>> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello good evening. i am sar donchey. it is not everyday you see dignitaries walking around the streets of the tenderloin, but if you ask people living there who are begging for help, maybe we need more of that. today during an unannounced tri to the city, governor newsom di just that. the tenderloin has been ground zero for fentanyl and drug use and drug dealing in san francisco. homelessness and trash piling up on the streets have also been common complaints. wilson walker has spent a lot of time reporting here. mayor breed declared a state of emergency in the tenderloin in early 2022, and today the governor showed up to get a look for himself. andrea nakano spoke to some tenderloin residents who are trying to get his attention for the sake of the neighborhood. >> reporter: jj smith is on the streets every day talking to those who are homeless and addicted to drugs. today he had

a chance to meet with governor newsom and asked him a question he just didn't get the answer h was hoping for. >> hey gavin, tell me what you are going to do about the fentanyl epidemic! >> reporter: that is jj smith shouting up the question as governor gavin newsom walked th streets of the tenderloin. he said the governor told him he i working on the issue now. >> i feel as though he is responsible, and that there wasn't no answer to my question if you came out here to see about it and to work on it, you would speak to the people who actually see what's going on. >> reporter: smith documents th hard realities of the fentanyl crisis, but he also shares stories of hope. attics that have taken the steps to get help. >> the first step of speaking t them and trying to become their friend. once you become their friend and they trust you, then you can start offering them the things they need, like getting treatment, going to rehab. it i just that you have to build a relationship to them. in order

to build a relationship with them, you have to speak with them. >> reporter: businesses welcome any effort to solve the crisis on the streets. >> i think everybody sees on tv but to actually feel it is a little bit different. >> reporter: the owner says tha business has slightly improved of late but knows that more can be done to bring customers into his store. he hopes that the governor will have more concret solutions after his visit. >> i think that if you see the ground reality, yeah, it helps to see what it is like to live and walk around here. i think that helps. it is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: the governor's office says the state has spent more than $1 billion to tackle the fentanyl and opioid crisis, but jj smith wonders where that money is going. >> i told gavin lux, man. peopl are on the streets and there is so much suffering. they are dying. some are also losing their mind and parts of their body. in some way we have to

come together and give in and see what is a better solution that is going to fix this problem that has been created. >> reporter: the governor has pledged to spend nearly $100 million more to fight fentanyl, with a focus on getting narcan into communities to combat overdoses. smith feels that it is another measure that is not getting to the root of the problem. >> as andrea mentioned, the governor has pledged nearly $97 million from his upcoming budge to fight opioid and other drug overdoses. he plans on doing that through the state nonprofi prescription drug initiative called cal rx, using them to distribute more drugs that woul reverse an overdose, including distribute them in middle and high schools in california. the drug no oxygen, known as its brand name narcan, the supreme court has delayed whether to uphold a ruling from an fda judge against mifepristone.

california is making moves to protect access for people. governor newsom says california will allow the use of the drug even if the supreme court suspends fda approval. the state has also secured a stockpile of up to 2 million pills of an alternative drug. looking ahead a little bit, thursdays are a day to celebrate. we are that much closer to the weekend. usually traffic lightens up towards the end of the week. not tomorrow! traffic in the city could be especially bad, and it has to d with having too much to do. so let's go ahead and call it the traffic trifecta. there are three major events happening almost all at once in san francisco. so tomorrow may be a good day to consider public transit if you are coming into the city or just getting around town. the dubs are back at home at chase for game three against the kings. you know that is going to be busy. plus the free watch party outside of thrive

rtng e webut an earthquake! >> let me show you where was felt. you had to be in the east bay. i will get out of the way so that we can read this. it wa four miles south of antioch. 3.7, strong enough to be felt here. you can see the areas tha are shaded in light blue. these are places that reported that they did feel shaking. there ar no reports of damage from this. if you look at the bay area, it wasn't felt all that widely if you were on the other side of the hill. some people on the peninsula said they felt it. i you felt it, that's what it was but there were smaller quakes that happened as well around th same time in the vicinity, whic is normal. this happened on the greenville fault or just off of the greenville fault. the last time that did anything significant, you have to go bac to 1980. there was a 5.8

earthquake in 1980. people thin of it as the livermore earthquake. so it is capable of more, but tonight's was fairly light and thankfully no reports of damage on it. we have a warm-up coming our way. we take a look outside and san jose where it is 58 degrees. we will take the numbers for tomorrow and do the comparison for how much warmer we will be not only tomorrow because these numbers for thursday are about six to seven degrees warmer than today for many places. we had been at average much for april. so it i low 70s inland, mid-to-upper 60 in the bay. friday is the day when we get warmer. we watched the colors change. that's friday. now it is low 80s! friday will be a noticeably war day. saturday will be almost as warm, then we start a little bi of a cooling trend after that. you will see how deep into it w get on friday. of course if you are in the city and along the

coast, you are not shaded in an colors on here because you are not above or below average. 70 degrees in the city is relatively warm, but 68 would b the average daytime high for friday's date. when we look at the wind it does get breezy enough for the onshore winds. that is why the temperatures ar staying average if you are righ near the water, whether it is coastal bay. everybody else get a big warm-up. so san francisc in oakland the first. here is your seven-day forecast. oakland, you go to the low 70s, then you don't cool down a lot from there. maybe if you degrees. same thing for the north bay valleys. you go to 80 for friday, then you cool down little bit, but you are staying above average the whole time. san jose, same story. the warmest in the valleys, low 80 friday and saturday through the upper 70s as we get towards early next week. so it is about to get warm and stay warm for a while! >> i love this. that's nice. thank you so much, darren. coming up, we will head over to the san francisco museu
