out here when it's rough weather, this is a dangerous spot. >> climb up the side of the shi 15 stories high and open water with no safety net and zero visibility. take a virtual ride next. >> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello. i am sara donchey. tonight we are talking about a job where one wrong move could be catastrophic. every day, ships the size of skyscrapers maneuver in and out of the port of oakland through channels designed decades ago for much smaller vessels. the army corps of engineers is about to pitch a plan to congress to literally move mountains of mud to speed up the turnaround time. in the meantime we wanted to show you what these container ships are up against. tonight we are an i

out of port. we got exclusive access in 360. >> out here when it is rough weather, this is a really dangerous spot. >> reporter: this might just be the world's most dangerous commute, one that captain zach kellerman makes every single day. >> i climb what this rope ladde up the side of the ship and we do it in all conditions. >> reporter: kellerman is part of a small but scrappy unit called the san francisco bar pilots , a group of master mariners who, for the past two centuries, have been climbing some of the world's largest cargo ships and steering them i and out of the san francisco ba

. they are called bar pilots fo with sandbars on either side. kellerman 's workday starts at pier 9 in san francisco where h boards a small boat that will take him to the port of oakland there he will climb onto a container ship and guide it to the open sea. both state and federal law require a local pilot to take over from the shi captain, then steer the ship in and out of the bay, not just to protect the cargo, but the bay itself. >> when we first started in 195 we were brought on to keep the ship safe from the environment. now we are keeping the environment safe from the ships >> reporter: today, kellerman is sporting a state-of-the-art cargo ship delivering anywhere from $150-$300 million worth of goods to hawaii. the bar pilot

serve as the human link in the supply chain, responsible for almost all containerized goods moving through northern california. as we pull up next to the ship, we get l instruction. >> knows when. >> no swimming. >> reporter: it is a steep clim with no safety net or harness. it is a beautiful day, but this is the bay area after all, and conditions can deteriorate rapidly. kellerman wastes no time. with the help of two tugboats, he slowly pulls the 45,000 ton ship out of its spot and into the channel. his biggest concern is a thick blanket of fog forming on the horizon, the kind that san francisco is known for. >> we will probably be completely enveloped. >> reporter: within minutes, th

fog closes in. going forward, you can't see past the bowel. >> i will look out and make sur he is keeping an eye out there. >> reporter: for the next 20 minutes, captain kellerman is guiding this massive ship through that bay area using radar, gps and his instincts. after 11 long miles of near zer visibility, the ship is safely out of the bay, but kellerman i not out of the woods. after handing control of the ship bac to its rightful captain, kellerman has to rush back to his pilot boat before conditions get too dangerous, but this time he is in the open sea, and that rickety ladder is his only way down. as he is

those words. how in the world did you shoot this? >> reporter: yeah, we were very lucky. we had a team of people who set us up with all these cameras. we had a camera on the pilot as he was going up and down. as you see this right now he has a camera on him that is pulled up. >> very creative. to experience it in virtual reality you basically put on one of these headsets, and you create a worl around you. what if somebody does not have one of these at home and they want to experienc the 360? >> great question. you do not have to have these goggles. these are the latest model, but if you don't have them you can just pull out your phone , literally hold it up and just look out. it is like a portal into another world. it is super

aaron peskin is demanding that mayor breed shut down what he calls the drug supermarkets in 90 days. the mayor has not agreed to that timeline. wilson walker shows us the push for change happening outside city hall. >> you know, people are struggling on our streets and the need to find hope. we as a community need to inspire chang within them. >> people are dying every day o our streets. >> reporter: another day, another event aimed at taking control of the san francisco drug crisis. this one is organized by a group of recover addicts by offering recovery o demand. >> simple concept. have a bed available when someone needs it but that is not the case at al right now its abou10 treatment >> reporter: while this push is

coming from largely outside of city hall, the mayor 's office is plotting change as well. a pilot program that will allow police to detain people, quote, when someone is so far under th influence of drugs that they ma pose a danger to themselves or others, unquote. details will b announced next week, but many o the service providers say that it will be a disaster. >> you can call this whatever you want to call it, but when you prioritize a car several approach to people who need help, you are going to drive th rates up. >> reporter: these are becoming old faultlines in san francisco what is new are the growing calls to try something different, even if they have to make it happen themselves. >> we are going to make this change starting today. >> reporter: so the california department of health says they were close to 42% more

fentanyl -related deaths in 2019. across the bay, a berkeley humane society has more dogs than they know what to do do w rrific iman entire state away. they want to get all these dogs adopted, but andrea nakano reports they are up against an even broader problem. >> reporter: berkeley humane ha about 45 dogs right now. that i way more than usual. it has als seen a large number of kittens. with the shelter being completely full, it really need the community to step up to hel the four-liked friends. >> this is guinness. >> reporter: executive director jeffries or what has been with berkeley humane for more than a decade. >> this is emotionally challenging and physically challenging, but the rewards ar great. >> reporter: zerwick face a challenge when the shelter took in a large number of dogs who needed a home. >> we also had dogs coming in

