an entire industry that operates up-and-down the california coast is in jeopardy we have a look at the problem and a potential solution. earlier i met kenny choi to tal about something that could change the crabbing industry. s i am with none other than kenny choi at fisherman's wharf! we know that crab season was cut short again. >> this season was cut short an for the past year this season has started later and ended earlier. that is a problem for

these crab fishermen who rely o dungeness crab to make a living there is technology that is being tested that could address this problem. oceanographer bar chadwick is testing a device that could revive the strugglin crab industry. gps and acoustic technology triggered the releas of louise and rope . it could give fishermen a needed lift an prevent entangled whales. >> these units are now in use i multiple fisheries, both testin and in actual fishing. >> they spot the orange buoys that float to the surface. they haul in the lines quickly. this method of operation eliminates tens of thousands of feet of vertical lines sitting in the ocean for days that can entangled whales. rope only comes to the surface to retriev their loot. >> it is working perfectly.

>> reporter: crab pots are strung together with the lead rope being held on top. for the first time a testing permit allows the fleet to dump traps and harvest crab in the spring even as humpback whales migrate north to summer feeding grounds off the california coast. vertical lines won't be an issue. >> this release here when it is activated, it spins like that and releases the line. when the cam rotates, it slacks this lin which allows everything to emerge from the trap. >> i have been working with it for almost five years now. >> without the gear they are opening the fishery later and

then closing it earlier. >> reporter: catherine sees thi as a solution only if it is als required in the fall when whale have not migrated back south yet. >> it can be a really important time for the whales with climat change. the weather is not getting as cool as quickly in the fall. >> reporter: the fishermen need fall harvest to begin. the extr time setting up pop-ups during peak season would severely limi the catch. >> these guys are not very receptive to change. i think it is not possible. >> reporter: he thinks is not viable option for the fall but that it would extend the crabbing season into the spring and give it a boost. >> it is not a new way to do things, but a supplemental way

to get back some things that ar no longer there for you. it doe not make sense not to do it. >> reporter: for now, the new approach will bridge what has been a widening gap between marine advocates and fishermen, still trying to find a solution for all. >> how likely is that this technology could be used in man places? >> reporter: their concern is that they will not be able to reset the straps as quickly as they do now. it is going to tak a lot longer. bottom line, they will not make as much money. >> i wonder if it is a coincidence! you do a lot of stories on the water for us. i know that it has to do with som of your hobbies and your love for the ocean. >> you know that i love the ocean if it is a water story i am out there. i did a story about rip tides and got into my wet suit and went swimming with some san francisco firemen who were doing drills out there. bu this story, it resonates for a

lot of people in the bay area. there are crab fishermen who have been dealing with this issue for years, even decades. so this is a real example of a solution that is out there that could help this industry. we ar also seeing a lot more entanglements with these vertical lines over the years according to state officials, s it is a real problem. >> kenny choi, thank you so much! another location in downtow martinez has been contaminated with mercury just a few days after a spell was discovered at the amtrak station. the hazmat team clear that mercury near buckley street. they said they could not find evidence of mercury in the park itself that is not far from the amtrak station. contra costa health says the same garbage truck tha collected a contaminated trash can also serviced nearby the park. crews were at the station cleaning up and testing again today. the city said it expects

the cleanup to take one or two more days. paul is here talkin about the weather. it was cool today but we are already lookin ahead not only to the weekend, which we always do, but to the fact that it is going to warm up, right? yeah! in the middle of winter it seemed like it rained every weekend? this is, paying us back! let's take a look at what is happening out there. let's take a look at what you need to know as we get closer t the weekend. partly cloudy skie tonight. not seeing any of that in the background here as we look at downtown oakland. the camera is shaking around a little bit with a noticeable breeze. the warming trend begin tomorrow but it is baby steps towards a much bigger warm-up over the weekend. let's take a look at the magnitude of the

warming trend. inland parts of the east bay are going to have some of the warmest temperature as we head into the weekend. yo go from still below average tomorrow to a few degrees above average on friday to about 15 degrees above normal by the tim saturday rolls around. we will hang onto a lot of the warmth o sunday, then a gradual coasting down towards near average temperatures as we head towards the latter half of next week. s a sharp rise and then the slow slope down towards average temperatures gives us a little time to be used to the warmer weather. as the temperatures climb, so will the pollen count it is mulberry oak and grass pollen as the top allergens but there is plenty of other stuff in the air around the bay area making folks sniffle and sneeze temperature stands at 53 degree in san francisco. everybody is in the mid to low 50s. we are not seeing much fog just yet bu we will have some of it out there. it will be fairly widespread but not too dense .

it is not going to last as long as it did today. unobstructed visibility is 12.4 miles. that is what we will see by nine or 10:00 in the morning. temperatures tonight drop down into the mid-to-upper 40s to around 50 degrees. highs tomorrow are closer to what is normal for this time of year bu still a few degrees below average. 50s on the coast, low to mid 60s around the bay with temperatures further inland reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. some of the warmest spots far inland reaching into the mid-70s tomorrow afternoon. temperatures will continue the climb. again, it will be a modest increase around the bay but above 70 in san francisco and right at 70 on mother's day. temperatures are not goin to back down very far. it will still feel like into late sprin by monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week. just a little taste of summer time wit
