can be worked out to raise the borrowing limit. president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy both said that they had a productive meeting at the white house yesterday, but in agreement was reached. afterward negotiators from both sides met late into the evening. jarred hill is here in new york with the latest on all of this. jarred, good morning. >> good morning. president biden and kevin mccarthy have promised to speak every day until they get a deal. while both sides appear to be productive, there's no clear off-ramp here. president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy sounded optimistic after yet another face-to-face meeting on raising the nation's debt limit, but there's still no deal. >> we both agree the default is on the table. >> we still have differences. >> republicans have demanded deep spending cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. sources tell cbs news they offer

to keep spending flat from this year to the next. republicans want to limit increased spending while cutting everything else 22%. >> we're not going to raise the debt ceiling without making a fiscal difference for the future of the country. >> what the republicans are asking for at this point is extreme, outrageous, unworkable. >> concerns over the impasse have moved from washington to wall street. >> this debt ceiling debate is bringing and leading uncertainty in the market. >> to main street. >> i don't like living like this with the government fighting around and, you know, playing games. >> the president and the speaker say they want a deal both parties can support in congress, but the time to get it done is quickly running out. now, talking about the time here, sure, there are nine days until that treasury deadline for default. but, anne-marie, you've got to remember a lot of procedural

matters have to take place before it reaches president biden's desk, and those things take time. speaker mccarthy says he will keep them in session until this gets done. >> i don't know if they're going to like that. jarred hill in new york. thanks a lot. >> no problem. breaking overnight, the secret service detained the driver of a truck that crashed across the street from the white house. police say the u-haul truck ntor shortly after 10:00 p.m. there were no injuries. the secret service tweeted the driver may have intentionally struck the security barriers near the white house grounds. our washington affiliate wusa report investigators apparently found a nazi flag inside the truck. the crash remains under investigation. former magazine columnist e. jean carroll is seeking at least $10 million more in damages from former president donald trump. carroll was awarded $5 million earlier this month after a jury found trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming her in a

civil lawsuit. trump is appealing the verdict. yesterday carroll filed an amendment to a separate defamation lawsuit for comments he made about her on a cnn televised town hall after the verdict. she claims trump demeaned, mocked, and defamed her zbed. the idaho quadruple murder spus expect was in court for the first time since his appearance in january. bryan kohberger briefly smiled at his attorney yesterday before staring straight ahead as the judge read the chrges against him. when asked to enter a plea, the 28-year-old's attorney declined. the judge then entered not guilty pleas on the defendant's behalf. kohberger is accused of stabbing to death four university of idaho students as they slept in an off-campus house last november. in the courtroom, family members of the victims cried. >> what is it like to see him walk in? >> there's no real words for it. you know, as a dad, you want to do it yourself, take care of it, but you can't. the whole world deserves the

process. >> the trial now has a date on the books for november 2nd. police and prosecutors have not publicly discussed possible motives though. senator tim scott has officially kicked off his 2024 the h na lawr one of the mosomi eech during an event yesterday, reflecting on faith and criticizin president biden. at one point scott got into the crowd and said we need a president who leads. >> we need a president that persuades. we have to do that with common sense, conservative principles. but we have to have a compassion for people. >> scott's official announcement brings him into what could eventually be a crowded gop field, including former south carolina governor nikki haley and former president donald trump. the denver nuggets are one step closer to their first nba

championship. >> denver makes history. the nuggets are going to the nba finals for the first time in franchise history. >> well, the nuggets beat the los angeles lakers, 113-111, to complete a four-game sweep in the western conference finals. nick ka jovic led the way for the nuggets. lebron jason finished with 40 points after scoring 31 in the first half. the nuggets will fe either the miami heat or boston celtics in the finals. the heat lead that series 3-0. well, turning now to the war in ukraine as russia's wagner group claims victory in bakhmut. president zelenskyy scored a major military boost. the additional help could give ukraine an advantage in the skies. debora patta reports from kyiv. >> reporter: president zelenskyy has lobbied long and hard for advanced fighter jets.

now after a sudden about-turn in u.s. policy, washington has agreed to let western allies to supply kyiv with american-made f-16 jets and will support a joint effort to train ukrainian fighter pilots on them. ever the master of powerful symbols, zelenskyy used his visit to hiroshima, which was obliterated by a world war ii atomic bomb, to draw comparisons to the devastated city of bakhmut. >> absolutely nothing. >> there's absolutely nothing alive. all the buildings are destroyed, he said. it's simply absolute total destruction. zelenskyy was quick to deny kremlin claims that bakhmut had been taken by its forces, but peering through the dense fog of war makes it hard to determine if the fighting in one of the longest and bloodiest battles in this conflict really has come to an end.

russian mercenaries from the wagner group staked their claim to the city, and the leader of the paramilitary group yevgeny prigozhin posted this video, bragging that his private army had taken control of every inch. and while the ukrainian armed forces admitted losing ground, they said they still controlled areas southwest of the city and were advancing around its flanks. ukraine's rallying cry has for so long been bakhmut holds, but this past week bakhmut has been burning. and the zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was once again cut off from the grid. power has since been restored, but both sides have accused the other of causing the outage. debora patta, cbs news, kyiv. well, coming up, the new search for madeleine mccann.

but an updated vaccine restores your protection so you can keep doing you. four more four more astronauts are on board the international space station including saudi arabia's first woman in space. they arrived yesterday on a spacex capsule on a private flight for houston-based axiom space. retired astronaut peggy whitson who now works for axiom is leading the mission. they'll stay for eight days before heading home. there's a new search for madeleine mccann, and a land mark deal was reached to save the colorado river. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the washington post" reports three western states reached a proposed deal with the biden administration to protect the drought-stricken colorado river. california, arizona, and nevada agreed to significantly cut

their water use from the river for the next three years in exchange for more than a billion dollars in federal funds. the river provides water to 47 million people in seven states, parts of mexico, and more than two dozen native american tribes. the deal still has to be approved by the federal government though. the "associated press" says a 4-year-old boy's body was found in a river days after his 8-year-old sister was found dead. authorities say the children entered the river sunday with their mother and another adult when they were swept away by the current. the girl's body was found less than an hour after the search began. the river had been closed to recreational use because of the high water levels. >> we put two boats in the water, and we had numerous swiftwater rescue personnel on scene. we did unfortunately recover the female deceased under water.

well, before you make breakfast, a warning about an appliance. empower brands is recalling close to 500,000 of its power xl stuffed wafflizer waffle makers. the u.s. product safety commission says the company has received 44 reports of the product posing a burn risk. hot pieces of the waffle or stuffing can be expelled from the waffle maker. they ask that everyone stop using the product immediately. well, meta is hit with a record-breaking fine, and ice cream that you may need to dip into your savings to buy. shanelle kaul has your "moneywatch" report. wall street opened the week with mixed reaction to renewed talks on the national debt ceiling crisis. the dow lost 140 points, the nasdaq gained 62 points, and the s&p 500 gained a fraction of a point. the european data protection board has fined meta a record

$1.3 billion over privacy violations. an investigation revealed meta continued to transfer user data from e after it was banned from doing so in 2021. the watchdog has now ordered meta to suspend all future data transfers within the next five months. and the fine. tiktok is suing montana over its decision to ban the social media app in that state. the federal lawsuit was filed by the app's parent company bytedance. its attorney says the new law infringes on freedom of speech and violates first amendment rights. the state ban is slated to take effect next january. and just in time for summering take a look at the most expensive ice cream in the world. one serving will set you back about $6,400. the gelato called white knight is made with gelato, two types