from the central valley, so it was a busy day at berkeley humane. >> reporter: these are the dogs brought in from the hoarding case. >> the case that we were responding to, there were 18 animals living in the trailer. this was outside of reno, nevada. >> reporter: all of them urgently needed medical care. >> they had flea infestations, social and behavioral problems, and some of them are in need of major surgeries. >> reporter: the medical care and food are a huge expense for berkeley humane, especially at time when donations have dwindled. zerwick also says mor animals are landing in shelters because of the downturn in the economy. >> people can do for their animals and they have to move. they are losing their housing. >> reporter: the shelter hopes to fill up the donation bucket with one of the biggest fundraisers of the year. guinness the puppy picked up hi

lombardi announced that he has worked with the a's and others to put a bill before the nevada legislature that could land the the strip where the tropicana casino sets. there were aloof details, but it did say that a quarter of the cost of this new stadium would be paid for by public funds , but there is already a lot of pushback in oakland, as you can imagine. today the vice mayor tweeted in part, there is no proposal in this release, no real numbers. the officials who think that th a's, who thanked the a's for supporting it don't say they supported. we spoke to alan snell, a longtime sports business reporter about how people are feeling about the a' may be coming to town. he said there are a lot of unanswered questions about this deal, abou the site itself, and most importantly about how much it will cost nevada taxpayers. >> i interviewed a clark county commissioner today and i just asked him, point blank, how muc money is clark county going to

an hour after takeoff. united says there was some kind of mechanical issue that happened just as they made it over the pacific. about 200 passengers were on board at the time. thankfully they landed safely a sfo and were put on another flight to hawaii. jungles look like a broken mess of toothpicks on the islan of guam tonight after a horrifi typhoon ripped through the u.s. territory. it was the strongest typhoon to hit since 2002, and today people woke up to a lot o mangled trees and flooded roads and in some cases crushed and overturned cars. paul is with u now. we see scenes like this this time of year, but it is sa every time you see something like this, because people's livelihoods are destroyed, essentially. >> right. there are a couple hundred thousand u.s. citizens on the island of guam and military personnel. this is a little early for this to be happening this season, so this is out of the ordinary in terms of its intensity and just in terms of the timing of it, before we even get to june 1st, which is not a great harbinger of maybe things to come further down the line. let's switch to

the weather graphic to track where the storm is right now. there is now super typhoon whic is strengthened even more now that it has passed over guam. super typhoons refer to any storm that has winds of over 25 miles per hour. this will track to the west and northwest and approach taiwan by early next week. closer to home we are seeing a cool weather pattern taking hold through the next several days. there is a littl disturbance hanging out not overhead but nearby. it is keeping her temperatures cool and having an impact on the marine layer and how it behaves we will bring in some of our three-dimensional graphics and talk about the impact of what i happening in the upper levels o the atmosphere. you see the big h and the big l on the map. wha this means is how much atmosphere is piled up on top o us. we are getting to the time of year where we see these high building overhead. this means there is more air and atmospher pressing down on us. it tends t

develop very close to ground level and has a hard time makin its way over the hilly terrain of the coastal ranges and some of the inland hills of the bay area , so it tends to be confined to the inside of the bay and the coast and sneaks into the inland valleys. instea what we have right now is an area of low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. there is just less air on top, which means it is exerting lower pressure at ground level. that allows the marine layer to expand, so the cloud cover and fog is able to spread further inland. because it is dispersed through much deeper layer to th ground, it means that it is not quite as condensed. the fog is not as thick. we see a lot of gray skies overhead but no dens fog hanging out near ground level. that will be the case as we head through the next severa days, as long as we are in this weather pattern. visibility tomorrow will be reduced. there

will be some fog, but will not be the dense and compact layer of fog that we get if the weather patterns were shifted around a little bit. the cloud cover will back up towards the coast and we should see fine visibility as we head towards late morning. along the coast the fog will be really tough to shake over the next several day and the low cloud cover as well temperatures at the moment are in the low to mid 50s across th board. we will see these temperatures drop down another couple of degrees, but the air quality, while it has not been looking great, you have seen that haze on the horizon, actua measurable air quality has mostly been fine, either in the good category or the low end of the moderate category. we will keep an eye on that in case som of the smoke from the canadian wildfires drifts down towards us. here are the low temperatures for tonight, dropping down mostly to the low 50s. high temperatures tomorrow remain a few degrees below average near the water, low to mid 60s near the bay, and further inland a good five to 1 degrees below average, reaching only the upper 60s and mid to store on friday before temperatures bounce back over the weekend. not much change fo san jose for sunday. i expect
