blockbuster settlement between fox news and dominion voting systems. yesterday the conservative network agreed to pay more than $787 million to avoid a high-profile defamation trial. it was sued d after airing unfounded claims that dominion helped rig the 2020 presidential election against then-president donald trump. fox news said it's pleased to settle the dispute, but the legal fighting is not over yet. jarred hill is here in new york with more as all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. and another voting machine company has an even bigger defamation case in the works against fox news. as you mentioned, the media giant has now avoided the trial against dominion, though that voting machine company says this is bigger than the massive payout they're about to get. >> truthful reporting in the media is essential to our democracy. >> reporter: the ceo of dominion voting systems says the nearly $800 million settlement of its defamation suit against fox news is historic. >> today's settlement of

$787.5 million represents vindication and accountability. lies have consequences. >> reporter: opening arguments were set to begin in a delaware court, but instead the judge announced the parties had resolved the case. dominion originally sought $1.6 billion, arguing that fox news knew the claims made by their guests and some hosts that dominion helped rig the 2020 presidential election were false but aired them anyway, damaging the company. >> there were a lot of serious issues surrounding the state's dominion voting machines. >> reporter: court records in the lead up to the settlement included internal communications showng that fox hosts and executives doubted claims of election fraud. in a statement the network acknowledged that the court found some of fox's claims against dominion to be false. >> the settlement then avoids a

do appears to be over, theneing similar defamation suit from smart-matic. another voting system firm. they're seeking $2.7 billion. and experts believe that case could end in a settlement, as well. now after the dominion settlement was announced, smart-matic said, quote, it remains committed to clearing the name, recouping the significant damage done to the company, and holding fox accountable. anne-marie, back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. police in maine have arrested a man accused of shooting and killing four people in a home. want bodies were discovered in the small town of bowdoin. authorities charged 34-year-old with murder. no word on a possible motive. investigators say three more people were shot in their cars on a busy highway about 25 miles away. one victim was critically wounded. police say the shootings are connected, but they have not released any more information.

the supreme court is set to make a major decision today regarding a widely used abortion decide by midnight on whether or not to keep full access to mifepristone. last week a court of appeals ruled the drug can stay on the market but with significant restrictions. availability was almost taken away entirely when a texas judge suspended the fda's approval of mifepristone, but the justice department appealed the ruling. the 84-year-old white kansas city man accused of shooting a black teenager will be arraigned in court today. andre lester posted bond yesterday and was released from jail. he's charged with two felony counts after last thursday's shooting. authorities say he shot 16-year-old ralph yarl twice after the teen accidentally went to the wrong home to pick up his brothers. lester told police he lives alone and thought someone was trying to break in. adriana diaz has more. classmates marched in solidarity and support. ralph's mother says her son is recovering from being shot in the head and arm. >> mostly he just sits there and stares and the buckets of tears rolls down his eyes. you can see that he's just replaying the situation over and criminal action and first-degree assault. according to the criminal complaint, the 84-year-old told police he had just laid down in bed when he heard the doorbell. he picked up his gun and said he saw a black male approximately six-feet tall at the door. telling detectives he was, quote, scared to death due to the male's size and lester's old age. the complaint says lester repeatedly expressed concern for the victim. ralph's family says as he was trying to get help, someone yelled at him to get on his knees and raise his hands. >> all we hear is a bunch of banging at our door.

others were injured after a parking garage collapsed in new york city. police say the concrete floors fell on top of each other yesterday a few blocks away from city hall. authorities believe everyone was accounted for inside the building, but they were still conducting searches last night to make sure no one s usdeealee escribed they w an. >> so then all the sudden the building was starting to shake tremendously, and the noise also was quite loud. and then i called out for my son who was in the back. and we both decided -- obviously we had to get out. >> we thought initially it was an earthquake. but then when we saw the cars basically we thought it was a sinkhole. >> city records show the three-story structure has been a garage at least since the 1920s. senate democrats failed to temporarily replace senator dianne feinstein on the powerful the 89-year-old has been out since february while recovering from a case of shingles.

a toddler caused a brief security scare at the white house, and damar hamlin announced his nfl comeback. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the buffalo news" reports the bills' safety, damar hamlin, has been cleared to play football again. the 25-year-old spoke yesterday announcing his return to the nfl. he suffered cardiac arrest four months ago during a game and had to be resuscitated on the field. >> this event was life changing, but it's not the end of my story. my heart is still in it, you know. my heart is still in the game. i love the game. it's something i want to prove to myself, not nobody else. >> hamlin was cleared after meeting with a third and final specialist last friday. since his recovery, he's been taking part in voluntary workouts. "people" magazine reports a body in a hearse apparently saved the life of a driver who almost went off a cliff. new video was just released of the incident which happened back

first it was historic flooding, now people in south florida are dealing with gas shortages. drivers have been finding long lines or empty pumps since last week's torrential rainfall. experts say it's a distribution problem since the high water slowed the delivery of fuel from port everglades. still frustrated. >> reporter: you're on e right now, and you're in line. and you're hoping they still have gas by the time you get there. >> hoping to have it or hoping that i don't have to push in the last 10, 20 feet there. >> it's kind of violent. like you hear -- so hopefully we can get in and get out with no problem. >> the florida divisions of emergency management is sending 500,000 gallons of fuel to southeast florida to help with the shortages. some big announcements from

netflix. the streaming service said that it's getting ready to launch a crackdown on password sharing. it's expected to happen by jun. the company is looking to increase revenue as it faces growing competition from sites like disney plus, hulu, peacock, and paramount plus. in a separate announcement, netflix is shutting down its dvd-by-mail service. the final disks in the red and white envelopes will be mailed out in late september. the service started roughly 25 years ago. there could be a new round of layoffs at facebook's parent company today, and someone paid big bucks for the first-ever electric corvette. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: no major moves on the stock market tuesday as investors studied the latest round of earnings from america's big banks. the dow lost ten points, nasdaq was down by four, and the s&p 500 gained three points. facebook's parent company meta is now announcing another round of layoffs.

"the washington post" reports this time engineers and other tech workers who build products are on the chopping block. impacted employees will reportedly begin to be notified today. los angeles teachers have now reached a tentative deal with the school district avoiding the threat of a second walkout this year. the 35,000 teachers have been without a contract for ten months. they will now see their pay increase by more than 21% over three years. this agreement comes after teachers picketed with support staff in march. and one of the world's largest private car collectors has added to his fleet. 73-year-old rick hendrick paid $1.1 million for the first electric 2024 corvette e-ray. he called it a piece of history. the e-ray will go on sale to the public later this year. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this wednesday morning. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. and how many bones would you pay for this dinosaur?

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ a troubling new study was released on vaping in the u.s. the american cancer society says more younger adults are using e-cigarettes. almost three quarters of a million more people ages 18 to 29 vaped between 2019 and 2021. >> they have impacts on our lung airways, they have cardiovascular risks because of the nicotine in them. the variety of flavors that are included in e-cigarettes and importantly we don't know the long-term impacts of using these products. >> the study also found that more than 2.5 million young adults who used e-cigarettes in 2021 had never smoked
