from kpix, this is late and is with sara donchey on cbs new bay area. >> will talk about the sideshow in a minute but tonight there i another big story in oakland. dozens of oakland unified schoo district teachers will not be i class tomorrow. they will be doing something very different. after a week at the bargaining table over contracts with the district, teachers have decided within the past few hours they are going on strike. here is why. teachers want limits on class sizes, more counselors an support staff. the most contentious issue is pay. teachers want an increase acros the board. the district is countering with increases between 10% and 22%. some say they support the teachers but that they have to rush to make other plans.

>> i would have to look for som other form ofchild care. the teachers don't want to do this, but they are being forced into it. >> the district says schools will be open tomorrow but will not be school as usual. centra office staff will be sent to schools to supervise the kids. they will still serve meals at school and students who do not show up at school will be marke with excused absences. ousd say they don't know how long the strike will last but the end of the school year is filled with milestone events and they want to make sure that regular classes start again as soon as possible. the oakland education association released a statemen saying that school administrators failed to appear and present a written proposal to the union. they went on to say that students had a plan to work through the night to reach an agreement if the other side showed up. the last time ousd

teachers went on strike was before the pandemic in 2019. i lasted a week with teachers and the district ultimately agreein on a pay raise, but almost 30 years ago in 1996, oakland teachers were on the picket lines for almost a month. one o the students at oakland high wh remembers that is somebody that we both know! >> i remember in 1996 when we didn't have enough substitute teachers, so they were putting security guards in each classroom to watch over the kids. they would also combine the classes. so there wasn't a whole lot of teaching or learning. it was more babysitting. that long strike i '96 was stressful for myself and a lot of students but it al turned out okay! i graduated tw years later from oakland high i 1998. these were photos taken for my graduation. >> she has not aged at all! oakland is dealing with legal sideshows that have turned

violent. people in atvs and dirt bikes took off and turned away. another video showed a man trying to stop a sideshow befor he was viciously beaten and stomped on by a group of people we are not showing that video here tonight. andrea nakano onc spoke to a man who was thinking about running for mayor of oakland but is now thinking about packing up and leaving. >> reporter: it is not just weekly sideshows that oaklander are concerned about. it is the shootings, robberies and theft and other crimes that rattle their sense of safety. one man we talked with said that it has gotten so bad that he might jus leave the city he loves. >> it is a war zone! it is scary. >> i have never seen it like this before. it is like the wild, wild west.

>> reporter: this is one of the sideshows captured. you can see an oakland police patrol car driving through the chaos of th sideshow. houston says this is exactly what is wrong with oakland today. >> there is no authority any longer. it is not like where i grew up. you would be scared of your next-door neighbor. you would be scared of police officers. now there is no fear they fly by them going 50 miles per hour in a 20 mile per hour zone where kids walk. we have t bring back some fear and respect. that is what we have t do. >> reporter: mayor sheng thao released a statement regarding the violence and sideshows. she said my office is currently working with the alameda county sheriff's office on a robust an comprehensive plan to implemen sting operations so that we can crackdown on illegal sideshows that continue to put our residents in harms way. houston fears that unless there are

a bay area woman suffering from a debilitating medical condition was at the lowest point in her life. she was so desperate she was ready to die but she ended up in the right place at the right time to meet the right people. kpix 5 producer molly mccray and i had the chance encounter that help to solving medical mystery. >> reporter: the golden gate bridge. many stopped to admire its beauty but some see the landmark in a much darker light four years ago, a bay area woma walked onto the bridge intendin to jump off the side. but what happened next is stunning. >> it is amazing. talk about perfect timing. >> reporter: meet debbie menzies and her husband robert. on that day, on that bridge, debbie was at the end of her rope. >> i just could not deal with : of uncontrolled seizures and a

persistent depression. as a child, doctors had diagnosed her with epilepsy but medications had little effect. several times per day she felt strange electrical sensations i her head. add to that decades o feeling deeply despondent. >> i have lived a life wonderin what is wrong with me? there is something else wrong with me. i is not just epilepsy. >> reporter: back on the bridge she was about to jump. >> i felt a tap on my shoulder. >> reporter: an alert bridge worker stopped her and called a ambulance. the ambulance brought debbie to zuckerberg general hospital where she was admitted. the team taking care of her was baffled by her seizures. they call the doctor on duty, dr. paul garcia. >> each individual seizure is kind of a puzzle. >> reporter: dr. garcia only goes to the hospital a few time a year. that weekend he happene

to be on call. >> she is a memorable person, s i remember her being very clear about the symptoms she was having. >> reporter: debbie said that when she had a seizure people described her as laughing and smiling. that caught the doctor's attention. he had a hunch. >> he asked me, have you ever had a brain mri? and i said, no >> reporter: garcia ordered an mri. the results? >> it was like i couldn't believe it! it shocked me! >> reporter: deep in debbie's brain, there was a growth about the size of a lemon seed. it wa on a critical part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which manages a lot, including parts of the nervous system and mood. >> anything that alters the circuitry of the hypothalamus i like throwing a wrench in one o the major control centers of th brain. >> reporter: the growth is called a hypothalamus hematoma. as for treatment? brain surgery. >> i said, sign me up!

night into early saturday where we are tracking the next round of showers moving in with another round of showers likely after that as we head into earl next week and let's check the rain chances over the next seve days. friday night and early saturday there is a second wave of showers and the next one is sunday night into monday. the forecast is dry out as we head through the middle of next week and that is when temperatures return to normal. tonight temperatures not only dropping down from where we are now, upper 40s to around 50, but highs are once again way below average. mid-to-upper 50s for san francisco and along the coast, lonely to mid-60s along the coast. temperatures will remain well above normal with the rain pattern into next week then by tuesday and wednesday that is when temperatures retur to closer to normal levels. eve by wednesday of next week we ar still at least slightly below average. the warmest spots in the east bay will only be in th
