with y mathon.n.y'on nearly 30,000 athletes from more than 100 countries are expected to take part. it's been ten years since the terrorist bombing killed t ore 0 others at the race. on saturday a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the two locations where the bombs went off to remember and pay tribute to the victims. jarred hill is in boston. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ten years ago, this has really shaped the city in so many ways. it's where we got the phrase "boston strong," a sign and mantra of the resilience to push through tragedy. it's also going to help push tens of thousands of runners through this iconic course as the city honors the lives that were lost. today nearly 30,000 runners including some of the world's top athletes will head for this

hallowed finish line of the 127th boston marathon. it comes ten years after the trgic bombing that killed three people.krcampbe 23-year-old lingzi lu, and 8-year-old martin richard lost their lives. hundreds more were injured. >> i was catapulted through the open doors of the restaurant. >> reporter: that includes heather abbott. she lost most of her leg that day. heather eventually relearned to walk and even returned to run part of the marathon. >> i made an effort to not focus on what i can't change. cnge is happened the day of the boston marathon bombing. [ bell ] >> reporter: over the weekend the city held remembrance ceremonies. the families of the victims were here as wreaths were laid at the site where two pressure cooker bombs went off. >> we'll take care of each other. throughout the day there have been acts of kindness and service. >> reporter: local fbi officials

say they're not aware of credible threats to the race, but there are multiple security teams here including uniformed and undercover police as well as the national guard. a dronsurveillance unit will also monitor today's marathon from above. of the tens of thousands people running this marathon here today, none of them will have bib number 2013. that was not assigned in honor of this remembrance. back to you. >> thank you so much. breaking overnight, the u.s. military says that it conducted a helicopter raid in syria targeting a senior isis leader. u.s. central command says the raid resulted in the probable death of the isis leader who was responsible for planning terror attacks in the middle east and in europe. the identity of the person was not immediately available. officials say two other armed individual were also killed, and they also say no u.s. forces or civilians were killed or wounded.

president biden is calling it outrageous and unacceptable after two mass shootings over the weekend. in a statement about gun violence, he said, quote, guns are the leading killer of children in america, and the numbers are rising, not declining. both shootings happened saturday night. four people died and 28 others were wounded at a birthday party in alabama. and a shooting left two dead and four injured at a park in louisville, kentucky. cristian benevides has more. >> reporter: dadeville, alabama, a community in morning after gun violence broke out at a 16th birthday party. residents and some survivors gathered for a vigil sunday night. witnesses say teenagers are among the dead and injured. >> got shot right here, right here, and right here. >> reporter: investigators are collecting evidence at the mahogany masterpiece dance studio where the party was held saturday night. >> we're going through in a very methodical way.

we're going to do exactly what we need to do to ensure justice is brought to bear for those families. >> reporter: antojuan woody says he knows two of the victims including his best friend. >> we loved each other, and i hate that it happened like that. >> reporter: authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information about the shooting. >> i cannot stress this enough -- no matter how minor you think it is, we absolutely need you to share it. >> reporter: the mayor of the city northeast of montgomery with a population of about 3,200 says the tragedy came as a shock. >> we've never had anything like this happen here in the whole -- in my whole 73 years. >> reporter: this weekend also saw deadly gun violence at a crowded park in louisville, kentucky, where two men were killed and four other people wounded. it follows monday's mass shooting at a downtown bank. >> five days later we're at another scene of a reckless act of gun violence. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll

shows roughly three in four americans believe mass shootings are preventable, and just over 60% say they want the ar-15 semiautomatic rifle banned. cristian benevides, cbs news. well, the start of dominion voting system's $1.6 billion defamation trial against fox news is being pushed back to tomorrow. it was set to begin today. last night the delaware judge overseeing the trial delayed the start. he did not cite a reason. dominion claims fox news knowingly spread false information that the company rigged the 2020 presidential election to prevent donald trump's re-election. the abortion pill mifepristone remains available at least for now, but a key decision awaits the supreme court this week. on friday, justice samuel alito preserved access to the drug until at least wednesday to give the court time to decide whether to intervene in two conflicting lower court -- federal court rulings. >> if we're going to use the federal courts as a way to bar and ban access, we are looking

minister fumio kishida had to be evacuated after someone threw an apparent smoke bomb at an event in western japan. there's no injuries, and the suspect was arrested. it came nine months after former japanese prime minister shinzo abe was assassinated. spacex could launch the most powerful rocket ever built on a test flight today. on friday, the faa gave the go ahead for the launch of the nearly 400-foot starship rocket from a site in texas. spacex will attempt to send the uncrewed spaceraft on a 1.5-hour flight around the world before it falls back to earth and splashes down in the ocean. the rocket is supposed to eventually carry people to the moon, mars, and beyond. coming up, caught on camera. a man on his porch in north carolina has a surprise, wild encounter. and later, "love is blind" reunion glitch. why fans of the netflix reality show were left hanging for a little while. this is the "cbs morning news."

more than 100 ukrainian prisoners of war are back home after a huge prisoner exchange with russia. officials in ukraine announced the exchange yesterday during the observance of orthodox easter. 130 op includinso, ilors, os pty russ n there's no word on how many russian prisoners were released. a bear in encounter was caught on camera in north carolina, and residents near a plastics fire are being allowed to return home. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a days' long evacuation order was lifted near the site of a toxic fire at a former plastics recycling storage facility in indiana. authorities say the order for people living within a half mile of the fire was lifted yesterday after consulting with state, federal, and local health officials. they say it came after it was determined that the air and other environmental concerns

were safe. the cause of the fire, which started last tuesday, remains under investigation. "the seattle times" says passengers retrieved their cars from a washington state ferry that ran aground. the walla walla ran aground off bainbridge island on its way to seattle. there were nearly 600 passengers, 15 crew members, and 175 vehicles on board. no one was hurt. >> basically we felt the boat lose power and slowly start to lose speed. then the siren went off, and the captain said "brace for impact." in about 30 seconds we crashed into bainbridge island. >> passengers were transferred off the grounded ferry, but their vehicles remained on board overnight. tugboats were able to tow the ferry back to shore yesterday. officials say there appeared to be an issue with the ferry's generator. and "usa today" says a north carolina man was relaxing outside his home when he came face to face with a bear. security video shows the man on
