f0 from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. now at 11:00, two mom and pop shops hit by burglars in the same night. how the crimes are starting to take a toll on the community. >> i used to feel like it was pretty safe, but now i pretty much drive places instead of just walking. >> all we're asking for is safer san francisco streets. >> but while everyone wants to make the city streets safer, it's the how that caused some clashes at a protest. >> sign right here, right here, and right here. and a tiny town in the south reeling after yet another mass shooting. this time at a teen's 16th birthday party. live from the cbs studios in san francisco, i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm andrea nakano. from high profile murders to break ins to open air drug markets, crime is top of mind for people

in san francisco. >> double trouble for two businesses on the same street in the sunset. burglars ripped them off in the same night. >> betty yu spoke to one owner who says it's a huge setback for the family-run restaurant. >> reporter: this is how janice found her family restaurant sunday morning. the front door was smashed. overnight, two thieves broke in. first, they went for the cash register that had some cash and coins. after scoping out the place, they took off with the buddha and jade statue meant to bring good luck and prosperity. >> i'm scared. >> reporter: janice said she's feeling sad. she's run this restaurant for more than ten years. this is the first break in they've experienced. on sunday, they were trying to

configure a newly purchased cash register. glass will cost $600 to replace. >> we want to get back the money. >> reporter: to replace the door? >> yeah. >> reporter: that same night, another mall business was hit in similar fashion just one block off the street on noriega. cafe bakery had just replaced its front glass door when we stopped by on sunday. >> i've been coming here for a long time. i used to go to cafe bakery a lot too. it's just really sad to see because, i don't know, i feel like this is kind of like a really big neighborhood place. a lot of people come here and only locals kind of know. >> reporter: customer megan wong has lived in the sunset almost her entire life. >> i used to feel it was pretty safe, but these days now, i drive places instead of just

walking. >> reporter: with the glass boarded up while janice waits eu >> somebody sees this and think we closed, but we're open. >> the supervisor also tweeted that murder and violent crimes are low in san francisco, but we should stay focused on other offenses, including property crime. a recent poll in the public institute of california found two-thirds of those in california worry about crime. in the bay area, that number drops to 58%, but that's still too high for most. in san francisco, dozens of residents protested in front of city hall today, demanding an end to drug dealing on the streets. the protest was met with a counterprotest. da lin was there to talk with residents, and during one of his interviews, an addict overdosed. >> reporter: a man overdosed lying on the street sunday

afternoon. >> there's an example. if the drugweren't available, this would not happen. somebody's overdosing. >> reporter: paramedics revived the man with narcan. he survived. it happened half a block away from richard perry's art studio. >> welcome to 7th and market street. we just witnessed a moment in time that always seems to be this way. >> reporter: the drug dealing and open consumption happen in front of richard's studio on a daily basis. while it's full of color inside the studio, he says there's a lot of darkness and misery outside. >> the reason i love painting is because it gives me an opportunity to express myself and add beauty to the world. >> reporter: he attended a protest outside city hall sunday to hear the solutions people have. >> took me to jail, and i got right. >> reporter: rich winn organized the protest. the former drug dealer and addict says his 2019 arrest helped clean him up. he now wants more police and to get rid of all

the supervised consumption sites. >> all we're asking for is safer san francisco streets for the children, for the elderly, for the every day person. >> reporter: but his mess 't well with a few co defund the police and use the money to help for addicts. >> safe safes, public housing, job opportunities. >> they're going to break into your car -- >> i'm not upset over that -- >> you should be! you should be! >> reporter: the 79-year-old artist says while different sides and politicians argue over solutions, street conditions get worse every day for him and his customers. >> it's very dangerous for them. they feel very intimidated and don't want to come in, and it's causing a lot of disruption. >> reporter: he didn't have a solution, but he's fed up and says this has to stop. >> the drug addicts and drug dealers should be off the streets. that's it. that's what i'd like to see. >> reporter: the city is hiring more police. city leaders say

that's one of the solutions, but they're asking for patience, saying it will take time for things to improve. >> sfpd is more than 500 officers short. they're increasing pay and offering signing bonuses to entice more recruits. a police chase in vallejo led to the arrest of two juveniles, one armed with a gun. police say they pulled the two boys over after they ran a red light and didn't have headlights on. but when the officer got out of the car, the driver sped off. police were able to stop the car with a spike strip. they had to chase down the suspects on foot. the driver was too young to even have a driver's license. officials in chicago say chaos broke out between hundreds of teenagers this weekend in the downtown area. 15 people were arrested, and at some point in the night, two teens were shot in the crowd. they're expected to recover. police say they don't know who fired the shots.

