits a little closer to home because it's where you're from. >> reporter: louisville's interim police chief says the

ar-style gun used in the attack was purchased legally from a local dealership last week. craig greenberg, pushed for action to curb gun violence. >> this isn't about partisan politics. this is about life and death. >> reporter: louisville will hold a community-wide prayer vigil later today. talking about next steps here, without congressional action on gun control, this is all left up to the states. wendy, louisville's mayor wants to take that a step further. he's asking for kentucky law to be changed so that louisville can take some actions of its own on how to reduce the amount of guns in the city. he's also pushing for state law to be changed so guns used in crimes like this mass shooting can't be sold at auction. back to you. >> all right, jarred hill in new york. thanks. another republican could soon enter the race for the white house. south carolina senator tim scott will reportedly announce the creation of an exploratory committee today. in an email to supporters last night, he said he would be

making a, quote, major announcement. he'll be in iowa today and new hampshire tomorrow. both are early 2024 voting states. if scott enters the field, he'll face other notable republicans including former president donald trump, former south carolina governor nikki haley, and former arkansas governor asa hutchinson. former president trump gave his first tv interview since he was indicted on 34 felony charges. he talked with fox news' tucker carlson last night about a range of issues including his recent court appearance in new york city. he pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records in connection with a hush-money payment made to a porn star during the 2016 campaign. trump said he has no plans on dropping out of the 2024 race despite the investigations he's facing. >> is there anything they could throw at you legally that would covince you to drop out of the race? if you get convicted in this case, in new york -- >> no -- no, i'd never drop out

-- i wouldn't do it. >> trump is also under investigation for his handling of classified documents, alleged efforts to overturn election results in georgia, and a january 6th capitol riot. meantime republican representative jim jordan is being sued for his investigation into trump's prosecution in new york. the lawsuit filed by manhattan da alvin bragg accuses jordan of a campaign to intimidate and attack. bragg is asking a judge to invalidate any subpoena issued as part of the investigation. jordan, who's the chairman of the house judiciary committee, accused bragg of trying to block congressional oversight. u.s. defense officials could be getting closer to finding out who leaked classified intel on the ukraine war. there may be clues for investigators who are reviewing pictures of those records. catherine herridge explains. >> reporter: defense secretary austin acknowledged the leaked documents were exposed on the web potentially for weeks. >> where exactly and who had access at that point we don't know.

we simply don't know at this point. >> reporter: the probe being led by fbi investigators is making progress. austin drilled down on key dates. >> the documents that we are aware of are dated the 28th of february, 1st of march. i don't know if there are other documents that are -- have been on line before. >> reporter: as the investigation accelerates, two officials tell cbs news it does not appear to be a cyber leak but rather a physical theft of highly classified material. before the leak, sources say about 1,000 people or more potentially had access. it has since been scaled back. >> well, the fbi and pentagon investigators narrow the universe of suspects. >> it's actually easier the higher the level of classification -- >> reporter: robert anderson who worked counterintelligence and espionage at the fbi told cbs news highly classified material is also highly restricted, and that should help investigators.

>> you're going to start looking at who was it shared with, who had access. and particularly who couriered it and who brought it to and fro. >> reporter: the leaked records were apparently printed before being photographed and uploaded to a gaming platform. there are potential clues buried in the background like a hunting magazine ad or sports equipment. that could bring investigators even closer. meanwhile, the administration is dealing with diplomatic fallout. >> we have engaged with allies and partners at high levels over the past days, including to reassure them about our own commitment to safeguarding intelligence. >> reporter: two u.s. officials tell cbs news steps are being taken to reduce the risk. the number of people receiving classified briefs like the ones that leaked has shrunk significantly. catherine herridge, cbs news, the pentagon. the federal government may soon decide on historic water cuts for seven states that rely on the colorado river.

more than 40 million people in the west depend on the river for water and electricity. however, water levels are falling because of overuse and a long drought. and those seven states have not reached an agreement on how to protect the reservoirs. yesterday the biden administration released several proposals on cutting water usage in the west. officials are concerned water levels will continue to decline if no action is taken. there could be a federal decision on water cuts by august. president biden will speak today at a university in belfast, northern ireland. it's part of his four-day trip to mark the 25th anniversary of the good friday peace agreement that ended decades of deadly violence. he'll also head to the republic of ireland and visit areas where his ancestors were from. residents say they're looking forward to his arrival. >> he's a local person. he's coming home to -- as president of america, the most -- you know, great achievement for the area. >> mr. biden will also meet with

"the indianapolis star" reports evacuations were ordered for people living near a huge industrial fire. authorities say a tractor-trailer caught fire yesterday in richmond near the ohio border and spread to a building storing plastic and other recycled materials. residents within a half mile were ordered to leave. those outside the evacuation zone living downwind were told to keep their windows closed and pets inside. >> didn't hear anything. just indicated we saw a little smoke coming from right over there, just a little bit. within ten minutes it started to really spread. >> there were no reports of injuries. the "chicago tribune" says the city was selected to host next year's democratic national convention. president biden chose chicago over the other finalists, atlanta and new york. the convention will take place august 19th to 22nd at the united center. republicans will hold their convention a month earlier in milwaukee. chicago last hosted the

the cost of snail mail is going up again, and chipotle unveils its restaurant of the future. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks ended mixed tuesday, but investors will keep a close eye on march's consumer price index released later today. the dow gained 98, the nasdaq lost 52, and the s&p 500 was down by less than a point. "the new york times" says the epa will propose aggressive new limits on auto pollution today. the new rules would reportedly boost electric car sales tenfold and ensure green vehicles make up the majority of new cars sold in the u.s. by 2032. last year less than 6% of vehicles sold in this country were all electric. the proposed legislation would have to endure public comments, government review, and potential legal challenges before being enacted. get ready to pay more for stamps.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in eastern russia left a more than 300-mile area covered in thick gray dust. several villages were engulfed in soot with residents told to stay indoors. tuesday's eruption sent ash spewing 12 miles into the sky. scientists say it's the biggest fallout there a volcanic eruption in nearly 60 years. sometimes you just got to take matters into your own hands. arnold schwarzenegger terminated a pothole in his brentwood, california, neighborhood. the actor and former governor tweeted this video yesterday.
