1:39 am
>> this spill was first reported yesterday at the amtrak station downtown. the source seems to be a garbage can outside the station. officials say they detected much of the mercury inside it, but they say maintenance crews dumped out the garbage can into the back of a pickup truck, and that probably spread the mercury across multiple streets. because of that the amtrak station is closed until further notice and you should stay away from some streets near the station and the parking lot. that includes marina vista avenue, alhambra avenue, buckley street. this is video of crews working very hard to clean up that spill yesterday. the epa has been out there, too. it was initially reported that a pound to 1.5 pounds of mercury spilled but health officials are still trying to put an exact number on it. >> based off the official account and seeing pictures and photos of the amount of mercury that was in the gutters and on streets, it was significant.
1:40 am
>> the most pressing question is, how did the mercury get into the trash can to begin with? we still don't know. health officials are looking into it as we speak. they have not heard of anybody getting sick from this, but they said if you are concerned that you are there and your shoes or clothes touched that mercury, that you should double back those things and call the county hazmat team. do not try and wash your clothes and shoes yourself. now to the fentanyl crisis which kills more people in california than homicides or car crashes. today santa clara university unveiled their first solution to protect students from overdoses. an on-campus vending machine that distributes narcan. lawmakers have been grappling with how to solve this crisis, but a bill putting narcan in bars, gas stations and libraries is getting bipartisan support. the fentanyl crisis is personal

after the death of a student almost three years ago. in may 2020, charlie bought a pill on snapchat but he thought was percocet. it turns out it was laced with fentanyl and he died at his room in an on-campus dorm. tonight his father told shawn chitnis that the on-campus vending machine is just the first step. >> it was a connector. his death really rocked the campus and opened a lot of eyes. >> reporter: 22-year-old charlie was continuing a family tradition of studying a santa clara. he was not suffering from any substance abuse issues at this time, but his father said that the decision charlie made one day to try and get a painkiller online would change their lives forever. >> he was told it was percocet. he had been described in the past and he knew the what that would do to him.
1:42 am
>> reporter: like so manyteens under stress or looking for an escape, he thought the pill would be just what he needed at the time. >> it turned out to be a counterfeit emma so he lost his wife. >> reporter: the rise in deaths requires new ways to take on fentanyl poisoning, especially among college students. >> we want to increase accessibility by eliminating and reducing the barriers to this medication. >> reporter: santa clara university now has a vending machine dispensing free nasal spray kits, one of the first in the state heard >> we want something that helps the safety of our students. >> reporter: he and his wife started a nonprofit to improve awareness of fentanyl poisoning. they want to see more programs like this to increase access to life-saving medication. naloxone is commonly available as narcan. >> i think people should think about narcan as a fire extinguisher under the sink or
1:43 am
>> reporter: education and training are also crucial. enough people need to have access to the locks own and know how to use it. at the same time, teens and adults need to realize that fake pills will never give them what they are looking for. >> what you are looking for, you are not going to find it. if you need medication you need to go to your doctor and to a licensed pharmacy. >> reporter: only in the second year, this campaign of awareness is growing out of a necessity to save someone else's child. >> our lives will never be the same, and that is why we are so passionate about trying to stop the tragedy that our family experienced from happening to others. >> reporter: mother's day weekend will mark three years since charlie's death.

there are more calls tonight for the district attorney to release video in the banko brown case. the board of supervisors released a statement calling on jenkins to do just that. >> we need justice! we don't just need the tape! we don't need just the tape! >> this is just as important as the catch-up case. my people are important. my people are important. >> reporter: jenkins initially said that charges would not be filed against the security guard but later said the charges could still be filed and that the case was still open. some view jenkins' comments as an about-face. tonight the board of supervisors is calling on
1:45 am
walgreens to release video it has and pointed out it has the power to subpoena walgreens to get it. one supervisor wants new limits on when security guards can draw guns. steve preston is introducing legislation that will stop security guards from pulling their guns just to protect property. they would still be able to pull their guns of somebody posed a threat to safety. >> i would really reject the idea that businesses cannot survive unless security guards are empowered to shoot people's for shoplifting. that is a very extremist position and i don't think that it bears any reality. >> preston says he is working with the city attorney to draft the language. it all comes down to game five for the dubs tomorrow. the game against the lakers at chase is an elimination game. all important. let's bring in vern glenn.
1:46 am
you know, i guess a little bit of reaction from both sides who will say we got this, we are at home, and some people are just nervous and their stomach is in knots. >> this time tomorrow you will be talking to andrea nakano who will be talking about this game, and you will talk about a game six on friday in los angeles or it's over, rover! that last statement that i just said is the furthest thing from my mind, because we have seen this movie before. this will be the third time under steve kerr that golden state has trailed in a series 3- 1. they overcame the deficit against the funder in that western conference finals. kurt says that the core is doing great things with the opportunity to do it again! >> these guys are competitors. they love the stuff. you can see the posters back here on the wall from all the championships. that is what it is about. they cannot wait to get back on the horse tomorrow.
1:47 am
>> all right, so vegas has the warriors favored. even the lakers know that wednesday night the warriors will make game five tough for them. we will see! >> my prediction is that not only will the lakers lose, and i say that as a longtime laker fan, but i think it will be a blowout. >> i'm not sure about a blowout, but i -- >> they have done it before in the series! >> i am expecting a solid performance by the warriors to get to a game six. win one and go to l.a. and win another. >> a blowout would continue the trend. we will see. >> you just want one point better than the other guys. the ousd teacher strike shows no signs of slowing down. while local parents say they should have a say between the district and teachers. she faced a health crisis

