i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the violence in sudan where an american embassy was evacuated over the weekend. now there are worries about private u.s. citizens still working or living there. more than 400 people have died in the past nine days as two rival generals fight for power. on saturday secretary of state antony blinken monitored the operation to evacuate the u.s. embassy in the capital city of khartoum. president biden issued a statement saying "this tragic violence in sudan has already cost the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians. it's unconscionable, and it must stop." jarred hill is here in new york with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: temporary cease-fires including over the eed holiday failed to end the conflict in sudan. now the evacuation of u.s. embassy staff and families has only intensified the concern for other american citizens who are still in the country. sporadic gunfire could be heard overnight in the capital of

khartoum hours after u.s. forces successfully evacuated dozens of american personnel from the embassy that includes diplomatic workers and a u.s. marine attachment. the state department says 100 u.s. troops were involved in executing the airlift operation during which special forces flew chinook helicopters from the small african country of djibouti to a staging point in ethiopia and then into the capital. secretary of state antony blinken monitored the operation from washington. in a tweet, blinken said operations at the embassy which include consular services have been suspended. >> mr. president? any comment on the evacuation -- evacuation? >> reporter: president biden says he's receiving regular updates on the team for their ongoing work with americans in sudan. the state department says there are no immediate plans to evacuate the hundreds of u.s. civilians who are currently there. >> i am concerned about the safety and security of u.s. nationals who have been serving in humanitarian missions or in

other ways across the country. >> reporter: last week, republican house foreign affairs committee chair michael mccaul told cbs news, quote, there will be consequences for those who interfere in the safe passage of american citizens. more than 400 people including one american have been killed and thousands injured since fighting broke out earlier this month between two rival generals in sudan. a number of european countries have also been rushing to get their citizens out of sudan. and again, while the u.s. is not expecting another mass air evacuation, officials are looking into ways to support americans who take other land and sea routes out of the country. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you. ahead on "cbs mornings," we'll talk with john kirby who's the national security council coordinator for strategic communications about the latest on the evacuation efforts in sudan. a former minneapolis police officer who was convicted of manslaughter in the shooting death of daunte wright is set to

be released from prison today. kim potter has served about 16 man dung a 21 traffic stop.ence potter said she meant to use her taser on wright as he tried to drive away but fired her gun by mistake. president biden is scheduled to meet today with three tennessee lawmakers who faced expulsion votes after taking part in the gun-control protest on the state house floor. two black democratic representatives, justin pearson and justin jones, were expelled by the republican-patrolled -- republican-controlled legislature. gloria johnson, who is white, was not. pearson and jones have since been reinstated on an interim basis by local officials. the gun-control protest followed last month's deadly school shooting in nashville. a florida prosecutor has ordered an investigation after another case of someone firing shots at people at the wrong address. it happened earlier this month

near fort lauderdale. the couple says they mistakenly turned onto the wrong driveway while making a late-night grocery delivery for instacart. the shooter told police he feared for his children's safety and shot at the vehicle after it ran over his foot. no one wurul been dead.wnnd they wsh. understand we were on their property, but that's not how you go about things. >> the couple denies running over the man's foot. the prosecutor says that he wants the davie, florida, police department to turn over its reports after it closed the case without consulting the state attorney's office. an investigation is under way after nine teenagers were shot during an after prom party in texas. authorities say about 250 people were at a house yesterday in jasper county when shots rang out. that's about 130 miles northeast of houston. the injuries were not life threatening.

officials say a second nearby shooting shortly after may be connected. no one was hurt at that location. and summer travel is just about here, but it may not be smooth sailing in the air. airlines and other aviation officials are signaling there's trouble ahead. elise preston reports from l.a.x. >> reporter: the summer travel rush is starting early this year. los angeles international airport, many flyers have locked down their vacation plans and are ready to go. >> we are making up for lost time and trying to see family. >> reporter: pent-up demand is expected to make this the busiest summer at airports in four years. flyers are bracing for packed planes and soaring prices. >> we started searching flights a couple years ago. it's gone up $600 for flights, $300 per ticket. >> reporter: unlike lower food and gas prices, inflation is still hitting travelers hard. the cost of an airline ticket has climbed 17% from last year.

