to avert a potentially catastrophic default on the national debt. mr. biden arrived back at the white house last night after the g7 summit in japan. he cut short his overseas trip to deal with the debt crisis. he'll meet with house speaker kevin mccarthy today as the june 1st deadline for raising the nation's debt limit approaches. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the treasury secretary says june 1st is a hard deadline for when the country runs out of money to pay its bills. something that almost nobody wants. so the time, obviously, is of the essence. it was a weekend full of rocky staff negotiations in washington. at one point, republicans insisted talks were going backwards. now today president biden and speaker mccarthy are set to mee. president biden sounded optimistic last night while describing his phone call with house speaker kevin mccarthy from air force one.

>> going well. >> reporter: the president is set to resume in-person talks with mccarthy today on raising the nation's borrowing limit. he said the call was productive after huddling with white house negotiators in his office for over two hours sunday evening. >> i think we can solve problems, but we have to spend less money than we spent last year. >> reporter: a source says the white house called for no increase in defense spending from this year to the next. while republicans are pushing for an increase and steep cuts to all other programs like health care and education. >> i've proposed cuts in spending of over $1 trillion, but i believe we have to also look at the tax revenues. >> reporter: mccarthy says raising taxes is a non-starter. meanwhile, treasury secretary janet yellen gave a dire warning sunday that early june is a hard deadline for congress to act or else the u.s. may have to make

hard choices about which bills go unpaid. so some democrats have called on president biden touse the 14th amendment to raise the debt ceiling without congress. yesterday the president said that he thinks he does have the power to do so, anne-marie, but with the potential for court challenges he doesn't think there would be enough time to actually avoid default. so we'll have to see. >> we'll have to see. jarred hill in new york. thank you. police in kansas city are searching for a suspect after three people were killed and two others wounded in a shooting at a bar. investigators say it happened early yesterday just before closing time. one of the people killed was working security at the door according to a family member. a local rap artist was performing at the bar saturday night. there's no word on what led to the shooting. and the suspect in the grisly murders of four college students in idaho is set to be arraigned today. bryan kohberger was indicted by a grand jury last wednesday. the 28-year-old has not yet entered a plea. under idaho law a trial would

need to happen within six months of when a defendant is arraigned. danya bacchus has the latest. >> reporter: murder suspect bryan kohberger will be back in an idaho courtroom to be arraigned for the stabbing deaths of university of idaho students madison mogen, xana kernodle, ethan chapin, and kaylee goncalves whose parents will be there. >> he's going to know that we are the goncalves family, and he knows, you know, what he did to our daughter, and he's going to feel all of us just staring at the back of his head because he won't even turn around. >> reporter: a grand jury indicted the 28-year-old criminology graduate student on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. >> we would expect that during the arraignment the charges will be read, and he will enter a plea. we expect that that will be a not guilty plea. >> reporter: prosecutors allege kohberger committed the murders at a house in moscow, idaho, november 13th. more than six weeks later in pennsylvania, he was arrested at his family's home.

>> we know that he was arrested based on cell phone data, based on the make and model of his car, and based very importantly on finding his dna on a knife sheath that was found at the scene. the prosecution already, i think, has a number of pieces of really strong evidence here. the defense, i think, at this point will say why would he do this? there is no knife that was found. >> reporter: danya bacchus, cbs news, moscow, idaho. we are hearing for the first time from the marine veteran charged in the choke hold death of a black man on a new york city subway train. 24-year-old daniel penny faces a charge of second manslaughter. it's in connection with the death of jordan neely earlier this month. penny told the "new york post" the confrontation had nothing to do with race and he's not a white supremacist. his attorneys say he was acting in self-defense and protecting other passengers when neely, who had a history of mental illness, began acting in a threatening manner.

yesterday on "face the nation," new york city mayor eric adams said the attention should be on neely. >> our focus should be on how he died, and we need to look at how he lived and ensure that the other jordans out there receive the care they deserve. >> penny called what happened to neely tragic and said, quote, hopefully we can change the system that so desperately failed us. the naacp issued a travel advisory for florida saying the ganizations in proinvigh vernoron desantis. over the weekend the naacp said the state is openly hostile toward african americans, people of color, and lgbtq-plus individuals. when the advisory was first proposed in march, desantis called it a stunt. overseas, ukraine says its forces are still advancing around the edges of bakhmut despite russian claims that it as taken control of the city.

"guardians of the galaxy volume 3" fell to number two with $32 million domestically. hyundai and kia agreed to a $200 million legal settlement, and heinz is out with a new machine that lets you customize your condiments. matt pieper has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter:l stre's best week since march ran out of steam friday as worries mount about the government's efforts to avoid a potentially disastrous default on its debt. the dow last 109. the nasdaq losing 30. s&p 500 down 6 points. hyundai and kia have settled lawsuits over anti-theft technology. the automakers agreed to pay up to $200 million to settle a class-action lawsuit covering about eight million vehicles. the money will be distributed to owners whose vehicles have been stolen.