the small alabama town of dadeville is in mourning tonight after a mass shooting left four dead and dozens injured. hundreds gathered for a vigil, including at least one of the survivors. a teen girl who was shot three times in the arm. >> i don't know what was going on. i just saw blood coming down my arm. i was in shock. >> here's what we do know. officials say the shooting happened at a dance studio that was hosting a sweet 16 birthday party.. four people killed, 28 others injured. some are still in critical condition. police haven't released any information about the suspect or motive. one of those killed was the birthday girl's brother who was about to graduate high school. one of his friends was at the vigil tonight and talked about the moment the shots rang out. >> like at the moment, he was fixing to turn around and tell me something and then they

started shooting. i think he went right into it. i wish i could have pulled him out. >> this weekend also saw deadly gun violence at a crowded park in louisville, kentucky where two men were killed and four others wounded. it follows monday's mass shooting at a downtown bank that left five people dead. in connection with all of this, a new cbs news poll reveals 3 in 4 americans say mass shootings are preventable. nearly a quarter say mass shootings are something we have to accept as part of a free society. that same cbs news poll found that 62% want to ban the ar-15 semiautomatic rifle, and that includes about 40% of gun owners. still to come on cbs news bay area, demonstrators hold rallies across the country in support of access to an abortion pill. what the supreme court is weighing this week. and if you're thinking about going solar, well, you missed your chance to get the bigger state rebate. the ripple

the battle over access to the abortion pill making its way to the supreme court just as samuel alito's temporary hold preserving access to the pill ends on wednesday night. this comes as the justices review the lower court's ruling and whether to step in. at skyler henry shows us, activists across the country aren't waiting to make their voices heard. >> when you attack the rights of americans, you're attacking america. >> reporter: this weekend, vice president kamala harris made a surprise appearance at an abortion rights rally in los angeles. one of several demonstrations across the country, concerned the court social security courts are turning back the clock on health care. justices are considering whether to intervene in the court battle over the drug after a trump

appointed federal appeals court judge in texas ruled to block access earlier this month. >> if we're going to use the federal courts as a way to bar and ban access, we are looking at a national abortion ban and more. i think states have to band together to do as much as they can in opposition to that. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll out today shows nearly 70% of all americans want to see mifepristone remain available in states where abortion is legal. that includes almost half of republicans. >> i have a greet pro-life voting record, but some stances we've taken, especially when it comes to rape, incest, and protecting the life of the mother, those right of center, left of center, they can't support us. >> reporter: the temporary hold remains until wednesday night. justice alito gave anti-abortion medical associations and physicians

that brought the challenge of the fda drug until wednesday to respond. the state is stockpiling 2 million abortion bills to uphold california's position as an abortion safe hey. >> the state put a halt to financial incentives for homeowners going solar. as of yesterday, solar customers can no longer lock in the higher rates power companies pay them for excess energy generated by panels. that compensation payment is what encouraged millions in california to go solar. now, with that incentive gone, those in the solar industry worry their business will soon go off a cliff. the solar workers are busy installing panels and batteries, but with the new regulations, that could all change. >> having been an entrepreneur now for over 20 years, that's the thing that keeps you up most at night. do i have to lay somebody off? there's a lot of anxiety around making sure 60

people have a job the next day. >> it's much less cost effective for the homeowner, so that's why we're doing the project now. >> the state utilities commission says the old compensation plan is outdated and needs to be replaced with a new pricing system. spring is in full swing in the bay area, and our photographer captured a sea of yellow flowers at san jose's shady oak park. the parks and rec department inviting everyone to enjoy the blooms throughout the season. we got a little cold patch coming up, but we have some awesome weather coming up next weekend. >> we'll be near 80 for some of the warmer inland spots. but before we get to that, a little rain for tomorrow, and then the next few days kind of cool and breezy. we have to wait a little before the warm up. first things first, the marine layer starting to fill in much of the bay. that's the view from downtown san jose. there's a persistent patch of low clouds developing here and over

