they are teaching, they are training tomorrow, today. but it can't be on the backs of our kids. >> now at 11:00, an oakland mom desperate to end the teacher strike but time is running out. why she says the students are the ones being hurt. and a disappointing end to the dubs championship dreams. could this be the end of a dynasty as we know it? from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i'm sara donchey, happy friday. okay, think back on when you were in school, even if you don't remember much, you probably remember how that final week felt. yes, there were exams, but there
2:07 am
were also graduations and celebrations, excitement for the summer. thousands of students in oakland could miss all of that. the teacher strike dragged into its seventh day today. the state superintendent has been involved in negotiations and told us today he is seeing signs of movement. but as of now, there are no plans for teachers to return to classrooms. tonight one oakland mom wants her kid and every other back in class. she says it is urgent, so she's taken matters into her own hands to start a movement of her own. kenny choi spent the day with her in oakland. >> reporter: so that happens every day? >> all the time. >> reporter: illegal sideshows in deep east oakland bother kita brown, but it's the noise of a teacher strike and an eerie silence on school grounds that's keeping her up at night. she's calling families, driving from school to school, gauging
2:08 am
how working parents and students are dealing with learning loss. >> you don't feel that there's anything that you're losing based on the fact that it's happening right now. >> reporter: high school senior amy martinez fully supports the teachers union strike. >> their job is a hard job, and they need to be shown the same respect as other careers. >> they are teaching. they are training tomorrow, today. but it can't be on the backs of our kids. >> reporter: after attending school on monday, brown's sixth grade daughter has been home all week, uncomfortable crossing the picket line, even though she wants raises for teachers. >> right now, these kids are being used as pawns. >> reporter: brown works for the oakland reach, a parent-run organization advocating for better public schools. she wants parents to send children to school during the strike, even if there's no instruction happening, believing strength in numbers makes it easier for kids to go back and end the
2:09 am
strike sooner. >> i don't know what you going to do, you guys need to figure out a way to work it out, but my baby needs to be at school every day as long as it's open. >> reporter: she says most black and brown parents she talks to believe a few missed days won't hurt in the long run, especially young children. brown couldn't disagree more. >> our kids need to get every last bit of ounce and dosage of instruction that they can. and they need it right now. >> reporter: her mission is to establish a different attitude within the community for whenever the next strike looms. >> and until we start pushing against it and enforcing and saying you know what, i'm not going to do status quo, i'm not going to be okay with just sitting out and waiting for this to happen, then it's going to continue. >> reporter: students, teachers, and parents are torn over a shortened school year leaving some drifting in the
2:10 am
wind. >> well, tonight for a different perspective we also talked to a teacher librarian at franklin elementary who is on the bargaining team. she also said there has been progress and they are cautiously optimistic about reaching a deal. >> we are doing it every single day with our students at the forefront of our minds. and so, you know, as we are starting to get closer to reaching an agreement there's nothing that we want more, really, than to reach a fair settlement and to be back in our classrooms with our students. >> so the big sticking point between the teachers union and the district seems to be this list of common good demands from the union. those don't have anything to do with teacher pay, and here's what the union is asking for. reparations for black students using district property for homeless family housing, subsidized student transportation, and increased mental health support, among other things. the district claims those demands will cost
2:11 am
$1 billion. to be fair, they have not shown us a cost breakdown for that. now, that same elementary teacher told us these demands reflect the scope of work that oakland teachers do, that their jobs go way beyond just instruction. >> we wear so many hats. we have a lot of students that are in need, connecting them to social services. we file paperwork to make sure our students are getting counseling. >> today the district asked the strike be settled before the first graduation ceremony in ten days. we are, of course, keeping our eye on this through the weekend as negotiations press on. we will have the very latest on the strike on our website, kpix.com. pretty clear there was a lot of love between those two teams with how they reacted after the end of the game. it was a roller coaster of a series, though, for the golden state warriors, and tonight
2:12 am
proved to be a heartbreaking toenld the dubs championship quest. the lakers eliminated the warriors. andrea nakano here with more on what went wrong in game six. >> a lot of things went wrong in game six. the warriors knew they were in for a fight tonight to try to bring the series back to chase center for game seven. now the dubs, unfortunately, picked the wrong night to have a bad shooting performance, one of the worst in the thod to go with his head injury, so was andrew wiggins, who hurt his ribs on wednesday. end of the first half, this sums up the night for the warriors. down seven, clay thompson air balls. dante gets blocked and austin reese fires from half-court. he beats the buzzer, and the lakers up by ten at the half. third quarter lebron james took over the game. pass is up, shot drives and lobs it up for ad, who slams it home. davis finished with 17 points and 20 rebounds, double-double for

