early this morning when police showed up to arrest name memo many at his home. more on him i a minute. the arrest came nine days after lee was stabbed. lee had recently moved to miami but he was back in san francisco visiting friends. the video shows him stumbling and looking for help. a source close to the investigation said that lee and moe many were recorded leaving the millennium tower together the same night before the stabbing happened. it wasn't just that the suspect newly. according to police he also worked as an entrepreneur and traveled in similar circles. a source said that he did not kno momeni well, but that he knew his brother. we have more on we know that the suspect did >> it is described as a histori

building. neighbors were shocke to learn about a police presenc thursday morning, recording thi cell phone video, when police arrived to arrest nima momeni in the fatal stabbing of bob lee. pr executive sam singer never suspected he would be next-door neighbors with the ma accused in the criminal manner. this is momeni's front door eve with a package waiting for him out front. >> i am in shock. in the publi relations business we don't end up working next to killers. >> reporter: singer said that h never had a bad encounter with momeni. >> he was a very nice fellow, like any other technology consultant here in the bay area he lived in the heart of the emeryville technology district. he was very nice. he was very complementary of the renovation we did on our workspace here. h

said if you never need i.t. help, give me a call. >> reporter: momeni 's company is described as providing i.t. solutions in the bay area since 2010. by the looks of his apartment, singer says he neve would've suspected momeni of being involved in a criminal case. >> 30-foot ceiling. pool table. a lot of light. upscale stereo system and a lot of wiring and technology, like most people in the technology business have. >> reporter: steve johnson live across the street and describes himself as a guardian of the community, working to keep the street where the building is clean and safe. >> it is impossible that something like this could have happened. you are talking about somebody being arrested. it is really a shame. it is really unusual. >> reporter: momeni has had run-ins with the law in the

past. in 2004 he was charged with a misdemeanor for driving while intoxicated. in 2011 he pleaded no contest to selling a switchblade, landing him in jai for 10 days. singer, who is an expert in crisis communication, said his building is shocked to be connected to a criminal investigation. >> professionally it is not unusual. it certainly was unusual for everybody else in this building who are architects. they are filmmakers they are technology companies o artists. they don't have -- the cops show up at 5:00 a.m. and the news media show up shortly thereafter. >> as we mentioned, lee said th beth contributed rightly or wrongly to the debate over public safety in san francisco. some said that his death contributed to street violence. he said many people i know have been assaulted , and if

attackers are caught they are released immediately. is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders? then he tagged the san francisco public safety brooke jenkins. she said this today. >> reckless and irresponsible statements, like those in mr. musk's tweet serve to mislead the world and their perceptions of san francisco , and also negatively impact the pursuit o justice for victims of crime. >> a lot of people say that it is important to feel safe where you live. there are new numbers tonight on that very issue. a city survey just released shows that san francisco residents feel less safe here than in decades. the controller 's office say the people rate safety at 3.5 out of five. that is the lowest safety rating since 1996. shawn chitnis is back with us. i know that you

went to a public safety meeting to talk to people about this. from my experience i hear both. i hear people saying yes, i kno about the property crime here, but i feel safe walking around here. i also hear people saying that i feel so unsafe that it impacts my daily life. what did you find from people at this meeting? >> people are fighting the frustration while wanting to acknowledge the data. we did find one couple that said, we would have to change the most basic aspects of our life, like how we cross the street. so the want to actually do something, and that is why they joined thi group. >> reporter: ed and susan fish got involved with stop crime sf because they believe the city isn't working to keep them and their city safe. >> i think it depends where you live and where you spend your time. >> reporter: so they spent thei thursday night with a group tha is monitoring local courts and how cases are prosecuted in the system. >> our neighborhood is safe and we feel comfortable there, but there are parts of the city tha are not. >> reporter: this anybody ned t

bob lee. they were glad to hear the police believed it was not random act of crime. the couple said that the story line of sa francisco becoming a lawless city because of this one case was never fair. >> i am also tired of the headlines. this got a lot of publicity. there are many othe cases that don't get the same publicity that actually should. >> reporter: but that doesn't make them and many of the other in the community feel much better about where they live right now, even if violent crim is not trending up in san francisco. >> public perception is really important. you can give us facts all day long. if people don't feel safe walking down th street, if there is garbage everywhere, if they have to cross the street as we do because we want to get away fro the tents. >> reporter: this is why stop crime sf is focusing on how e

