sources tell cbs news florida governor ron desantis will announce he's running today during a live event on twitter with elon musk. he'll join an increasingly crowded field taking on former president donald trump for the republican nomination. jarrd hill with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. social media videos are essentially the norm for how presidential campaign announcements happen these days. ron desantis is expected to live chat with elon musk, not something that we've seen before. the florida governor definitely has ground to make up according to the latest polls. the question is will this help. >> i have only begun to fight. >> reporter: sources familiar with the planning tell cbs news that florida governor ron desantis will announce he's running for president later today live on twitter. >> the first time that something like this is happening on social media. >> reporter: yesterday desantis' wife tweeted this video teasing a possible white house bid. >> america has been worth it. >> reporter: desantis will be jumped into a growing field of republican candidates that includes former u.n. ambassador

nikki haley and south carolina senator tim scott. but the biggest challenge will be from former president donald trump. he leads desantis in the latest cbs news poll by more than 30 points. >> he's going to make the argument that he is as conservative as donald trump, but that he has no baggage. >> reporter: the two-term florida governor has led the charge on a conservative cultural crusade signing bills to prohibit classroom discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation dubbed by critics as the "don't say gay" law and ban abortion after six weeks. the naacp issued a travel advisory for the state claiming some recent laws are hostile to black americans. >> we're proud of what we've accomplished in florida. >> reporter: after his expected announcement today, desantis will make his appeal to major donors in florida. sources tell cbs news he also has visits to key primary states scheduled after memorial day. let's talk about the content of what we're expecting later on today.

desantis' allies say he'll cast himself as a fellow culture warrior in the chat with elon musk. a pro-trump action committee is calling him, quote, out of step and unrelatable with what they call a niche campaign launch. a lot to watch out for. >> there certainly is. thank you so much. a 19-year-old driver accused of crashing a truck into a security barrier near the white house is due back in court today. jeff pegues has more. >> reporter: investigators blieve the suspect intentionally crashed the 26-foot rental truck into the barricade at lafayette park shortly before 10:00 p.m., about 100 yards from the white house fence. behind the wheel, authorities say was 19-year-old sai varshith kandula. court documents reveal that he told secret service agents that he flew one way into washington, d.c., from st. louis monday night, rented the truck at

dulles international airport, and drove directly to the white house. he stated that his goal was to get to the white house, seize power, and be put in charge of the nation and would kill the president "if that's what i have to do." the suspect was carrying in nazi flag, and when asked expressed admiration for hitler. a.t. smith is a former deputy director of the united states secret service. how often does the secret service investigate threats to the white house? >> jeff, there are threats made against the white house and the pr proeth-- protectees every day. the numbers tend to go up early in an administration then wane toward the end. >> reporter: threats against members of congress have surged in the last six years. last week a man attacked staffers at congressman gerry connolly's office. last fall a man broke into nancy pelosi's san francisco home and attacked her husband with a hammer. >> what's going on --

>> reporter: the attorney for the 19-year-old said that there is no evidence that the suspect did what he did intentionally. however, the judge in court disagreed. she said she saw the video, saw the u-haul truck slam into the barricade, stop, back up, and then do it again. the suspect is expected to face more federal charges. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. democratic and republican negotiators are set to meet again today to try and work out a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling. some republicans are questioning whether the treasury department's june 1st deadline to avoid a potentially catastrophic default is actually accurate. republicans are demanding spending cuts, while democrats are offering to freeze spending in order to strike a deal to raise the government's borrowing limit. >> 97 days the president wants to meet. we're trying to convince everything in the short timeframe. the house passed a bill, the senate never passed one. it's more difficult.

what else do you have to negotiate with? >> mccarthy said the june 1st deadline can still be met. during a closed door hearing, a russian court extended the arrest of "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich by three months. the 31-year-old american citizen was arrested in march on espionage charges. the court ordered him held until august 30th. the "wall street journal" and the u.s. government have denied the charges. the state department says he's being wrongfully detained. >> the claims against evan are baseless. we continue to call for his immediate release as well as the immediate release of paul whelan. >> whelan, a u.s. marine veteran, is serving a 16-year sentence in russia on spying charges that he and washington deny. today marks one year since a teenaged gunman opened fire at roob elementary school in uvalde, texas killing 19 students and two teachers. memorial service at the now-closed school and around the city remain standing.

a fire on the bus. the driver was taking the kids home from school yesterday when the engine caught fire. the flames spread quickly. the driver got all the kids off before the bus became completely engulfed. the fire damaged several vehicles parked nearby. no one was hurt. there are disturbing new findings in a church abuse investigation in illinois, and there was a record settlement in colorado over a deadly police shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports a family of a colorado man shot and killed by police during a mental health crisis will receive a $19 million settlement. 22-year-old christian glass called 911 last year when his suv became stuck in the snow in the town of silver plume. he refused to get out of the vehicle when police ordered him to. after an hour of negotiations, officers smashed a window and used a taser on him when he pulled out a small knife. he was shot five times. the officer who shot glass and his supervisor face criminal > "the new york times" says mo

than 1,900 children were sexually abused by catholic clergy in illinois from 1950 to 2019. an investigation by the state attorney general released yesterday reveals more than 450 clergy members abused children. that's more than four times the number the church had publicly disclosed before the investigation started in 2018. >> when such trust is betrayed with abuse to children and there are efforts to cover it up, the call for accountability should be resounding. >> the attorney general acknowledged the statute of limitations had expired in many cases, so charges can't be filed. and "the boston globe" says a massachusetts father and son were sentenced to federal prison for a lottery scam that lasted nearly a decade. prosecutors say the men bought winning lottery tickets at a

swim in groups, not wander too far from shore, and not wear shiny jewelry. a british court has ruled against prince harry in a case over his security. harry and his wife meghan no longer qualify for police protection while in the uk after they gave up their roles as senior working members of the royal family in 2020. now harry had hoped to be able to pay for police protection at his own expense, but a court ruled it's unfair to allow wealthy people to buy their own security from the police, and it would strain resources. the buffalo bills' head coach offered an update on damar hamlin's comeback to the game. hamlin has been recovering after he went into cardiac arrest on the football field during a game in january. in april he was cleared by doctors to go back to regular training, but now bills' head coach sean mcdermott told reporters that hamlin has not been practicing but is in the building working. he says that they're taking it one day at a time.
