hoping for asylum, how volunteers are helping them deal with difficult conditions and how the bay area is helping to prepare families. oakland police are welcoming a new class of officers, how the mayor said this is a step in the right direction for that challenged police department. and they are not done yet, the warriors are going to try to even the series against the lakers to avoid elimination. good afternoon everybody, i'm reed cowan. let's talk about that top story, huge waves of asylum-seekers are at the border, now that title 42 has expired. it's really tough for authorities to get the migrants the help that they need. anne makovec is changing the immigration system. >> the pandemic era restriction is no longer in place as of today, the u.s. patrol estimating 60,000 migrants are trying to enter, they are not going to lean on

migrants can be deported from the united states back to their home countries and be banned from coming back to the u.s. for 5 years, that is unless they express fear of returning and to pass the interview. meanwhile, u.s. lawmakers are still at odds . >> we provide lawful, safe and orderly pathways for people to come to the united states when they qualify for relief. >> this is an invasion and they want the numbers to go up. >> reporter: adding to the uncertainty, a federal judge has temporally blocked a policy of releasing migrants without giving them a notice to appear in court. that is in an effort to ease crowding. the biden administration is expected to seek an emergency stay on that ruling. a lot of migrants are awaiting their chance at asylum at the california mexico border in sandra sedro . there are tables set up outside with

boxes of fruit, medical supplies, diapers and other things . and volunteers have been showing up to help distribute food and water. we talked to people about the conditions they are living in while they wait. >> it is cold they want to come into this country as quickly as possible and we have heard this from many people who have been waiting here and we are waiting to find out when that might happen for a lot of these people as we keep an eye out to see if border patrol agents show up. we have not seen that this morning, we did here overnight a group of migrants were taken from this location by border agents to a different

location. we are not sure where. possibly being processed now, making their cases heard so they can seek asylum. but for so many people, these are horrible conditions, we just heard from this gentleman, it is cold at night. they are asking if anybody would like to donate, you can do so. things like blankets, jackets, sweaters, those are in critical need. just to provide some sort of comfort. >> the biden administration is stressing that this transition governor gavin newsom spoke about the end of title 42 today, he is seeing what is happening on the border, highlighting that our state only has nine shelters and three counties , the shelters are ready to provide testing and vaccinations and other support to the people on the other side of the fence. he talked about the financial challenge to maintain those services and he called on congress to take action on comprehensive immigration reform. >> we need more support, locals need more support, the constraints the biden administration is under are real. and we recognize that.

>> we also recognize that migrant families could eventually end up in the bay area, local groups are already making plans to help. jos÷ martinez has the story of one woman who herself is an immigrant and now she is helping out. >> reporter: san jose is preparing to receive an influx of immigrant families, a venezuelan immigrant who moved to the u.s. in 2017 is one of the leaders who will welcome these families to the bay area. >> gina says she identifies 100% with all these families who are immigrating, seeking a better life, opportunities and security, things they do not have in their countries. she works for an organization in east san jose that has already been helping an increasing number of new arrivals. other community leaders from the city of san jose, like the director of the program of racial

equity said this . >> we will activate various departments in the organization to ensure that our response is welcoming and inclusive and humane to the people that are seeking asylum in the u.s. >> reporter: they didn't specify details but confirmed they will follow the work of organizations . the group says they are currently helping 2 to 3 new families each day, they expect that number to go as high as 10 new families. >> we have been working to stabilize families and give them temporary shelter, use the limited resources that we do have two get temporary hotel stays , get food and water and medical enrollment coverage , getting children enrolled in schools and other types of

resources to get the family stabilized. >> we will be able to see the real impact of this change not now but within the next two weeks. he emphasizes the importance of this help right now to avoid situations where these migrants would have to camp in parks or on the streets. other stories aroundsethklhe in see th pickin allendale th elementary. the teachers union holds its ground when it comes to the so-called common good so, what are they? things like reparations for black students, using vacant property for housing and hoping to secure low income housing. they have made progress but it's going to take more time. >> a lot of it is recognizing that communities want a stay

cold, and we care about our students and this recognition that there needs to be more support for students. there has to be conceptual agreements. >> we know you have questions, we reached out to the district to see how they feel about the negotiations but so far no response. and we know who is going to take the helm of twitter as the new ceo, the longtime media executive, linda yaccarino. after 11 years as chairman of global advertising and partnerships, she's going to start her job at twitter in six weeks. elon musk is going to transition to the role of executive chair of chief technology officer. >>the ioan do or die situation, this time they are in los angeles trying to stay alive against the lakers. we know a lot of you are cheering for them right now, and we know we can find you at thrive city, hoping they can force game seven here at home. we know it's not going

to be easy but it is possible. >> it is possible but definitely not easy, especially if andrew wiggins cannot go, he is expected to be a gametime decision with that rib cage fracture he suffered in game five. the plan is for him to go through pregame warm-ups to see if you will be able to play. wiggins scored 25 points on wednesday night and he said it was his best game since he returned after being away from the team for dealing with a family matter. for golden state to extend their season, they have to extend their nba record streak of winning a road game in 28 consecutive playoff series. the warriors only won 11 times on the road this year but steve kerr is confident those issues are behind them. >> what you saw three months ago is nothing like what you are watching right now. we came out in game four and controlled the game at staples center, we showed the poise

