... now at 11:00, police say they know who killed bob lee. but why? from kpix5, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i'm sara donchey. the big question for the past few days has really been what led an acquaintance to stab tech founder bob lee to death in a san francisco street. how are they connected? the two may have had a dispute over the suspect's sister. now, this is her. kazar momenni.
2:07 am
>> it appears from witness statements that mr. lee is somehow a friend of this woman. that is what the connection is. >> kazar showed up to court for her brother and she was there with her husband, plastic surgeon in san francisco. a key witness in the case thinks their marriage was in trouble but didn't know if lee and kazar ever had an intimate relationship. nima momeni's appearance was delayed. we learned more about what happened in the early hours of april 4th. a lot of this is based on an account from that unidentified witness and it starts here at an apartment on the 1500 block of mission street where lee, the witness, and kazar were having drinks around 3:30 p.m. then bob lee and the witness went to lee's
2:08 am
hotel where the witness overheard a call between lee and the suspect asking is his sister was doing drugs or anything inappropriate. the witness said lee had to reassure the defendant nothing inappropriate happened. the documents say lee showed onto kazar's home around 2:30 in the morning. her brother was also there. now at 2:03, surveillance footage shows nima and lee leaving in the suspect's bmw. the two got out of the carrened a talked on the sidewalk about five minutes. investigators think that is when momeni stabbed lee with a kitchen knife three times. once in the hip and twice in the chest. lee is shown looking for help as the defendant sped away in his bmw. he died in the hospital. >> mr. momeni left mr. lee there at the scene. we then as you know have all viewed a
2:09 am
video of mr. lee attempting to call 911, attempting to find help. and not being able to be successful with that. and so, to that extent, yes, he was left to die. >> the court documents highlighted one important text that was later found on lee's phone and it was from kazar. it read just wanted to make sure you were doing okay because i know nima came way way down hard on you. thank you for being such a classy man and handling it with class. love you. >> what it appears is there was some type of dispute between the two men. that mr. momeni was upset with mr. lee about something prior to leaving her residence and she was attempting to check on mr. lee the following morning. >> right now, momeni is charged with murder in the first degree which requires premedication versus second degree murder which is a crime of passion. >> that kitchen knife had to
2:10 am
get there somehow. and so, the moment someone accused of murder has also thought enough to grab a kitchen knife and bring that into play in a different location, that means they thought about stabbing this person. >> our betty yu went to rincon hill. >> reporter: when this first happened, neighbors were shaken by the news. they thought that bob lee was a victim of a random act of violence. the da said today now that we know the facts, bob's case is not indicative of the state of affairs on san francisco streets. dana bates and her daughter went for a grocery run. >> before we knew the details it was very disconcerting and scary. now that we know exactly what happened, it is definitely a different scenario and i don't feel any less safe than i
2:11 am
did before. in fact, i feel like san francisco's getting a bad rap that it shouldn't. >> reporter: the killing of bob lee initially sent shock waves through the city's east cut and rincon hill neighborhoods where this kind of violent crime is unusual. >> this was nothing to do with homeless or a dynamic that was conjured up initially. i find myself defending san francisco often because i think there is misconceptions. >> i feel safe with my family. because they are awesome parents. >> reporter: nora lives blocks from where the violent crime took place. she says she always feels safe walking in the area, even alone at night. but she became more vigilant in the days following the stabs. >> we need to be more careful with how we present san francisco in certain lights. while obviously, we want to inform the public about things that impact their safety, we also want to do it in a way to
2:12 am
ensure the public feels safe and knows the facts before we stoke any fires. >> reporter: dana and her family are committed to staying in san francisco. they recently bought a condo just blocks from the crime scene. >> we feel confident enough to come back to the city. we have to be in our offices. now more often. and, we love it here. we think it is a very safe and wonderful place. >> and dana also said when she first learned of the killings she had a hunch this was not a ran document act of violence. and turns out she was right. she did feel a general sense of peace once news of the arrest came out, but certainly, sara, the stabbing itself is horrific. >> i mean of course any time there is a loss of life there is a question of safety. but bob lee's family is devastated by this. we have posted the full charging documents on the case on our website. you can find them in the top story section of kpix.com. dozens of antioch police

on the need that they must do something, there is disagreement about what to do and how to achieve their goals. mayor london breed is touting a five year plan that looks to cut homeless rates in half the next couple of years. the so-called home by the bay plan will had a thousand new shelter beds and 3200 new housing units but some city supervisors say that focuses more on permanent housing than transitional help. >> we want to create goals that are very ambitious to get to a better place here in the city and county of san francisco regarding homelessness. >> the most important thing right now is ending encampments in san francisco. and having safe places for people to go. >> supervisor says creating permanent housing options for every homeless person is an unrealist goal and that transitional program should be the plan here. but part of the five year plan includes a new treatment facility for treasure island. it will add 70 transitional beds. residents will be able to say up to two
