i'm matt piper, cbs news, new york. it's monday, may 1st, 2023. this is the "cbs morning news." massive manhunt. law enforcement in texas is scrambling to find a mass shooting suspect who vanished without a trace after allegedly gunning down his neighbors. the reward now being offered for helping find him. wicked weather. severe storms are lashing the east coast bringing heavy rain and tornadoes. the state of emergency just declared after dozens of homes were leveled in virginia. game seven madness. the amazing moments from not one, not two, but three playoff elimination games. we'll show you the history that was made. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green.

law enforcement officials are hoping the public can help find a mass shooting suspect who took off after allegedly gunning down his neighbors. authorities say $80,000 in reward money is being offered to help find 38-year-old francisco oropesa. they say he fled after he shot and killed five neighbors including a 9-year-old boy. the fbi admits right now they have zero leads on where he may be. jarred hill is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. that's why they say they widened the search area for the suspect as far as 20 miles from the scene of that shooting. what's described as an almost execution-style killing has left this rural community north of houston broken and afraid. the fbi says hundreds of law enforcement officers from over a dozen agencies on actively searching for 38-year-old francisco oropesa, the man suspected of killing five of his neighbors friday night in cleveland, texas. authorities are now offering

$80,000 in reward money in an effort to turn up any leads. >> we're asking everyone for your help so we can bring this suspect or this monster i will call him to justice. >> reporter: according to officials, the suspect's rampage started late friday night after a neighbor asked himst shooting his gun in his yard so they could put their baby to sleep. that's when investigators say oropesa who had been drinking took an ar-style rifle to the house and opened fire killing five. the youngest identified as daniel enrique laso. daniel's mother was also killed. daniel's father along with other relatives and members of the community came together for a prayer vigil yesterday. garcia later told reporters that he was the one who spoke to oropesa before the deadly shootings. he said he escaped the hail of bullets by jumping through a window. >> we're looking for closure for this family. >> reporter: authorities

recovered the rifle used in the shootings but say oropesa could still be armed and dangerous. now, investigators phone his phone and clothes in some woods nearby, but they think that he has since left that area. the fbi says he's likely contacted friends, and investigators are hoping that this reward money, the $80,000, will encourage somebody to say something. >> here's hoping. jarred hill in new york. thank you. well, that was one of several mass shootings over the weekend across the country. in mississippi a 19-year-old man has been charged with killing two teenagers and wounding four others at a house party. cameron everest brand was taken into custody at his home yesterday after a shooting about 30 miles west of biloxi. all the victims are between 15 and 18 years old. there's no word on a motive. breaking overnight, california regulators have seized struggling first republic bank. the san francisco-based bank is

the third major bank to fail in two months following the collapse of silicon valley bank and signature bank in march. officials say they accepted a bid from jpmorgan chase to assume all of first republic's deposits. skyler henry has more on the banking crisis. >> reporter: federal regulators are hoping to restore confidence in the u.s. banking sector after inal turmoil at t s it followed the collapse of silicon valley bank in march and a federal reserve review of why it happened. >> this is a huge finding. this is a bit of a seismic moment. we have found out this week in the fed's own report that these banks are not well regulated. >> reporter: the fed is also tracking new signs of inflation including stubbornly high prices on food and energy. the board meets wednesday, expected to hike interest rates again to tamp down rising prices. a big change for prospective home buyers who need a government-backed mortgage. there's a new fee structure that could potentially lower closing

costs for borrowers with lower credit scores, but hike them for people with stronger scores. on capitol hill, lawmakers are still debating the debt ceiling. the republican-led house passed a bill that would raise the government spending limit by $1.5 trillion. it's not expected to pass in the democrat-controlled senate, but republicans hope it will pressure president biden to negotiate with them. >> it's been over two months sia down wh n id clearo ruout thclo tsideing he's not going to be hostage in having veterans' cuts on health care and having cuts on k-through-12 education. he's saying we can discuss that, we can negotiate, but first pay your bills. >> reporter: economists say the government could run out of money by july. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. breaking news overnight as a strong tornado caused extensive damage in virginia. the city of virginia beach declared a state of emergency after a severe storm and twister

moved through the area overnight. officials say between 50 and 100 homes were damaged. the fire department said crews responded to multiple calls of major damage including downed trees, roof collapses, and gas leaks. there are no immediate reports of injuries, though. meanwhile in florida, a tornado touched down in palm beach gardens saturday. on the left side of your screen you can see the powerful winds flipping a car over. vehicles ended up overturned throughout the area, including some landing on top of one another. the ef2 tornado with winds hitting 130 miles per hour also toppled trees and damaged homes. there were no reports of major injuries or deaths. so we turn now to the violence in sudan where there is some hope for a halt to the ongoing violence. sudan's army and its rival military group say they plan to extend a cease-fire for another three days. now it follows international pressure to allow civilians to

evacuate, but both sides are accusing the other of violating the cease-fire. it comes as a second u.s. convoy is helping evacuate those in need. the navy's "usns brunswick" arrived in saudi arabia carrying 100 americans. the first convoy carried as many as 300 americans to safety. coming up, lifesaving lift. a surfer stranded in rough seas gets help from a helicopter crew. and the president hosted the white house correspondents' dinner. we'll show you some of the familiar faces there. so a coast guard diver was lowered from a helicopter and hoisted the surfer to safety. the white house correspondents' dinner featured big names and big laughs, and the head of the cia is being linked to jeffrey epstein. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports jeffrey epstein's private calendar reveals prominent names including current cia chief william burns. it reveals scheduled meetings after epstein served time in 2008 for a sex crime involving a teenage girl. the documents show burns had three meetings scheduled with epstein in 2014 when he was deputy secretary of state. a cia spokesperson says burns did not know anything about epstein at the time others than he was an expert in finance. the "journal" could not fair tie -- verify whether every scheduled meeting took place. "usa today" says 14 people were hurt when a roof collapsed at a house near ohio state university.

authorities say the roof collapsed onto a front porch some were trapped under the debris and had to be freed. >> we've heard numbers between 15 and 45 students on a rooftop that was not designed to have anybody on it. it gave way. >> the victims were taken to hospitals and reported in stable condition. npr says president biden poked fun at himself during the white house correspondents' dinner, cracking jokes about his own age and took shots at former president donald trump and the media at saturday's star-studded event in washington. the evening was hosted by "daily show" correspondent roy wood jr. who poked fun at mr. biden, florida governor ron desantis and new york congressman george santos. celebrity guests included "cbs mornings" co-host gayle king and actors such as academy award winner ke huy quan. president biden also struck a serious note talking about two american journalists detained

with kanye west, and could artificial intelligence cause millions of people to be out of a job? matt pieper has today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks advanced friday while economic date reinforced expectations that the federal reserve could hike interest rates this week. the dow gained 272. the nasdaq was up 84. the s&p 500 took in 34. the world economic forum is out with some bleak news. it's just published a report based on surveys of more than 800 companies which finds 14 million jobs worldwide will disappear in the next five years. that is 2% of current employment. and ai could be a real factor. the increase of artificial intelligence could put many roles at risk as robots are set to replace humans in some roles. adidas just got hit with a class-action lawsuit. it's getting sued by investors over its partnership with kanye west. the sportswear company ended its collaboration with the rapper last year after he made a sear -- he made a series of
