i'm anne-marie green. tens of millions of americans from central texas to florida are under the threat of severe weather from a slow-moving weather system. this is what it looked like near dallas last night as hail the size of tennis balls fell. large pieces of hail also fell in waco. the national weather service says damaging winds, severe anr. ng powerful winds to vero beach, florida, yesterday. there's also a threat of severe weather along the gulf coast with new orleans in the possible cross harris. federal prosecutors are expected to ask a judge today to keep alleged pentagon document leaker jack teixeira behind bars. te massachusetts air national guardsman allegedly posted hundreds of highly classified military documents on social media. he is accused of violating the espionage act. in court papers filed last night, the justice department said the 21-year-old may still have access to secret information he could expose.

prosecutors say he could be a grave threat to national security if he's released while awaiting trial. meanwhile, the air force said it temporarily suspended two commanders from the same massachusetts national guard unit where teixeira worked pending further investigation. the battle over the nation's debt ceiling has intensified. the u.s. could default on its bills for the very first time ever if the borrowing cap is not increased. last night the gop-controlled there are strings attached -- setting up a showdown with the senate and the white house. jarred hill is in new york with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. so the debt ceiling bill is seen as more of a tactical win for house speaker kevin mccarthy. getting his party together rather than a legislative win. it's almost certainly not going to become law, but some hope it actually pushes president biden to the negotiating table before the nation is pushed into default.he bill is passed.

[ cheers ] >> reporter: house republicans cheered the approval of a bill that would raise the nation's debt limit by $1.5 trillion, as well as cut federal spending by around $4.5 trillion. >> we've done our job. we're the only ones to lift the debt limit to make sure this economy's not in jeopardy. >> reporter: passage of the limit saved grow act is a major victory for house speaker kevin mccarthy as his caucus tries to push the white house to the negotiating table. >> happy to meet with mccarthy, but not on whether or not the debt limit gets extended. that's not negotiable. it would be an absolute crime to not extend the debt limit. >> reporter: yesterday the white house repeated its calls for a clean debt ceiling bill with no conditions after threatening to veto the house republicans' measure. meanwhile, majority leader chuck schumer pronounced it dead on arrival in a democrat-controlled senate. >> the gop's default on america act does not bring us any closer to avoiding a first-ever default.

>> reporter: the department of treasury has employed extraordinary measures to avoid default since the nation hit its borrowing limit in mid-january. the congressional budget office estimates that the country could default on its debt in july, though some analysts say as early as june if congress does not raise the debt ceiling. and again, as you mentioned, default has never happened in the nation's history and would likely send shock waves through the economy. so the clock is ticking for lawmakers to figure out something over the next couple of weeks. >> it is. jarred hill in new york. thank you. republicans in montana, the legislature there, banned the state's first openly transgender lawmaker from the house floor. it came days after democrat zooey zephyr said her colleagues would have blood on their hands if they banned gender-affirming care for minors. on monday, seven demonstrators in the chamber were arrested after zephyr was denied an opportunity to speak. just before yesterday's vote to punish her, republicans allowed

zephyr to make a statement. >> when the speaker asks me to apologize on behalf of decorum, who he is really asking me to do is be silent when my community is facing bills that get us killed. >> zephyr will be allowed to vote remotely, but she can't participate in debates for the remainder of the current legislative session which ends next week. a former columnist for "elle" magazine is expected to be back on the stand today in her civil lawsuit against former president donald trump. e. jean carroll claims trump raped her in a new york city department store nearly 30 years ago. elaine quijano has more. >> reporter: e. jean carroll took the stand in the civil trial against former president donald trump. and in graphic detail told jurors, quote, i'm here because donald trump raped me. the former "elle" magazine writer and tv talk show host alleges trump overpowered her in a new york dressing room in the mid '90s. describing the alleged assault, she said, "he put his shoulder

against me and held me against the wall. he put his whole weight on me. he pulled down my tights." then she says that's when he raped her. carroll never reported the alleged assault to police, but she says shortly after she told two friends what happened. they are scheduled to testify. carroll first shared her story publicly in her 2019 autobiography. by then, it was too late for a criminal investigation. but a new york state law allowed carroll to file a civil lawsuit. trump says he has no influence -- no plans to attend the trial and has repeatedly denied the allegations. what is the task for donald trump's attorneys in this case? >> donald trump's attorneys must destroy this story. he has got to show this jury that the story of e. jean carroll, that what she tells this jury is not credible. and if he cannot destroy her credibility, she will carry the day.

>> reporter: e. jean carroll is expected to be back on the stand on thursday where she will be cross-examined. now the judge gave a stern warning to trump's attorneys telling them that if their client continues to post about this case, he could face legal sanctions. elaine quijano, cbs news, new york. disney is suing florida governor ron desantis for what it calls a targeted campaign of government retaliation against the company. the federal lawsuit claims desantis punished disney by taking over its special self-governing theme park district. disney says it was in retaliation for the company opposing a state law banning lessons about sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. a spokeswoman for desantis said, "we are unaware of any legal right that a company has to operate its own government or maintain special privileges not held by other businesses in the state." coming up, caught on camera. a minivan erupts into flames. we're going to show what cops
