soldiers are dead after two army apache helicopters crashed in alaska. itapped ne the community of healy about 80 miles southwest of fairbanks. the helicopters from fort wainwright were returning from a training mission when they collided in the air. another soldier was injured and taken to a hospital. the accident is under investigation. it's the second crash involving army apache helicopters in alaska this year. also breaking overnight, russia fired more than 20 cruise missiles and two drones at kyiv and other parts of ukraine including to ukrainian officials. at least eight were killed. an apartment building and house were hit. ukraine says it's air force intercepted 11 cruise missiles and two drones over kyiv. it was the first attack on the capital in nearly two months. cbs news has confirmed that former vice president mike pence appeared before a federal grand jury investigating alleged efforts by then-president donald trump to overturn the 2020

election results. pence testified for several hours yesterday about the events leading up to the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this is unprecedented. a former vice president being compelled to testify against his president. now, we don't know what mike pence said to this grand jury because, again, all of this is kept in secret as always. but we do know that former president trump fought in the courts to keep him quiet and lost. former vice president mike pence's suv pulled off from a d.c. federal courthouse thursday evening after he appeared for more than seven hours in front of a grand jury according to sources with knowledge of his testimony. it's part of special counsel jack smith's probe into former president donald trump and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. >> one would think that the special counsel is very close to finishing. this is indeed probably the most significant witness.

>> reporter: his testimony came hours an appeals court ruled against the former president's emergency request to pause pence's appearance citing executive privilege. >> i hope mike is going to do the right thing. i hope so. the electoral college as president of the u.s. senate. pence cited that role in his own attempt to challenge a subpoena. last month a federal judge ruled that pence is constitutionally protected from questions related to his role in congress but that he must still testify about any illegal acts by trump. >> there may be no better witness about what the president knew and was going to do and tried to do than the vice president himself. >> reporter: trump was in new hampshire campaigning yesterday. he's claimed that the special counsel's investigation is politically motivated. now sources say that pence did a lot of work with his lawyers to get ready for yesterday, focusing especially on the timeline of january 6th as well

as what he could and could not say based on all those previous court rulings. anne-marie, back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. severe weather is again impacting parts of the south. in the florida panhandle, a tornado touched down causing damage in the community of hosford yesterday. thousands lost power. elsewhere in the panhandle, a man was reported in critical condition after being struck by lightning on a pier in panama city beach. local reports say when first responders arrived, a bystander was administering cpr. the weather is part of a system that could produce damaging hail, high winds, flooding, and more tornadoes across the south from texas to florida. a massachusetts air national guardsman accused of leaking classified materials remains in jail. whether he stays until the start of his trial will be decided by a judge at a later date. 21-year-old jack teixeira appeared in court wearing orange prison garb. he faces up to 25 years in

prison if convicted. prosecutors say more charges could be coming. here's nicole sganga. >> reporter: prosecutors asked a federal judge to keep jack teixeira behind bars pending trial, arguing thursday that he is a flight risk and poses a risk to national security. the massachusetts air national guardsman is charged under the espionage act for allegedly posting secret military information in an online chat room. the government claims not all of it has publicly surfaced, and that it would be of tremendous value to hostile nation states that could offer him safe harbor, an attempt to facilitate his escape from the united states. prosecutors say a gun locker was found in teixeira's bedroom along with rifles, ak-style weapons, and a bazooka. the court documents allege the 21-year-old, who had a top-secrete clearance, searched on line about recent mass

killings and posted that he wanted to, quote, kill a ton of people. teixeira's defense lawyer highlighted his lack of a criminal history and argued he's not a flight risk. >> there's an ongoing investigation which will tell us a lot more. >> reporter: the pentagon is reviewing it's clearance protocols and says the leak is an isolated incident. >> it's important not necessarily to take the actions of one individual and somehow paint a picture that that indicates a systemic breakdown. >> reporter: court documents show teixeira was suspended in high school for talking about molotov cocktails, guns, and racial threats. he was arrested this month at his mother's home where investigators say he tried to cover his tracks by smashing a tablet, laptop, and a gaming console. nicole sganga, cbs news. wnba star brittney griner says that she will never play overseas again unless she's representing the u.s. griner spoke to reporters for the first time yesterday since being imprisoned in russia for nearly ten months on drug charges.

influential man in my life. he was the smartest, most generous, kindest person i've ever known." jerry springer was 79. james corden officially signed off last night after eight years hosting the "late late show." first he hosted a primetime special in front of an energetic crowd. he reunited with tom cruise for one last skit. ♪ it's a problem free philosophy ♪ >> corden and cruise, as you can see, dressed as characters from "the lion king." they performed at a theater in hollywood. corden's final guests were a smash, literally. will ferrell and harry styles took a sledgehammer and destroyed the desk on stage. but it wasn't the one corden normally sits at. that's where he used part of his farewell speech to address deep divisions in the u.s. >> and we have to try as best we can to look for the light, look

till was kidnapped, tortured, and killed. his murder became a catalyst for the civil rights movement. a 13-year-old boy saved a busload of students in michigan, and the head of the federal reserve was pranked. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports fed chair jerome powell was tricked into a fake call with madison pranksters. the russians pretended to be ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy during the january call. videos of the conversation where powell appeared to discuss the economic impact of interest rate hikes were posted on social media. a fed spokesperson said no sensitive or confidential information was discussed. and the "detroit free press" says a michigan middle school student saved a busload of children after the driver passed out. video from the bus wednesday shows 13-year-old dylan reeves springing into action. he hit the brake, helped steer the bus to a stop, and told students to call 911. there were about 60 kids on board. his parents spoke yesterday

the ride-hailing company said the most common items are clothing, phones, and backpacks or purses. the most unique items with a danny devito christmas ornament, a toy poodle, and blue cap that said "i love the smell of jet fuel in the morning." the most forgetful cities are jacksonville, florida, san antonio, texas, and palm springs, california. spacex is already eyeing a second launch for its massive starship rocket, and chipotle is honoring health care workers. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: a huge rally in the markets today amid some optimism the federal reserve could stop hiking interest rates. the dow gained 524 points. the nasdaq was up by 287, and the s&p 500 gained 79 points. nasa says spacex wants to launch another starship rocket this summer. this after the first rocket blew a hole in the launchpad last week.
