case. the writer accused trump of raping her in a dressing room at a manhattan department store in the 1990s. jurors found him liable of sexual abuse but trump was quick to dismiss the ruling. >> what kind of a woman meets somebody and brings him up and within minutes you're playing hanky panky in a dressing room? they said he didn't rape her. >> they did not -- >> i didn't do anything else because i have no idea who the hell she is. >> trump also took on the 2020 election results. he again falsely claimed that it was rigged several times during the town hall. the former president also said that he did everything in his power to keep congress members safe during the deadly insurrection. >> crazy nancy pelosi and the mayor of washington were in charge, as you know, of security. and they -- >> not in charge of the national guard. you're in charge of the national guard. >> well, i offered them national guard. i said, we'll give you soldiers, we'll give you national guard, we'll give you whatever you want, and they turned me down.

you believe republicans would face political peril in a general election, especially with women voters? >> i don't believe trump can be elected. and trump is the candidate that the democrats would prefer. and that is enhanced by the fact that you've got this jury verdict now that made this finding. >> robert costa, thank you. title 42, the trump-era pandemic order that's been used to turn back migrants at the southern border, ends today. it comes as the biden administration is rolling out new rules to restrict asylum seekers. jarred hill is in el paso, texas, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and there's no coincidence that those two things are happening at the same time. this is an effort by the biden administration to try and deter another wave of migrants from coming to the southern border as title 42 is set to expire. communities like this one here in el paso say they're already struggling to deal with the

people who are here, and there are so many others waiting on the other side hoping that this is the beginning of a new life for them. lines of asylum seekers grew along the southern border this week with title 42 set to expire tonight. th is jonaan gez fromen. hehared this video of his "we had to cross rivers filled with snakes and crocodiles," he says. but as people hope to enter the u.s., the biden administration has put in place new rules aimed at curbing the numbers. migrants are now required to prove they've applied for asylum on line or through another country first. violators face a five-year ban from the u.s. and a felony charge. >> our overall approach is to build lawful pathways for people to come to the united states and to impose tougher consequences on those who choose not to use those pathways. >> reporter: with people already sleeping on the streets, local officials here in el paso are preparing for this potential

increase in migrants with plans to use unoccupied schools as shelters. >> we have all our facilities ready to go based on what we see when we see it. >> reporter: texas governor greg abbott deployed hundreds of national guard troops in riot gear to brownsville where volunteers are also providing food and assistance to asylum seekers who have been released. >> we want their experience in the united states to be a good one where they feel comfortable, where they feel safe. >> reporter: the biden administration has announced plans to set up 100 processing centers in central and south america in hopes of shifting asylum seekers away from the border. now, those are not yet set up, so it's not an immediate fix to this situation. meanwhile, the aclu is already planning on appealing and challenging the new asylum rules from the biden administration. so again, this is really just the beginning of what could be a very long process on a number of different levels. >> jarred hill in el paso, texas.

thank you. embattled new york congressman george santos is standing firm as he faces fraud and money laundering charges. shortly after appearing in court yesterday, santos said the allegations against him are a, quote, witch hunt, and he will run for re-election. it appears he's losing key support. caitlin huey burns has the latest. >> reporter: chased by reporters and cameras outside a long island courtroom, george santos use the spotlight to launch his criminal defense. >> i'm going to fight the witch hunt. i'm going to clear my name. >> reporter: santos was released on bond after pleading not guilty to charges of fraud, money laundering, and making false statements in connection with his 2022 congressional campaign. >> i believe i'm innocent. >> reporter: in a 13-count indictment prosecutors detailed an alleged scheme by santos to solicit funds from donors who believed they were contributing to his campaign. instead, they say santos spent the money on personal expenses including luxury items like designer clothes and credit card

payments. they said santos lied about his income and his assets on these candidate disclosure forms. santos said those prosecutors is don't have all the evidence. what evidence do you have that they don't have? >> i have plenty of evidence that we will now be sharing with the government in this case to make sure that i can defend my innocence. >> reporter: prosecutors also accuse santos of falsely claiming thousands of dollars in pandemic unemployment benefits, while they say he was actually making six figures working at a florida-based investment firm. house speaker kevin mccarthy said santos is innocent until proven guilty. >> you have your day in court. >> i will not resign. >> reporter: santos said he would return to work in washington. are you planning on running for re-election? >> yes, i am. >> reporter: why should anybody believe you now? >> like i said, i will prove myself innocent, and we'll move from there. re-election is a very far time away. >> reporter: as part of his bail agreement, santos will have to

get approval by a judge if he wants to travel to campaign anywhere outside of new york. his next court appearance is scheduled for june 30th. caitlin huey burns, cbs news, long island. the central plains today bracing for a powerful storm packing hail, damaging winds, and a tornado threat. kansas is already reeling from this twister that touched down yesterday evening. tornado sirens were heard blaring. torrential rain also hit the area. it's unclear if anyone was hurt or if there was extensive damage. breaking overnight, fighting between israel and palestinian militants in gaza intensified. israel killed four militant commanders in air strikes. the israeli military said it hit more than 130 sites in what it called a targeted campaign against islamic jihad. at least 25 palestinians have been killed including civilians.

cop. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "chicago-sun times" reports tour teenagers were charged in the deadly shooting of a city police officer. 24-year-old ariana preston was killed last week while she was off duty and standing in her uniform in front of her house. the four teens ranging from 16 to 19 were charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. investigators say preston was killed while the teenagers were on a robbery spree. a vigil and balloon release were held tuesday to honor the slain officer. "the washington post" says a texas army sergeant was shot and killed. an armed black lives matter protester was sentenced to 25 years in prison. daniel perry was convicted last month of murdering garrett foster during a 2020 demonstration in austin. foster was legally carrying an ak-47 rifle during the demonstration. texas governor greg abbott said that he'd like to pardon perry under the state's "stand your ground" law, but a s b

would first have to recommend that. >> the texas governor made the decision to insert politics into this case. the board has committed to our office that we will be allowed to make a presentation, and they have committed to hear from the family of the victim in this case. >> during the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented racist texts and online posts from perry. and "usa today" reports on the rescue of an 8-year-old boy who was missing in a rugged michigan state park for two days. the boy was gathering wood while camping with his family saturday when he disappeared. more than 150 people searched for him. he survived by eating snow and taking shelter under a log with overnight temperatures in the 40s. the boy's tracks helped rescuers find him on monday. he was reported in good shape and reunited with his family. still to come, social security benefits, why recipients could see a much

inflation dropped below 5%. the dow last 30 points. the nasdaq gained 126, and the s&p 500 was up by 18 points. some new promising data on the cost of living in this country. the labor department says inflation slowed for a tenth straight month in april with consumer prices down 5% since march. the data signals inflation could be cooling with groceries and airline fares down. gas and rental prices rose, but at a slower pace. and if inflation continues to cool, older americans can expect a lower cost of living adjustment. new analysis by the senior citizens league now estimates that roughly 70 million people who rely on social security could get a 3.1% adjustment next year compared to 8.7% this year. and starting this week, starbucks will charge you an extra dollar to hold the water on a popular summer drink.
