the proud boys guilty for their roles in plotting a january 6th attack on the capitol. group leader enrique tarrio and three other men were found guilty of seditious conspiracy and other crimes in an attempt to stop the transfer of power and keep then-president donald trump in office. so jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, you were talking about seditious conspiracy, th is working together to overthrow or destroy by force the government of the united states. prosecutors turned the proud boys' words against them to reach conviction there, even though one wasn't even in d.c. on january 6th. four members of the far-right proud boys were found guilty of seditious conspiracy and other felonies, ending one of the largest and longest trials connected to the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. >> the justice department will do everything in its power to defend the american people and american democracy. >> reporter: a fifth defendant,

dominic pazolla, was found not guilty of seditious conspiracy, though he was convicted of other serious charges. federal prosecutors argued the defendants plotted to unlawfully use force and the crowds to keep former president trump in office. although the group's ex-leader, enrique tarrio, was not in d.c. on january 6th, prosecutors allege that he was involved in planning ahead of the attack and pointed to a message he sent during the riot saying, quote, make no mistake, we did this. >> the jury has spoken, and that's our system of justice. very disappointed in the verdict. >> reporter: defense attorneys argue that it was former president trump, not their clients, who was to blame for the violence. they're planning to appeal the convictions. now that seditious conspiracy count comes with a maximum of 20 years in prison. some believe the verdict could also empower federal prosecutors to bring charges against other key figures accused of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election, so a lot to still watch out for here. >> definitely.

jarred hill in new york, thank you. a 21-year-old man who was a student at the university of california davis until last week has now been charged in connection with a string of deadly stabbings near campus. this video shows police detaining the suspect -- his name is carlos domingez -- near a park where a 20-year-old student was killed on saturday. dominguez is facing two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide. police say he had a large knife on him when he was detained. a homeless man and a u.c. davis student were killed. another homeless woman is recovering. police said it's unclear if the suspect knew the victims. three women and a suspected gunman are dead after a series of shootings in south georgia. authorities say a 26-year-old mcdonald's employee was seen on security video fatally shooting the store manager yesterday after asking her to come to the door. tey say the video then shows him stepping inside and taking his own life. he's also suspected of killing his grandmother and mother at

their nearby homes earlier in the day. and there are growing calls in new yorty -- for charges to be filed in the death of a man who was placed in a choke hold on a subway car. dozens protested last night at the barclays center demanding an arrest. the manhattan d.a. said that he's investigating after the medical examiner ruled it a homicide. lilia luciano has more. >> reporter: this shocking video shows 30-year-old jordan neely in a choke hold with three new york city subway riders holding him down for several minutes. witnesses say neely was acting erratically and making verbal threats when a 24-year-old marine veteran stepped in and held neely in a choke hold. he doesn't let go until his body goes limp. former manhattan assistant d.a. michael bachner -- can someone see something erratic and hold them in a choke hold?

>> under new york state law the person can only use the level of force reasonably necessary to stop the conduct. >> reporter: he says a self-defense claim may not be as simple for a trained marine. >> a marine knows how to subdue somebody without choking them out. they're taught battle technique. [ chants ] >> reporter: neely's death has sparked outrage and protests including from officials like new york congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez who posted this tweet saying neely was murdered, mayor adams pushed back. >> i don't think that's responsible at the time where we're still investigating the situation. >> we grew up together in foster care -- >> reporter: larry smith says he remembers his friend as a talented michael jackson impersonator who battled homelessness and the tra his mother's murder when he was a teen. >> jordan did not deserve this. he did not deserve to get choked out in america. his mental health came from autism, it came from depression, it came from sadness. but it really came from abandonment. >> that was lilia luciano reporting.

there are more ethics questions involving supreme court justice clarence thomas. propublica reports billionaire republican donor harlan crow paid thousands of dollars in private boarding school tuition for thomas' great nephew more than a decade ago. thomas and his wife have had legal custody of that relative since he was 6 years old. the payments were never reported as gifts, as some legal experts contend was required by law. it was previously reported that crow paid for thomas' luxury vacations and bought his mother's home which were also not disclosed. "propublica" said thomas did not respond to questions. and we are just one day away from the first coronation in the uk since 1953. king charles will be officially crowned. at 74, he'll be the oldest monarch to ever take the throne. of course, the preparations have been under way for some time now. today the final touches will be done to make sure the ceremony goes off without a hitch.

ian lee joins me from london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. london is decked out with flags, thousands of people will be taking part in tomorrow's coronation with the eyes of the world watching. there is no room for error. ♪ royal rehearsals have been running around the clock for the dawn of a new era in britain when king charles is crowned on saturday. ♪ practice makes perfect for the more than 6,000 troops taking part in the royal procession. the coronation is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of well wishers to london. >> god save the king. >> reporter: many have been camping out. if you could say anything to the king, what would you like to say? >> i would like to say thank you for what you've done up 'til now, and good luck. >> reporter: king charles will be the 40th monarch crowned at westminster abbey, a tradition

dating back to william the conqueror in 1066. >> i admire that they've kept their history, and everybody still respects it. >> reporter: the 74-year-old will be crowned alongside his wife, camilla, the queen consort, in front of roughly 2,000 guests. a much smaller ceremony than his mother's coronation in 1953. ♪ students from the king's former elementary school are already celebrating. king charles was the first monarch to be educated outside the palace. >> it's just so fun to think the king went to our school. like he's worn our uniform. ♪ >> reporter: on coronation day, he'll be wearing a new uniform and crown, along with the weight of a nation and future of the monarchy. this will be the first time the royal family will be together here at westminster abbey since the funeral of queen elizabeth last september.

investigation into alleged workplace discrimination, and north carolina lawmakers push through tighter abortion rules. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the charlotte observer" reports the republican-led north carolina legislature passed a ban on nearly all abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy. the measure has drawn protests at the state capitol this week. democratic governor roy cooper has said that he will veto the bill, but republicans have enough votes to override a veto. the bill which could go into effect in july lowers the state's current 20-week abortion ban with limited exceptions. the "associated press" says prosecutors in new york and california are investigating alleged workplace discrimination at the nfl. the attorneys general of both states cited accusations from employees of sexual harassment, racial discrimination, age bias, and a hostile work environment. they said they've issued subpoenas to nfl executives in the investigation involving the

league's corporate offices. the nfl says the allegations are inconsistent with its values and practices. and "the new york times" reports president biden is expected to nominate the air force chief of staff to the nation's top military post. if general charles q. brown jr. is nominated and then approved by the senate, he would succeed general mark milley as the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. brown would become just the second black man to hold that post. still to come, ed sheeran is speaking out loud. hear what the grammy-winning singer had to say about his legal victory and why he's still angry.
