the actor was holding a gun when it went off killing the cinematographer and wounding the director in 2021. yesterday on the day production for the movie resumed, prosecutors said they want to look at new facts in the case. bradley blackburn is in new york to explain all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. another turn of events in this strange story. alec baldwin has said from the beginning that he did not pull the trigger of the gun when it fired on set. prosecutors said thas impossible, but these new facts may have derailed their case. lawyers for alec baldwin say they are pleased that involuntary manslaughter charges against him have been dropped. >> i take the gun out slowly, dock the pistol, bang. she hits the grown. >> reporter: that's how the actor described to investigators the moments the prop gun went off while he was rehearsing a scene on the set of the western film "rust." cinematographer halyna hutchins was killed, and director joel souza injured. >> one female shot in the chest -- >> reporter: in a statement, new

mexico special prosecutor said new facts were revealed that require further investigation and added that their decision does not absolve baldwin of criminal culpability, and that charges may be re-filed. >> we have to basically surmise that they didn't think they could prove this beyond a reasonable doubt to a juror. >> reporter: the charges against the weapons supervisor, hannah gutierrez-reed, remains unchanged. >> she's the one where on set it's her job to make sure that something tragic like this doesn't happen. >> reporter: last night, baldwin posted a picture of himself and his wife on instagram saying he owes everything he has to her and his lawyer. baldwin previously settled a civil case from hutchins' husband, but he faces two more suits from other members of her family and the script supervisor. this news comes as "rust" begins to restart production now at the yellowstone film ranch in montana. filming was set to start yesterday with alec baldwin continuing as an actor and producer. anne-marie? >> bradley blackburn in new york.

thank you so much. the supreme court will decide today on whether to allow restrictions on an abortion pill. americans have full access to mifepristone, but that could end after a court tried to impose. it was approved by the fda in 2000. since then more than five million women have used it along with another drug to induce abortions. thousands are still without power in oklahoma this morning after a deadly spring storm. a series of tornadoes plowed through the central part of the state wednesday night. one of the hardest hit areas was mclain county, just out of oklahoma city. that's where three people died and dozens of homes were damaged. residents started cleaning up yesterday after the storm moved out. >> it's material things, but it's still -- it's your heart. your family's worked hard for all this. >> lost everything, five cars,

house, barns, animals, and everything else we own. this is what we have. i'm laughing to keep from crying. >> oklahoma baptist university also took a major hit. nearly every building on campus showed damage. the school will be closed again today. u.s. special forces are on standby for a possible evacuation of theu.s. embassy in sudan. at least one american has been killed in the escalating violence. the week-long fighting has left hundreds of people dead as two rival generals struggle for power. a convoy of vehicles from the american embassy was recently fired upon, but defense officials said there's no indication that americans were targeted. and the search is over for a north carolina man accused of shooting three people including a 6-year-old girl. authorities say 24-year-old robert singletary was arrested yesterday in tampa, florida. he's scheduled to appear in court today.

a neighbor said he yelled at children after a basketball rolled into his yard on tuesday. he came out with a gun and began shooting as parents tried to get their kids to safety. a 6-year-old was wounded along with her parents. adriana diaz has more. there was blood everywhere in the house. >> reporter: kinsley white was shot in the face while playing by her home just out of charlotte. her father was seriously wounded. >> i couldn't get inside in time because he just -- he shot my daddy in the back. >> reporter: witnesses say a neighbor began shooting at them after a basketball rolled onto his yard tuesday. kinsley had a bullet fragment removed from her cheek. her father, who reportedly tried to shoot back, remains hospitalized. as the number of victims of shootings caused by seemingly innocent mistakes mounts, so does the fury. nearly 1,000 miles away, these mothers protested gun violence on the kansas/missouri state

line one week after 16-year-old ralph yarl was shot after ringing the wrong doorbell. >> you have mental health issues everywhere, but when you pair those with absolute chaos in terms of gun legislation, this is what you get. >> gun violence is a public health epidemic -- >>orter:esearchers say studies have shown people are less safe when guns are present. what is driving this increase in shootings? >> we have seen record increases in gun purchasing. we're also seeing increases in fear-based marketing of firearms, as well as stoking fears of political violence, social violence, racially motivated violence. >> reporter: the states with the weakest gun laws have high gun death rates. three times as high as states with the strongest restrictions. >> there is no place you can run from any of this. >> reporter: more young people have died from gun violence than from covid since the start of the pandemic.

this week marks 24 years since the columbine high school shooting. adriana diaz, cbs news, kansas city, missouri. president biden could announce his re-election bid as early as next week. in a video release, sources tell cbs news his team is aiming to make the announcemen mr. biden hasn't officially signed off on the timing. next tuesday marks four years since he announced his last presidential bid which was also by video. meantime, conservative talk radio host larry elder announced that he's running for president. he was the top republican opponent to california governor gavin newsom in a failed recall effort back in 2021. elder is scheduled to speak in iowa this weekend. there was high drama at the maiden launch of the massive starship rocket. >> three, two, one -- >> the liftoff from south texas

newly released dash cam video shows sergeant chad mccoy deliberately crashing into a wrong-way driver to protect other people on the road. this happened on tuesday just outside of salt lake city. mccoy, who just got off work, said he made the split-second decision to hit the pickup truck. the driver of the truck was taken to a hospital as a precaution. canada's busiest airport is investigating a major heist, and there were additional arrests in the alabama birthday party shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports police have made six arrests in a sweet 16 mass shooting in dadeville, alabama. all of them have been charged with reckless murder. according to court documents, five of the suspects opened fire into the crowd killing four people and injuring 32 others on saturday night. court records for the sixth person, a 15-year-old, were not released because of the age. so far there's no word on a motive. the "las vegas review

journal" says the oakland athletics have purchased land near the strip for a new ballpark. the $1.5 billion stadium would seat about 30,000 people and a partially retractable roof. the team could leave oakland as soon as the end of the 2024 season. >> for oakland i think it's going to be devastating. you know, somewhat for the east bay in general but for oakland a huge impact. >> it's sad. it's upsetting. it's an abomination against the baseball gods. >> the athletics played their first game in oakland back in april of 1968. and the "toronto star" says police are investigating the theft of $20 million in gold and other goods from toronto international airport. authorities said a high-value container was stolen on monday after it was offloaded into a cargo facility when the plane landed. everyone working at the airport has been questioned. police call the incident isolated and very rare.
