a sweet 16 birthday party. four people were killed including the brother of the teenager whose birthday they were celebrating. 13 others were hurt. it happened in the small town of dadeville. jarred hill has more. >> reporter: strong leads are good but it doesn't change what happened. at a sweet 16 birthday, the girl who was celebrating her birthday told her mother somebody at the party had a done. she turned on the light and said anyone 18 and older with a gun, please leave. this is a picture of phil and a alexis dowdell when things were better. phil's last act was her protector, saving her as gunfire

erupted at her sweet 16 last saturday night at a dance studio in dadeville, alabama. he died in her arms. >> he was going in and out, and then when somebody from the ambulance came in and they felt his pulse, they said he was gone. >> reporter: the 18-year-old high school senior had committed to play football at jacksonville university in the fall. phil and alex sis mom were chaperoning the party. she got shot but will be fine. she said she will not find peace until that person is caught. >> i don't know why someone would come to my daughter's sweet 16 and bring a gun and shoot innocent kids. >> reporter: four people were killed in addition to phil. 17 shaun keeva smith and two others. yesterday state lawmakers spoke about a preplanned event to push for gun violence legislation >> i am tired of hearing the

wails and the cries of parents and families who have lost their loved ones and elected officials have not acted. >> reporter: investigators say they're conducting interviews and that shell casings used in handguns have been recovered from the scene. they're asking anyone with any information to come forward anne-marie, so far no word on suspects or motives. this just does not get easier. bck to you. >> jarred hill in new york. jarred, thank you very much. well, president biden has spoke within the family of a black teenager who was shot after showing up at the wrong house. a family spokesperson said mr. biden offered prayers and justice for 16-year-old ralph yarl. the teen's family says he went to pick up his brothers last week but mixed up addresses. he was shot in the head and arm and is now recovering at home. andrew lester, an 84-year-old white man, faces two felony

charges. as roxana saberi reports, authorities say there was a racial component to the case. >> do you think if he was a white 16-year-old boy and rang that door, do you think it would have been the same outcome? >> reporter: ralph yarl's family says ralph was gunned down after he rang the doorbell. he rang the wrong doorbell. the yarl family's attorney says he waited a few minutes efore wringing the bell and the door opened. >> he was immediately confronted with an armed man who said he did not want to see him on his property again and then he opened fire. >> reporter: still the teen's aunt says the teen ran for help, knocking on three more doors before a neighbor called 911. >> as his aunt, what do you think about that?

>> hearing that part of the story is even harder. he was clearly hurt. he was clearly bleeding. he was clearly needing help. >> reporter: ralph is now recovring at home. the clay county prosecutor announced two felony charges against andrew lester. >> a warrant was issued for mr. lester's arrest. i can tell you there was a racial component to the case. >> reporter: kansas city's mayor agreed. >> something like this happening is unimaginable and unbelievable, and it's hard to expect something like this wouldn't have happened if ralph weren't black. >> reporter: it sparked a protest on sunday. >> we want justice. ralph is a good kid. he doesn't deserve what's happening to him. >> according to the probable cause statement lester told police he thought someone was breaking into his house. he faces up to life in prison if convicted. in new york now, new york state, a 0-year-old woman was shot and killed when the car she was riding in went to the wrong address.

authorities say caylin gillis was in a car looking for a friend's house in hebron. officials say after they pulled into the wrong driveway, a 65-year-old homeowner fired two shots. he's been charged with second-degree murder. breaking overnight moscow says vladimir putin visited russian-held territories today. the kremlin released video of putin visiting the command post in the southern kherson region. there was also video of him at the russian headquarters and the national guard. moscow annexed the two areas last september. and "the wall street journal" reporter arrested on espionage charges is due in court today to appeal his detention. 31-year-old evan gershkovich was taken into custod more than two weeks ago. yesterday the u.s.mase remains r

"the wall street journal" and the u.s. government deny the allegations of spying. an ohio grand jury voted to not indict eight akron police officers in the shooting death of jayland walker. officers fired 29 shot at the black man during a chase after a traffic stop. he was shot 46 times after he jumped out of a moving car and ran. he said walker fired at least one round at officers. >> the law allows officers to use deadly force to defend themselves or others against a deadly threat. >> and for any state official to stand up there and justify what was done to jayland, shame on you. >> the attorney general said walker ignored commands to stop and show his hands and reached toward his waistband and raised his hand as officers chased him. he said police did not know

walker had left his gun in the car. the defamation trial between dominion voting systems and fox news is set to begin today. a delaware judge delayed yesterday's scheduled opening but did not cite a reason. dominion claims fox news knowingly spread false information that the company rigged the 2020 election. two u.s. citizens are under arrest for allegedly helping set up a secret police station in new york city on behalf of the chinese government. the justice department says officers from china's ministry of public security operated illegally in an office building in the chinatown neighborhood before closing last year. the two men have been charged with conspiracy to act as agents of the chinese government. >> this task force isn't a normal police force. it doesn't protect people or combat crimes. it commits crimes, targeting