the east side of the bay and tri-valley the last few mornings. it's starting now. it will overtake a good part of the bay overnight. low to mid-50s for most of us right now. you can see the clouds right now, building in for much of the east bay. they'll overtake pretty much the entire bay. monday morning is relatively great, just like today. then the higher clouds move in by the afternoon. there will be some sunshine tomorrow, but there's going to be more clouds, certainly in the morning and through the early afternoon. it will keep the temperatures warmer for the morning lows. we're only going down to the mid-40s for most of us. daytime highs tomorrow are still relatively cool. just as breezy as today. below average by 7 or 8 degrees. see the e cu that's coming our way. we'll play that forward in the futurecast and watch that line of showers. we're just on the southern edge of it. we're coming in for a closer look and

pull out more detail. how is it looking now that we're 24 hours from this chance. see the clouds for tomorrow? but by tomorrow night, there's the line of rain in the north bay. that's in the 9:00 hour or so. i doubt the showers will hold together south of the golden gate. but a few more come through into tuesday morning. maybe even into tuesday afternoon, a few more move across the bay area. but it's virtually nothing. it might look good on the futurecast as you play it through, but it's barely anything. there's the 20 miles per hour breeze, lies down tuesday morning, and then picks up again tuesday afternoon. lies down wednesday morning, picks up wednesday afternoon. for the next few days, it will continue to feel cool off that. but we really

turn a corner by the time we get to thursday and friday. look at oakland. you're going from the upper 50s tomorrow to the low 70s by friday and saturday. looking at the north bay valleys, you have a chance of a drop of rain for monday and tuesday. but you're in the upper 70s by saturday and sunday. and the inland east bay valleys will be at 80 by the time we get to saturday. the first time we do that should we get there. back to you. bay area rapper e40 kicked out of his court side seat at the warriors and kings game. why sacramento security says they told him to go. and it's not the nba finals, but the city of oakland held a parade for some other local basketball champs. straight ahead on game day, the warriors are behind in the season, but no reason to fret. golden state thrives in bounce back games. >> i'm not even going to expound on that. >> injuries today in the nba could bring forth some issues

welcome back. the sacramento kings say they're looking into whether racial bias was behind e40 getting ejected from last night's playoff against the warriors. >> the rapper typically watches the dubs from court side seats at chase center and had traveled to sacramento, but he was escorted out of the arena after a heated confrontation with fans. they claimed he was standing and blocking their view. he was asked to sit down, but witnesses say e40 refused. that's when security guards took him away. the rapper, though, says he spoke to a heckler in an assertive, but polite manner. he claims he was kicked out due to racial bias. gary payton ii says he didn't see what happened. >> it's a little weird. it's the playoff atmosphere. the fans will be fans. i really didn't expect it, but, you know, you never know.

>> the sacramento kings responded to the controversy saying we take the claims seriously and are investigating the facts and circumstances regarding the situation, as we do any time an accusation like this is made. game two of the first round series is tomorrow in sacramento. they come back to chase center thursday for a game. oakland is no longer home to the warriors, but there's another basketball dynasty, and they once again made oakland a city of champions. last month, the oakland tech high school girl's basketball team captured its third straight state championship. fifth in the school's history. and the oakland high boy's team won their first division 3 championship. >> i think, especially with like the teams leaving, you know, the warriors leaving, i think the city really needs something to rally around. we've been very important to be >>the oakland tech girls just

a lot of talented lego builders in san francisco today for the annual lego competition festival. there is such a thing. young artists and builders showed up to showcase their best work. there were exhibits, play areas, performances, and even a job fair. 3d printers are being used to build everything from rocket launchers to replicas of cardiac patients' hearts. >> kenny choi introduces us to a north bay teen who's taking his 3d printing skills to another level. one that could save lives. >> reporter: high school sophomore ryan conkel is getting closer to building one of the fastest 3d printers in the world. it's a hobby he picked up a couple of years ago. >> you're thinking of ideas like how can i make this better? >> reporter: the 16-year-old shows a growing collection of machinery in his attic.

big crowds turned out today for the annual cherry blossom festival and parade in san francisco. it celebrates japanese culture, and aside from the parade and a chance to wave at the cherry blossom queen, andrea, you know her, don't you? >> yeah, i was there for the pageant and was emceeing the event. >> you could have waved to her if you liked. people were able to savor all kinds of japanese food and watch demonstrations. the festival dates all the way back to 1968 which was not all