that it still impacts the livelihood of residents across the city. >> it seems like nothing of consequence is being done about it. >> reporter: volunteers service court reporters and attend as many cases as they can, taking notes and collecting data to pursue charges by prosecutors and decisions made by judges. they hope that their work can provide more transparency and help san francisco head in the right direction. >> i hope we can move on to the problems that people like us ar talking about. >> reporter: this group believe that better policing and toughe prosecution by the d.a. is only part of the puzzle to improve public safety. >> we have much bigger problems and we need to address it. we don't feel the courts are doing that. >> so she talked about the feeling and perception of being safe, but she also mentioned th data. i am curious. what does the data show? >> reporter: the data shows tha things are not actually that ba if you look at how many murders

to learn more. when you think about san francisco's iconic high-rises, what neighborhood are you picturing? is it the financial district? is it soma? a proposa for a new apartment building in sunset will change that. it will add 700 new apartments to the 2700 block right across fro the zoo. there is certainly nothing like it in the area. while it is just a proposal for now, it is already getting push back online and praise. a previous proposal failed not long ago for a 12 story buildin

at the same location. more than 1500 people signed a petition t stop it, but proponents say the city needs new housing, including affordable housing. the city is facing pressure to fulfill a state housing requirement, of adding 82,000 units by the year 2031. officials say they will not reach the benchmark by only planning for smaller housing projects. another san francisco grocery stores closing up shop for good. this time it is the safeway at 350 bay street, sitting at the north beach and fisherman's wharf. some say tha that will make things less convenient, but it could be tough for those in low income housing nearby. max darrow explains. >> reporter: with his regular safeway on the border of north beach and fisherman's wharf closing its doors for good, sheppard sanders' trips to the grocery store will soon look a lot different. >> now i have to spend money to go elsewhere to shop! >> reporter: he is used to bein able to walk to the store. >> it will be tough, because no i have to catch the bus to

market street or the embarcader to shop. >> reporter: sanders says that he shops at safeway because of the prices. >> now i have to spend an extra dollar or two to go somewhere else to shop. living here is really expensive but i love living here. >> reporter: the grocery store has been part of the community for decades. danny says the concern that sanders told us about our shared by many in the area. >> it is about 20,000 residents within a half-mile of this store. for these families and seniors, it will be more difficult to get affordable groceries all of a sudden. for residents in the neighborhood, particularly the units of low income housing across the street, it is a big problem. >> reporter: unlike some other store closures in san francisco safeway does not attribute this closer to crime concerns. a spokesperson tells us that the decision to close the store is not one we made lightly. we

continuously evaluate the performance of our stores, and occasionally it is necessary to close locations that are not meeting financial expectations. sauter says that the area surrounding the safeway has struggled in recent years with vacancies, and this will not help fix that situation. >> this will leave a big hole i the neighborhood. it will make it more difficult for all these other businesses that might hav relied on traffic for people going to or from safeway. it really has compounding effects. because this is such a big deal we are launching a petition. north beach neighbors is launching a petition to bring i another affordable grocery store. >> reporter: from the outside looking in, sanders says that a grocery store closing might not seem like a big deal. but for those living here -- >> it helps people like me shop and get my groceries, instead o going way out of the way to sho and so it does matter. >> reporter: a change in the

a d.a. released reports with redacted images of the texts. 14 officers were texting back and forth. in the texts, officers would do things like congratulate each other for hurting people during arrests, and they repeatedly used the n-word and used means of and gorillas to talk about city residents. some texts even targeted the mayor. mayor thorp called for the firing of all officers involved. antioch police chief released this statement on the investigation. i condemn the racially aborted content and incomprehensible behavior being attributed to members of antioch pd. i have taken action to ensure that a investigation by an independent investigator is conducted. in san jose, the mayor has different challenge, trying to tackle homelessness. the city i mp in some areas, but s