2:14 am
since 2014. and yet, you know, we had a chance to make another run. so it's never as bad as it seems. it's never as good as it seems. >> so steph ended up with 32 points, but those points didn't come easy at all. curry and klay thompson don't get it done, especially not in an elimination game. tough night for the warriors. we'll see what happens during the off-season. >> yeah, i mean, that's not the way you want to go out, but still. they had some incredible moments in the series and throughout the regular season. so -- >> yeah, and some didn't even expect them to make the postseason, so not too bad. >> we'll talk more about that later. it was, though, a star studded crowd at crypto.com arena. elon musk was there. migos rapper quavo came to the game in los angeles. music super star and my personal favorite performer ever, bad

bunny was there with his rumored girlfriend kendall jenner. her sister was there too, kim kardashian, perhaps you have heard of her. and raising fans will love this, including my producer sophie, who is a huge fan, lewis hamilton also in the crowd. none of that is any consolation for loyal dubs fans who showed up tonight here in the city to cheer on their team. they were hopeful. betty yu is at thrive city with warriors fans who did not get the ending that they wanted. >> reporter: it was a crushing end to the season tonight for fans who came out to thrive city hoping to see a victory on the big screen. with more than five minutes on the clock and the lakers up by about 20 points, we saw a lot of long faces and fans unable to stomach the impending 122-101 loss. >> i ain't sad, i'm just upset. we didn't show up. >> reporter: san francisco resident trey can non took in the action with his cousins and aunt. it's a tradition for the

family during the playoffs. what was it like to watch this game? it was pretty quiet out here. >> yeah, it was kind of heartbreaking. like this is a tough thing to watch right now. because we had momentum going in. >> reporter: as the lead got wider, the crowd at thrive city got quieter. >> i mean, i think seeing everyone upset gives me a little bit of joy, unfortunately. i hate to be that guy, but sometimes you got to be that guy. >> reporter: celebrating quietly? >> for now. >> reporter: dub nation was hoping for that warriors magic late in the game, but ultimately the team didn't emerge in champion form friday. >> normally when draymond rushes back on defense, that's a pretty good sign that we're going to do well, but we haven't seen a lot of the good precursors that say, hey, the warriors are probably going to win today. >> reporter: as far as all that talk about the dynasty ending -- >> don't ever count the warriors out there. >> reporter: what are you going to do to make yourselves feel better? >> that's a good question. >> get ready for football,