a hotel stay, 8%. finding a seat could be tough. delta says it's already sold 75% of its international flights. another hurdle for some -- getting a passport in time. what has the wait been long? >> for the passports? most difficult part is you don't know when they're going to get here. >> reporter: u.s. state department offices nationwide are swamped with about half a million applications every week. a jump of about 30% from last summer. >> you need the original only -- >> reporter: it can take up to three months to get a passport. it used to be six to nine weeks. enough to worry some travelers about their trip going bust. >> you're waiting to get your tickets, though, until after you get your passport. >> yes. >> reporter: if you already have a passport, check the expiration date. officials recommend the passport be valid for at least six months after you leave the u.s. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles.

there was another kind of travel problem in the skies over ohio. a bird strike sparked an engine fire on an american airlines flight yesterday shortly after takeoff from an airport in columbus. the phoenix-bound flight returned to the airport where firefighters doused the flames. no one was hurt. disney says it is temporarily suspending some of its fire effects at its theme parks worldwide after a fire at disneyland. anamatronic dragon burst into flames during the popular "fantasmic" show. several disneyland workers were treated for smoke inhalation, and the area around the fire was evacuated and closed. coming up, terrifying collapse. two homes in utah slide off a cliff. and later, "cbs mornings" host gayle king tells us why she's excited about her upcoming primetime show. this is the "cbs morning news." hy

access to the abortion drug mifepristone continues after the supreme court intervened on friday. the high court granted emergency requests from the biden administration and the drug's maker. it follows a federal judge's decision to revoke the sdr sdrsdrug's -- drug's 23-year-old fda approval while a lawsuit continues. the case now heads to a new orleans-based appeals court in may. two homes slid off a cliff in utah, and we remember a pearl harbor survivor. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports one of the last two remaining survivors of the "uss arizona" battleship has died at the age of 102. ken potts died friday in his home -- at his home, rather, in provo, utah. he was working as a crane operator shuttling supplies to the "arizona" when it was bombed during the surprise japanese attack on pearl harbor in 1941.

the ship sank nine minutes later. nearly 1,200 sailors on board were killed. "the salt lake tribune" says two homes collapsed into a canyon due to sliding soil. >> oh, my -- wow! >> video shows the top of one of the homes falling down a hill saturday in draper, utah, about 20 miles south of salt lake city. both houses were evacuated last october because they were unstable. two other nearby homes were evacuated after the collapse. officials say other houses will also be evacuated as melting snow impacts the ground. and "usa today" says new photos of prince louis were released to mark his 5th birthday yesterday. one photo shows the smiling prince being pushed by his mother, princess kate, in a wheelbarrow. another is a closeup of his huge grin. the photos were taken earlier this month in windsor. louis is fourth in line to the throne behind his father, prince william, and his siblings,

george and charlotte. a coronation ceremony will be held for his grandfather, king charles, next week. from the mornings to primetime. a big box retailer has filed for bankruptcy, and now's your chance to become a citizen scientist for nasa. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed out a quiet week on wall street friday with slight gains for the major stock indices. the dow gained 22. the nasdaq was up 12. s&p 500 took in just 3 points. you can add another b to bed bath & beyond, bankrupt. the chain has filed for bankruptcy protection saying it will eventually close all of its stores. founded in 1971, it's not good news for the company's 14,000 workers, down from 32,000 just last year. for now it says stores will remain open as will online sales. the stock is down about 88% this year. lyft layoffs. the ride hail company's david risher told employees he's significantly reducing the work force as part of restructuring. reports are the cuts will

eliminate at least 1,200 positions or 30% of its staff. we are not talking drivers since lyft does not count them as employees. these are software engineers and other white-collar workers. staff will find out if they still have their jobs by thursday. this isn't white noise, this is space noise. nasa is looking for volunteers to listen to sounds of low-frequency waves generated by solar particles. it's all to help humans better prepare for future space weather events. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this monday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. some news close to the cbs news family. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the owner of an unclaimed powerball lottery ticket worth dwloirs 1 -- $1.5 million has until today to claim their prize. the ticket was sold at a mobile gas station in santa clara county in california on october 26th. it's one of two tickets sold that matched five numbers but missed the powerball number. the other ticket holder has already come forward. if unclaimed the money will go to the california public schools. new york's metropolitan museum of art is getting ready for this year's star-studded met gala which will take place next monday. this year's hosts for the event include "vogue's" anna wintour, along with emmy winning writer
