shot and killed five of his neighbors is over. authorities say a tip to the fbi led to the arrest of francisco oropesa. they say he was found hiding under a pile of laundry in the closet of a home near houston. police say he opened fire last friday after his neighghbors asd him to stop firing a gun into his yard because it was keeping a baby awake. jarred hill is in new york with more as all of this, how he was caught. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there were some concerns that oropesa might have gone into another state, maybe another country in the four days it took to find him. authorities tracked down the man accused of killing five people less than 20 miles from the scene of the crime. this is the moment francisco oropesa was taken into custody, ending a massive multi-day manhunt in texas. >> he was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry. >> reporter: the 38-year-old suspect was found nearly 30 minutes from where he allegedly shot and killed five of his

neighbors late friday near cleveland, texas. what authorities called an onneighborskedim to firing his gun in his yard. the victims all believed to be from honduras range in age in 31 to just 9 years old. >> very sad time for the victims, and i hope that this will bring them some comfort. > reporter: authorities say the arrest which involved multiple law enforcement agencies including the fbi and u.s. marshals came less than two hours after a tip was called in to the fbi. >> we just want to thank the person who had the courage and bravery to call in the suspect's locations. >> reporter: the san jacinto sheriff said oropesa faces five counts of murder and is being held on $5 million bond. the sheriff says the person who called in the tip is expected to get the $80,000 reward money, but they will not say why oropesa was at that house in particular. back to you. >> interesting. jarred hill in new york. thank you.

the biden administration is trying to get ahead of an expected major surge in migrants at our southern border in the coming weeks. it's sending 1,500 active duty troops to help customs and border protection. nicole d'antonio has the details. >> reporter: the biden administration is preparing for a surge at the southern border, sending 1,500 troops to help customs and border protection. >> these personnel will be performing tasks like data entry and warehouse support. they will not be performing law enforcement functions or interacting with immigrants or migrants. >> reporter: next week the trump-era immigration policy known as title 42 is set to expire. that will end the ability to use the pandemic as a reason to deny entry into the u.s. the pentagon says the soldiers will be deployed for 90 days, adding to the already 2,500 national guard members at the border. >> these troops arrive as early as may 10th. >> reporter: the administration

is preparing for as many as 10,000 migrants to cross the border next week, almost doubling the daily average from march. >> title 42 might as well already have been lifted. >> reporter: texas republican tony gonzalez represents el paso which has seen a 130% spike in arrivals at the border. >> the administration needs to be sending judges to the border, and these judges need to get these asylum cases heard in days, not years. >> reporter: congress has struggled to tackle immigration reform even though both sides agree there's a crisis. >> the current situation is intolerable. we need more resources. >> reporter: hundreds of migrants are waiting just a few feet from the u.s., hoping to seek asylum. nicole d'antonio, cbs news, washington. police are asking a california community for help as they try to determine if the same suspect is involved in three stabbings in less than a week near the university of california davis. a woman sleeping in a homeless

encampment is in critical condition after she was stabbed through her tent late monday. last week, a 20-year-old student and a 50-year-old man were stabbed to death in different parks near campus. an overnight shelter-in-place order for the school was lifted just yesterday. a shocking scene in the air as a passenger on a united airlines flight allegedly assaulted a flight attendant before trying to jump from a cabin door. as cleave cleave -- kris van cleave shows us, incidents like this are happening more and moron. >> reporter: dramatic video of a red eye turning into a black eye as a passenger gets fighting mad over a seat assignment, even appearing to throw punches at an airline employee before allegedly trying to make a run for it by opening a cabin door at san francisco's airport late sunday night. >> i was completely terrified. i was right in front of him the whole time. >> reporter: naya jimenez shot this video. >> you see things go viral and never think you'll be the one in that situation.

>> reporter: in march a dispute between two travelers turned into a fist fight. in dallas ahead of a flight to phoenix. disruptive passenger incidents skyrocketed during the pandemic to nearly 6,000 in 2021. while they've declined since the lifting of the mask mandate, they are still happening more frequently than pre-pandemic. during the first four months of this year, there were 586 reported. >> if someone chooses to act up, my message to them is to stay home because if you act up we're going to come after you with everything that we have. >> that was kris van cleave reporting. did you notice something familiar about last night's late-night shows? they are now relying on reruns after writers began striking across the country. elise preston has a look at the first day of strikes and the impact it's already causing. >> reporter: they put down their pens -- [ chants ] and picked up picket signs. >> we're going to keep striking until we get what we want. >> reporter: for viewers the

in the opposite direction lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median, striking the stopped car head on. amazingly there were only minor injuries. the last of the officers involved in the death of george floyd has been convicted. plus, a scary arrest outside buckingham palace just days before king charles' coronation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the bbc reports a man was arrested outside buckingham palace. police say the man was taken into custody yesterday after throwing what's believed to be shotgun cartridges onto the grounds. authorities say they also found a knife and a suspicious bag in the man's possession. police carried out a controlled explosion as a precaution. they don't think it's terror related. it comes days before king charles' coronation. "the star-tribune" says former minneapolis police officer tou thao was found guilty in connection with the killing of george floyd in 2020. a minnesota judge convicted thao of aiding and abetting manslaughter for holding back bystanders while other officers

policy meeting, the fed will make an announcement on interest rates this afternoon. this as concerns loom over america's banking sector and fear of a recession is growing. experts believe this could be the last rate hike before a pause, and it comes as the labor market is cooling. u.s. job openings dipped to 9.6 million in march, the lowest level since 2021. jenny craig is warning of mass layoffs. the weight-loss company is reportedly looking for a buyer while it plans to cut jobs and close some of its 500 centers. a spokesperson said the company is transitioning from a brick and mortar retail business to an e-commerce-driven model. and it's breakfast and dessert all in one. general mills is bringing kit kat cereal to grocery stores across the country this spring. a standard sized box will look much like the candy's distinct red wrapper and cost you $5.69. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this wednesday
