>> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i am juliette goodrich i for sara tonight. it started feeling like summer and then th storm hit. there is more on the way even tonight. this is a pretty late-season storm. check out this video out of berkeley. the area was hit with intense bouts of rain and hail and it overwhelmed the sewers, streets we even had minor flooding. let's take a live look now at our bay area bridges. things look pretty calm. this is not the last of the rain. paul heggen is tracking the storm an what we can expect for tomorrow morning's commute. >> it looks like it will be wet so extra time out the door once you are on the roads. extra stopping distance is never a ba idea. let's take a look at what is happening out there right

now. the next batch of rain is sliding up from the south as we speak and has been moving into san francisco . let's assume in for a closer look. we are talking about moderate rainfall rates. it is a little bit over emphasize, but considering it i the month of may where we don' see much rain, it is kind of remarkable that we are seeing this much moisture from the south. it is not going to be enough to cause a flooding threat but will be inconvenient for the morning commute. there is more rain falling into the santa cruz mountains. san jose, a lot of the rain is getting hung up in the santa cruz mountains due to the rain shado effect in the santa clara valley. moisture surging up fro the south will eventually climb a little bit north of the golde gate. let's switch over to futurecast for the rest of tonight. we will see the rain sticking around, especially closer to the coast. inland parts of the east bay, you will see later amounts of this

victim here is the lone survivor. >> the attacks with knives were particularly brutal and violent >> reporter: davis police chief describe the unique nature of these attacks. >> these were not stabbings where a person would normally b a victim of a robbery or something like that. there were many very significant knife wounds. >> reporter: officers had converged on the davis police department in an effort to help solve the crimes, including the fbi. retired fbi supervisory agent kevin baker said that knife attacks can give investigators more clues to wor with in some cases because of the violent nature of stabbings suspects often leave unintended clues behind. >> things can fall out of your pockets and fall off you. fiber can come off your body. hairs can fall off your body.

banned from united airlines. man accused of killing tech executive bob lee. nime momeni 's arraignment was pushed back for a third time. his appearanc was overshadowed by the release of the toxicology report, revealing drugs in his system, however the report says that it was the stab wounds to his ches that actually killed him. prosecutors say that momeni stabbed lead to death followin a dispute over momeni's sister. she was concerned he was doing drugs with lee. the defense attorney says these details are expected to be used in momeni's favor. >> absolutely the toxicology reports factor in! we all wante the autopsy. bubbly's system is like the walgreens of recreational drugs. >> momeni is due back in court

on may 18th. now to a big loss for downtown san francisco. nordstrom is planning to close a flagship store in the westfield mall after 35 years. the nordstrom rack right across the street also closing this summer. as katie nielsen reports, this is the latest blo to downtown with yet another major chain leaving. the reason is no secret. >> adriana says she lives in millbrae and is only here because her husband has a business lunch near by. >> it is truly disappointing what you see on the streets! i am walking into stores and i don't feel safe. >> reporter: the five-story nordstrom opened a market stree almost 10 years ago in 2014. in a statement, mall managers said that the closure of nordstrom underscores the deteriorating situation in downtown san francisco. a growing number of retailers and businesses are

leaving the area due to unsafe conditions for customers, retailers and employees. employees like tatyana. >> i do feel bad. i knew that i was going to happen. i knew it. look at the situation around. >> reporter: she works at the fragrance counter and said customers used to be split evenly between tourists and locals, mostly business people who work in the area and would shop on their lunch breaks or after work. now, she says there are hardly any customers at all something the nordstrom alluded to, saying that the dynamics of downtown san francisco market have changed dramatically , impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability t operate successfully, a problem that some shoppers say was caused by poor management by city leaders. >> many decades of bad policy, but ultimately the people who w elect to keep our streets safe have to be held accountable. >> we are seeing a lot of reaction online. state senator scott wiener tweeted that the closure was a long time coming, but it means we need to reimagine how downtown could

look. city supervisor matt dorsey tweeted that this shows why it is so urgent to have a fully staffed police department we had spring showers in th bay today and the sierra got some may snow. may snow! this i from today? >> yeah, it has been a weird weather pattern. snow levels dropping down to around 4000, maybe 4500 feet. >> berkeley snow lab, what are they saying? three inches of snow fell overnight. we could b seeing some more. >> they're going to pick up som snow here and there. we will pick up more rain. the storm system that is causing it will back up a little bit, so that will affect how things shake out. but more snow in the month of may. not what you would ordinarily expect. here is the culprit for the storm system that is basically parked on top of us. it is starting to retrograde. it is moving to the west instead of the usual

direction with everything movin from left to right across the map. that means it is able to send more moisture towards the bay area that is moving in righ now, but eventually it will stall out again and get a littl kick to the east. that will happen over the next 36 hours o so. here is the latest batch of moisture indicating moderate to localized rainfall but no significant flooding even as this latest batch of rain moves in. let's switch to futurecast as we head through the next couple of days. you will see widespread light to moderate rain for the morning commute. does not necessarily mean it will rain everywhere, but i would count on splashing throug plenty of puddles on your way t work tomorrow morning and as much time as you can allow yourself. it will probably benefit you. showers are going to taper off to more of an off and on pattern. that will continue through the afternoon. again, not going to rain everywhere all the time, but keep the umbrella and the rain jacket handy. as the storm system drifts further down to our self, it eventually moves

inland and it is going to lose the inflow over the bay area. the rain chances will be much fuel and far between and we should be drying out entirely b the time we hit the end of the workweek on friday. how much additional rain on top of what we already picked up? anywhere from a few hundredths of an inc to potentially around a half-inch of additional rain on the upper end of things. again, take the specific numbers in this city with a big grain of salt. this is one of these patterns that is hard to pin down the exact amounts because it is not well organized, but still, we are talking about mor rain in the month of may. that is far from ordinary. temperatures tonight dropping down by a few degrees. high temperatures tomorrow are stil on the cool side, only mid-to-upper 50s on the coasts, low 60s for the rest of the bay are pposed to be well into the

mid-70s for inland parts of the bay area. we are going to be close to 10 degrees below that with a rather unseasonably cool day. the cool weather will continue in the seven-day forecast, even once the forecas dries out, which will happen by friday and over the weekend. temperatures will still be well below average through the weekend with a bit more of a warm-up monday and tuesday. it will be more noticeable further inland, but even there temperatures have to struggle t get up into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees by monday and tuesday of next week. it is a really long range timeframe beyond the seven-day forecast, morro bay 10 to 14 day outlook that shows a return to near average temperatures especially for inland parts of the bay are , but along the coast you are locked into the 50s for the nex several days. once again, umbrella, rain jacket are usefu accessories >> one more day, thank you! contract talks between the teachers union and oakland unified school district are still ongoing. thousands of teachers will hit the picket line on thursday . if they don' reach an agreement for better pay and benefits by then they are asking for a 23% raise in

classroom improvements. the district is offering raises between 13 and 22% plus one tim bonuses. popular late-night shows ar going dark tonight in the middl of the first hollywood writer's strike in 15 years. unionized t and movie writers picketed for better pay outside of major studios today . the writers guild of america failed to reac a deal with a key trade association and now 11,000 people are on strike. the dispute could have a cascading effect on major film and tv productions but late-night is feeling the immediate impact. all the top shows from the dail show to jimmy kimmel live to th late show with stephen colbert are actually making plans right now for reruns, but colbert is standing behind his writers during this strike. >> without our writers, the sho would be e te wigumbt loofring >> during the last strike the