that's the sound of celebration in oakland, the latest class of police officers graduating from the academy today, taking pictures and picking up their diplomas. they enter a force in turmoil as oakland continues to search for a new police chief. they are battling shortages. however, the mayor said this is just the beginning of her effort to get the numbers back up. listen? >> we are moving forward with more police academies, so if it targets the right number and we

are looking at attrition rates, we are going to have more officers in 2024 than we do today, and i'm not talking about funded positions, i'm talking about actual police officers who are walking the beach. they are very different. >> she is still waiting on candidate recommendations for a new police chief to come from the police commission. as for today, a total of 18 new officers graduated. san jose is the strongest region in the entire country for hiring new college grads. the report found that monthly employment in san jose has grown on average, of nearly 10% over the past year. >> the fact that we have created more opportunities than any other city in the united states for those young grads, it's just a testament to the innovative economy that we have here. we are offering the next generation of innovators the very best opportunities to succeed. and they are taking them. >> that is the mayor celebrating but, the overall market is still showing signs of weakness and we understand

job growth is expected to slow down this month, so we will be tracking that for you. even though san jose is the only region in the country that pays six figures as a starting salary, when you factor in the cost of living here, it is more like $57,000. we checked in with college seniors to see how they are getting ready to start work. >> christine is like many local college seniors who are from the bay area and want to stay here. even though the job market is getting tougher and the cost of living is getting higher. >> i'm nervous, scared, i'm worried about what i'm going to do right after college. am i even going to be able to get the job? >> she is making sure to apply for a certain number of jobs each week and spent a couple hours per day looking at companies and openings, with major corporations announcing layoffs all year, students are stressed about what will be possible this summer. >> everyone here , we are all friends, we went to college together and now that we are searching for jobs, obviously

there is a little bit of tension and somebody gets a job and somebody doesn't. >> the search has to start early these days, and for this computer science engineering major, trying to break into the tech industry can be tricky right now. >> as these last couple weeks of graduation are wrapping up, i get the sense that the college experience is finally finishing. >> he considers himself lucky because he found an internship with a smaller company that just got bought out by a tech giant, giving him a solid first job opportunity after graduation. >> an important part of any job search is being hungry enough to secure your future. >> it's that type of nontraditional approach that will be key for the class of 2023 to find what they want in the current job market. >> even if there are headlines around economic uncertainty,

there's still a lot of opportunities. >> gusto released new data based on the hiring trends around 300,000 companies. >> they might have to look harder but there are still a ton of positions out there. >> dean, that means looking outside of the bay area and pushing herself a little bit harder than the past. >> how are you going to stand out compared to everybody else? >> while new unemplme released department show it reaching the lowest levels in decades, the uncertainty this year may push employers to shy away from a younger and less experienced workers. >> let's go deeper, the most recent numbers show that unemployment among the new grad age range is about 20 to 24 and that is at the higher level of the overall population, however it is still below 6%.

this time, the numbers shake us a little bit, an earthquake struck plumas county this morning. and today, we are getting a better look at the damage from that 5.5 earthquake. we haven't seen any reports of injuries but some good damage at a resort. some people did get that notification just moments before it struck. >> and we are able to very precisely know when and how the earthquake is going to strike and specifically where the epicenter is. >> 's early warning systems are already being integrated into buildings, hospitals, even elevat la ti countywas rockedan rtke thissi waupthe sy in upper levels of the atmosphere

is squishing the marine layer, it is still there as we look from the west , but it is much more compact. it's not going to spread nearly as far inland as we head through tonight and early saturday morning. they're still going to be some fog along the coast and around the bay. the peak of the warm temperatures is going to occur tomorrow, and it'll gradually coast downward. still warm for mother's day, a slow return to near normal temperatures through next week. let's take a look from a different perspective, san jose right now, not bad in the santa clara valley, 73 degrees. temperatures are little bit warmer in the north bay and in the east bay, upper 70s and low 80s. close to normal, mid 60s in oakland, those numbers will creep up just a little bit more through the rest of the afternoon and into this evening. clear skies overhead right now and it should remain sunny, the fog is going to hold off for the watch party

happening as the warriors are in los angeles to take on the lakers and hopefully come back for game seven in a couple of days. temperatures in the low 60s nd6:. around 60 degrees for tipoff at 7:00. if you're going to be on the other side of the bay for the other game, the texas rangers, temperatures are going to coast into the upper 50s by the end of the day. the fog is going to be out there, the futurecast shows it is not making that big push into the valleys to begin the day tomorrow and what fog there is should dissipate quickly. and the coast should be breaking up as we head towards lunch time. temperatures dropping down to the low to mid 50s, close to normal this time of year, just a couple degrees warmer than the past couple of mornings. the high temperatures tomorrow going to be substantially above what is normal for this time of year, mostly 10 to 15 degrees above average but we are not going to set any records. here are the forecasted highs for

tomorrow. nowhere close in san francisco, oakland, and substantially below record territory in santa rosa, and six degrees below the record on saturday. that gradual cooldown is going to send us back to near average high temperatures by thursday and friday of next week. it's going to be sunny and pleasant for mother's day on sunday, get out and enjoy it. the north bay should see a cooldown for the second half of the weekend, everybody else is going to be more of a gradual return to normal temperatures. on the warm side but pleasant through the weekend and into the first half of next week. even when we cooldown, it's more like normal for the middle of may. speaking of the middle of may, graduation ceremonies, they are not known for being fast affairs, why this college president agreed
