possible deal with republicans to avert a potentially catastrophic default on the national debt. after a meeting yesterday, house speaker kevin mccarthy said that there could be an agreement by the end of the week. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hey, anne-marie. president biden and speaker mccarthy were definitely more optimistic after yesterday's debt ceiling meeting compared to the last one. the two sides acknowledge they still have a lot of work to do before reaching a deal to avoid default. progress in washington after yet another white house sit-down on the debt ceiling. >> what changed in this meeting was the president has now selected two people from his administration to directly negotiate with us. >> reporter: still no deal on raising the nation's borrowing limit with the treasury saying an enomic anfina5 days before de caro >> reporter: businesses like old

mccarthy sayat he thinks a deal is possible by the end of . and even though president biden isn't due back in the u.s. until this weekend, he said that he plans to speak with congressional leaders regularly and that their staffs could meet daily. the clock, though, is ticking, and there's not a lot of time left. >> there is not. but finally a bit of good news. jarred hill in new york, thank you. breaking overnight, a 12-week ban on most abortions will become law in north carolina. >> the house has overridden the governor's veto, and the bill becomes law notwithstanding the governor's objections. shall be notified. >> the republican-controlled general assembly voted to override democratic governor roy cooper's veto of the ban after 12 weeks of pregnancy. north carolina had banned nearly all abortions after 20 weeks. the secret service is launching an investigation after an intrusion at the home of one of president biden's top aides.

an unidentified man entered national security adviser jake sullivan's home while agents were on duty last month. catherine herridge reports. >> reporter: news of a major security breach that could have put national security adviser jake sullivan, one of president biden's most senior advisers, at risk. first reported by "the washington post" and confirmed by cbs news, an unknown intruder breached sullivan's washington home two weeks ago, around 3:00 a.m. while sullivan's home has a robust security system, the intruder, apparently intoxicated, went undetected by at least two secret service agents outside. the source said sullivan confronted the intruder instructing him to leave. there was no sign of forced entry. >> this should not happen, especially where there are hostile nation states targeting u.s. officials on u.s. soil. >> reporter: the security lapse comes after john bolton, the trump administration's national security adviser, was threatened by the iranians last summer.

the plot disrupted by the fbi. that it was potentially an effort either to kidnap me or assassinate me. >> reporter: investigators are scouring grainy video that may show the intruder outside sullivan's home who remains at large. a law enforcement source tells cbs news sullivan's secret service detail is benched pending the investigation's outcome. while sullivan was unharmed, the secret service said in a statement it's taking the matter seriously. catherine herridge, cbs news, washington. we're learning more about the suspect who allegedly killed three people and injured six in the latest mass shooting in new mexico. police say 18-year-old beau wilson was shooting indiscriminately at houses, cars, and pedestrians on monday. they say the first shots rang out before 11:00 a.m., and the suspect was confronted and shot dead just minutes later. at least one of the three guns was purchased legally. the community held a candlelight vigil to remember the victims. they have been identified as 97-year-old gwendolyn schofield,

her 73-year-old daughter, melody ivy, and 79-year-old shirley voita. >> i can't express to you my pain. i can't express how i thought forever these kind of things wouldn't happen to us here. >> family told police the shooter may have had mental health issues. a motive is still unknown. a 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man have been charged with murder in the shooting of a sonic restaurant employee in texas. police say angel gomez was acting disorderly saturday in the parking lot when he got into a fight with the employee, 32-year-old matthew davis. investigators say the boy who was there with gomez pulled a gun from gomez's vehicle and shot davis. they were both arrested. the boy's name has not been released. the head of the artificial intelligence company that makes chatgpt came under intense scrutiny on capitol hill. members of the senate judiciary

committee grilled him yesterday on the dangers posed by the quickly evolving technology. scott macfarlane has the latest. >> reporter: a senate hearing on artificial intelligence began artificially. >> too often we have seen what happens when technology outpaces regulation. >> reporter: the chairman played an ai-generated version of his own voice and words. >> pretty impressive. >> reporter: sam altman, who operates the virally successful chatgpt, compared new advances in ai to the invention of the printing press, but acknowledged the risk. >> i think if this technology goes wrong it can go quite wrong. >> reporter: congress is concerned it risks waiting too long to pass laws to govern ai after failing years ago to set safety rules for social media. >> we should be concerned for our privacy. we should be concerned for our liberty. and we should be concerned for our control over our lives. >> reporter: even the industry itself is urging congress to create safety rules, potentially requiring government approval for future ai innovations. how fast does congress have to

move on this to this keep up? >> i think it's more important to get it right than to move super fast. >> reporter: the tech leaders and lawmakers also recognized the impact of ai on the human work force. >> my biggest nightmare long term is displacement of workers and job losses. >> reporter: as washington mulls its next move, schools nationwide including morgan state university in baltimore, have rolled out new ai programs, training students how to find work in ai, and to ensure it's inclusive. >> we don't know what ai is going to enable us to be able to do, so the work force has to stay nimble. we have to always be learning new things and be willing to educate a new crop of individuals. >> reporter: more congressional hearings into ai are set for later this week. in the meantime, some of the ideas floated already include government safety labels for ai technology and a possible federal agency to license and police the industry. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. coming up, primary results.

"the new york times" reports kentucky attorney general daniel cameron, an ally of senate minority leader mitch mcconnell, won the republican primary for

governor. cameron was endorsed by former president donald trump. he would be the state's first black governor if he beats popular incumbent governor andy beshear in november. and there was a primary election for mayor in philadelphia. former city council member cherelle parker won the democratic nomination. she'll take on republican david oh in november and if she wins will be a key figure in next year's presidential election. "newsweek" says new york city students protested the possibility of asylum seekers being temporarily housed on school grounds. mayor adams said there are plans to house migrants arriving in new york at 20 school gyms. it comes after title 42, the pandemic-era border policy that's been used to turn back migrants, expired last week. one parent who took part in the protest said he's worried for his child's safety. >> i don't feel safe having adult males with no health screenings, no criminal background checks, around our children.

reports retail sales rose by 0.4% last month. economists were expecting to see a higher increase. people seemed to spend the most at car dealerships, restaurants, and on line. millions of americans planning a roadtrip over memorial day weekend may find some relief at the pumps. experts say the average price will be around $3.25 a gallon. that's lower than the national average of about $3.53. while prices are set to drop across most of the country, petroleum analysts say a handful of western states including arizona and california are seeing above-average prices. and taco bell is fighting a rival restaurant for that taco tuesday trademark. the chain filed a petition to cancel the trademark currently owned by taco john's because taco bell claims the phrase should be free for anyone to use. taco john's has own the rights to that phrase for 34 years. that's your cbs "money
