from bus drivers to policeman. one applicant told us he's applying to the san francisco police academy after graduation because he wants to be part of the change. >> i'd like to think that one officer makes a dump, and hopefully i'll be that difference one day. >> $25 million have been approved to fund extra overtime in the meantime, and officer salaries are being increased. they're also matching recruitin bonuses. it will take at least five years to fully staff the san francisco police. crime is weighing on the minds of many san francisco leaders, both current and former. we spoke to mayor breed and former mayor brown on the killing of cash app executive bob lee, and the rumors that spread online about his death. >> i'll just say that the whole point, you know, i was making is, for people to not jump to conclusions. to not speculate.

dodson. his teen daughter calle 911, likely not realizing her dad was shot by officers themselves. the police chief says dodson pointed a gun at th officer before they fired. >> it starts with us not gettin off to a good start and making mistake and going to the wrong address, but it ends, honestly, with something you don't see very often with mr. dodson coming out with a gun and pointing it at officers. >> reporter: neighbors call it tragedy. >> it could have been any of us trying to do the exact same thing, trying to protect our family. >> reporter: the state police are now investigating. >> i'm extremely remorseful ove the whole event and extend nothing but deepest condolences to the dodson family. >> the police are not identifying the three officers. they're now on paid leave. washington post data shows that fatal police shootings reached record high last year, with mor than a thousand reported in the u.s. also last year, the gun

survivors of the horrific baton death march in world war ii were honored with a military color guard and 21 gun salute and a flyover today. but for many survivors it took decades to even talk about the absolute horror at the happens of the japanese. >> reporter: lewis was a young man of 21 when he was called to serve, fighting alongside u.s. troops in defense of his native philippines against the japanes in world war ii.

>> he was just an ordinary person put in an extraordinary circumstance. a lot of them were. >> reporter: out gunned and out manned, cecelia says her father's unit held out against the japanese for 99 grueling days. even after they surrendered and the battle was over, their fight for survival was just beginning. they were marched across the island to a prison camp. many died along th way from disease, hunger, and the cruelty of their captors. >> they were forced to march 65 plus miles away, and along the way, a lot of the soldiers died either by illness, beatings. >> reporter: but will you race survived and was eventually released. for years he raly spoke about what he endured, shielding his children from the

horrors of war. uger did her ow research on this chapter of history, that they had their first real conversation about the so called baton death march >> i ask him dad, did this really happen to you? why didn' you tell me about it? and he, well, basically broke down. >> reporter: that was 2011, and for the past 12 years, cecelia organized a commemoration of th death march to honor her father's heroism and preserve this bit of history for future generations. >> war continues to happen unti this day, and unless we defend our freedom, our democratic institutions, it will keep happening. >> her father died in 2014 at 9 years old. hikers and bikers in the south bay glad to be back on th

trails now that alum rock park has partially reopened. it's been closed for over three months due to extensive winter storm damage. the rest of the park will reopen in cruelear ll treemudslides, and other debris. no cars are allowed inside, so parking is limited. >> for the first batch of peopl coming through, they'll see a lot more things they usually wouldn't. wild flowers are blooming. everything is very green due to the rain. >> to find out which trails are open or closed, check out the alum rock park website. picnic tables are only available on a first come, first serve basis. speaking of t winter storms and heavy snows have brought snow melt into larry lake, once the largest fresh water lake west of the mississippi, it materialized again after being drained to a swamp by agriculture more than a century ago. this is what the swamp

looks like now. by the way, thi is at the southern end of the san joaquin valley north of bakersfield. more is on the way with record run off expected. crews are currently working to raise a levy to prevent future flooding, but that won't help farmers this year who say all their crops are now under water and we're expecting a littl bit more rain, but nothing major. >> nothing like that. maybe tha much on monday night. you'd really have to be in the north bay to see it. but i'll show yo what it looks like now to give an idea of how it will play out monday. we still have an entire half of the weekend to go first though. saturday night, san jos is 50 degrees right now. watch

for the fog to take over in the overnight hours. this is the classic marine fog. tomorrow morning, most of the bay is waking up to gray skies with th low cloud deck around into the early about, and then it breaks up and you get sunshine. concord, mid and upper 60s wher we'll top out. most locations i the same neighborhood, but if w put everybody on here, livermor you go to 63 and concord at 66. 66 in san jose, i should say 64 in san jose, 68 in santa rosa, and the neighbors go to the low 60s along the bay shore. that sunday looks pretty good. here' the system for monday sitting out here. we'll play it forward in futurecast and zoom in to watch a light line of showers trying to come into the north bay. a closer look. just watch, one of the models that goes out

far enough to look at monday, we'll see just a few light showers. i think a better way t look at this is watch it from the standpoint of the rain migh fall where you can measure it. santa rosa picked up about a tenth of an inch of rain the second half of monday. we don't see anything coloring it in south of there. okay. seven-day forecast. san francisco and oakland. the clouds show up on monday when that system comes through and that's it. we look through rest of the seven-day forecast, and there's a warm up by the time we get to friday an saturday. there's the top line for monday. look past that, though. look at friday and saturday. those are daytime highs in the mid-70s. we'll do the same thing. san jose mid-70s. inland east bay valley will be upper 70s by the time w get there, and the coast stays in the low to mid-50s the next few days. vern, out to you. coming up in sports. we jus