let's go niners. >> reporter: some fans tried to dance out their feelings, even do some warrior chants after the game, but it wasn't much consolation after that ugly loss. go niners, that one was funny. all right, one important clue at an illegal sideshow on the bay bridge turned into this, a huge find for police. how it led them to a stockpile of stolen goods. and move over north beach and the marina, why people in chinatown are pushing the historic neighborhood as a great place to visit once the sun goes down. the fog is rolling back in around downtown san francisco. temperatures today, though, did manage to warm up into the 70s and 80s inland and made it up to near average temperatures in the city. a warmer day in store on saturday, we'll see if we can keep it going on mother's day. and a robot space snake. sounds entirely made up, but it is real, and nasa is behind it.
2:19 am
illegal sideshows have stopped traffic entirely on the bay bridge multiple times in just the past few months. this one happened in february, and you can see it was quite a scene. but police say all of that led to a big stolen goods bust. in march, officers were responding to another illegal sideshow when they saw a car that they think had been involved in that same bay bridge sideshow. it is distinct, as you can see. they impounded that car and found it had stolen parts inside. police say they found stolen parts inside of the car and
2:20 am
investigated as a result of that. they got a warrant, and this week police searched the owner's home. they didn't just find stolen car parts, though, they found $20,000 worth of stolen merchandise and arrested a 37-year-old oakland man. people in san francisco's chinatown were treated to something special tonight. l.e.d. dragons dancing through the streets. tonight the chinatown merchants association held a block party they hope will cast their neighborhood in a new light. this is the first chinatown nightlife event of its kind. chinatown has been celebrated as a popular spot to eat and shop during the day, but they're hoping to attract more at night. a spokesperson said these events are important to attract locals and visitors back to chinatown, as many business owners have struggled in the wake of the pandemic.
2:21 am
>> i'm so excited about the initial excitement that we've been receiving from the community and from san francisco, even people from florida have been like, hey, it looks like chinatown's really happening right now, should i book a plane ticket. i'm like, yeah, come on down. diversity is what is going to draw people back to the city. >> tonight's event also served another purpose. it was raising money for more lanterns for chinatown. merchants hope they will make it a brighter and safer place to be at night. let me see your clap your hands. >> not too far away from chinatown, a big turnout for a party on battery street. the goal was to transform it into a night marketplace with dancing. people packed three blocks. they got cocktails and street food and there were a lot of local vendors. >> so this is how we feed our kids, man. not only that, but you're feeding into somebody's dream. a lot of times people say i want to go ahead and
2:22 am
create my own food truck. i want to create my own brand. and the fact that people come and support us, it gives us motivation to keep it going. >> this was a joint effort between san francisco and the nonprofit livable city. and if you missed this one, don't worry, there are three events planned for this year. all of them on fridays. i can tell you, and paul can tell you, from personal experience at night that part of battery is generally pretty quiet. >> very quiet. >> it's the financial district, bustling during the day, 6:00, crickets. >> this is not the financial district of years ago. it's much quieter. i walked through it. there was a lot of stuff going on. i saw the bar from a distance and thought so close but so far away because i had to come back here. >> i saw it on the way to the gym. what's going on, i'm going to go exerse. ev u've fo the weekend, the weather looks cooperative, other than the fog
2:23 am
that's out right now. that'll dissipate. we warm up significantly tomorrow. offshore winds disperse that fog quickly and help to push the marine influence a little farther off the coast. we don't lose it entirely. it's still cooler by the water, but everyone's temperature should be above normal tomorrow. the heat dome sending our temperatures to way above average farther inland is going to crack a bit on sunday. so a drop in temperatures from saturday to sunday but it's still going to be a warmer than average day across almost the entire bay area. the exception might be right along the coast. take a look at the temperature trend for concord as an example. some of the hottest spots inland and the east bay . so at worst over the next ten days we're just going to see a gradual return to close to normal temperatures. as the erclb, dothe pollen unto st thbutoward e ghend of the medium category over the weekend and then into the

along the coast. above normal, it counts. mostly 70s around the bay with 80s down the peninsula. a mix of upper 80s and low 90s inland. some of the warmer spots in the mid-90s tomorrow. temperatures are going to back down gradually as we head through next week, but only down to what's normal this time of year. that means mid-60s by thursday and friday in san francisco. around 70 for oakland. the warmest temperature this is weekend, of course, will be inland, but there's that drop from sunday to monday. it does look nice for mother's day. should see plenty of sunshine, and once we see that return to normal temperatures, it's a mix of 70s and low 80s farther inland. along the coast, enjoy your day in the mid-60s tomorrow. we start cooling off on mother's day, and it's back down to around 60 degrees with plenty of fog going back and forth each day as we head through next week. andrea? ov is next for e du. foures for three, but head coach steve kerr admitting this wasn't a championship team. so will this be the end of the dynasty? hear

okay, that's not, obviously, the way the warriors wanted to lose. they wanted to win, to be clear. but a lot of people, i think myself included, were wondering is this the last time we're going to see this warriors team together. >> yeah a lot of people are wondering that. we kind of listened to some of the interviews after the game, and it is a disappointing loss for the warrior in los angeles. the
2:28 am
question is what happens next. it was an uncharacteristic shooting night for the warriors, especially in an elimination game. despite 32 points from steph curry, the warriors shot just 27% from beyond the arc. clay thompson didn't live up to his game six nickname, shooting 2 of 12 from deep. golden state isn't ready to say good-bye to the dynasty. >> draymond, klay, steph, our core guys, they've got plenty left off. you know, there's still plenty in the tank there. >> we're not done yet, you know. lost this year, we'll be back next year. >> i still feel like this team has championship potential, but the organization has some decisions to make and we'll, you know, we'll eventually get to that point. >> should be an interesting off-season. now to the gi aying his first game against his former team. bottom of the