the oakld tehersstrike isfivete today and held mega rallies at four spots across the city. as the strike continues on it is getting tough for some parents to figure out what to do with their kids. as katie nielsen reports, there was only one student who spent the whole day at emerson elementary, and his mom is one of many parents who wants a seat at the bargaining table. >> not working is not an option for me. i am a single parent and the sole provider for our family. i have a business, so i don't get paid if i don't work. >> reporter: patricia johnson's son is a second grader at emerson elementary school. this was the first day she sent him back to school since the strike started. >> he said he had fun. he got to do science project and he made origami.
1:52 am
he played basketball. >> reporter: since the strike started on thursday, ousd has seen numbers fall below 5% each day, and now parents like patricia are asking for more transparency in the negotiations, as the stalemate looks like it will continue into a fifth day. >> we are hearing this he said she said, the district did this, the union did this. everybody says everybody is lying. so how can that be true unless everybody is lying? >> reporter: according to both the teachers and the unions, the pay raises not the sticking point. it is the other things, like reparations, housing families and using district resources to help ousd families get into low

income housing, demands that might be outside the scope of a school district. >> this is the only way to build racially just and safe schools that we have promised to our students. >> the only way to get parents to the negotiation table, the union said that it is on board with that but we have not yet heard back from district. former president donald trump sexually abused e jean carroll and will have to pay millions of dollars to her. the writer claimed that trump assaulted her and then defamed her by claiming it never happened. the jury found him sexual battery liable but did not find him guilty of rape. >> i say it with as much respect as i can, but she is not my type.

>> the former president said he will appeal the verdict. tonight, state senator dianne feinstein is back in washington, d.c. after being at her san francisco home battling shingles for months. during her absence, senator feinstein missed key votes and faced calls from her party to resign. her return was a major relief for democrats as she sits on the senate judiciary committee. without her, the senate majority was useless and the gop was able to stop key parts of the democratic agenda. during her leave she faced calls to resign from deep within her party. ro khanna has been vocal on his call for her to step down. he gave us a statement today saying that he is glad that senator feinstein is feeling better, but that california deserves a senator who will advance judicial nominees and her three month absence for their agenda. beautiful day outside! sunny, not too hot. you have been talking about

this warm-up coming and i feel like this is the first time in a long time that we are talking about truly warm weather. >> we had a tiny little stretch of warm temperatures in april couple weeks ago and it did not last very long. we got within about five to 10 degrees, but it was over quickly and then we were back into cooler temperatures for may. >> that feels like so long ago but it wasn't. >> recency bias is what we call that! it is still going to be cool again tomorrow but there is change right around the corner. just kind of a copy and paste forecast for tomorrow compared to today. we will start off with locally dense fog and will be on short and keep temperatures cool throughout the day. changes take over later in the week. little warm-up on thursday, normal warm-up on friday and temperatures will not peek until saturday. this goes into upper levels of the atmosphere and temperatures
1:56 am
are way above normal by the time the weekend rolls around. that is all in the future. right now it is cool out there. we are not seeing a lot of fog yet. temperatures, no variation to speak of. everybody is between 53 and 55 degrees as of 11:00 p.m. the fog is going to spread away from the coast and into some of the inland valleys by early tomorrow morning, but it will not last all that long. we should see it retreat from the coast by 8: 30, 9:00, and even along the coast the sun will break through as we head towards midday. also sunshine for the rest of the day, which is going to try to warm us up from the cooler start with temperatures beginning in the mid to upper 40s to around 50 degrees. heading out to the giants game as they finish up the series against the nationals, the matinee game starts at 12: 45. it is going to be cool and somewhat breezy. what we are going to see plenty of sunshine overhead throughout the game. temperatures reaching up to around 60 degrees by the time they are wrapping up withe te

the city. temperatures further inland will be in the upper 60s but everybody is still going to be several degrees below average for one more day. into the upper 50s on the coast, mid-60s on the peninsula with upper 60s in the santa clara valley and the very warmest spots getting up to around 70 degrees. low to mid 60s for oakland and the east bay and upper 60s north of the golden gate, where temperatures have a better chance inland of getting up to or above 70 degrees. in terms of that one up later this week, the real way to look at it is how far below or above normal we are. by saturday we are going to be mostly 10 to 15 degrees above what is average for the middle of may. some of the warmest spots reaching up to 20 degrees above normal. the temperature roller coaster this time around should be in the mid-70s in san francisco and 80 in oakland. a couple degrees cooler for mother's day but it looks like really nice weather for mom's

day. if you have outdoor stuff on the agenda i don't think mother nature is going to interfere. temperatures will reach the mid- to-upper 80s in the north bay and san jose with a gradual cooldown by monday and tuesday of next week. that is only a couple degrees above average, especially for inland parts of the bay area. along the coast your temperatures will experience a much more modest warm-up but even along the coast temperatures should hit mid-60s over the weekend. outdoor plans for saturday or sunday, full steam ahead. vern? everybody loves a feel-good story! i had in sports, the night that a giants top infield prospect will never forget! it is the tale of casey schmidt, coming up
