for oakland a's fans, the team unveils its vision for their new home on the vegas strip. plus, getting away this holiday weekend? you are not alone. get ready for some company out of the airports and of course on the roads. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook. our top story, the newest sign that the oakland a's are closer than story. >> reporter: the oakland a's just released these renderings of the proposed stadium in las vegas, the governor of nevada announced a tentative deal with the team to fund the new ballpark. the $1.5 billion stadium will be built on the site of the tropicana hotel which is set to be demolished. you can see up close the mgm grand, right in the middle of things, very close to everything on the strip. the stadium would have a partially retractable roof and a fan capacity of 30,000, making it one of the most intimate settings in major league baseball. up to 25% of the cost

would come from taxpayer money and all 30 mlb owners will cast a vote on the relocation but still no exact date on when that is going to happen. nevada lawmakers still have to approve the deal. so, a couple of hurdles but for the fans, this is pretty tough to swallow, we recently talked to one super fan who is coping with the loss 5 years , he is known as bleacher dave. >> for them to abandon a city that supported them when they were trash there's no other wa thin, since the wa san francisco and the raiders moved to vegas, he is sad for himself but also for the future generations of oakland sports fans. meanwhile, the future of the coliseum here in oakland is still uncertain without the a's, but there has been talk of

bringing in a wnba team and possibly a soccer team, the roots. dave said no matter what sports comes in, you can count on him to be in the stands in oakland. >> i don't know, seeing those plans , it's a little bit like your ex-boyfriend showing wedding plans. it's like salt on the wound. we are better off. we have moved on. absolutely. i'm over it. good riddance. another big retailer has plans to leave its prominent space in san francisco but it the lease expires. the gap said the way it leverages flagship locations has changed since they opened in the 90s but they are already working to identify new locations in downtown san francisco that will better serve the needs of the business and its customers. it is the start of the

memorial day holiday weekend, and aaa is projecting that 42 million americans will travel 50 miles or more . about 37 million are expected to drive to their destinations. here is a look at highway 24, heading toward walnut creek, not bad right now, the traffic is moving. this is surprising considering it is the afternoon on friday before memorial day. here is a look at the bay area roadways, not so bad right now, but people may not be off work yet. 580, 680 and dublin not looking too bad considering this is before a holiday weekend. we have your driving forecast for this afternoon and for the very busy weekend. >> if you are getting ready to hit the roadways, you are doing it in what is going to be some of the busiest times to travel especially for today for but, 101 580 , some y, gotobe

of the busiest routes, that is where we are anticipating to see extra busy locations for the weekend. and certainly today we will see the heaviest until about 6:00, expect delays. if you can get an early start, that is probably better, or you might want to wait until after the evening commute , after 6:00 might be a little bit better if you are trying to hit the roadways. let's talk about bottle rock, that is going to be busy as well because this is happening throughout the weekend. if you want to head up there and you haven't booked your parking, good luck with that, it is all booked up and it's not available. the bus might be your best option, amtrak as well. if you are going to use a rideshare, that is at third and randolph, so definitely keep that in mind. and complementary parking is also available, but they are expecting a lot of people around that area, so extra busy conditions right around the

area near the napa valley expo . but it should be a lot of fun. also happening this weekend is carnival, that is saturday and sunday, saturday is the festival, sunday is the parade. the parade launches at 10:00 on sunday morning, but street closures will be in effect, some of them start this affected, the parade route will also be affected. you will definitely see some reroutes around that area, definitely give yourself extra time. bart is a good way to get there, but bart has upgrades happening this weekend, but you have other options. it should be a lot of fun, all the closures should reopen by sunday afternoon at 4:00 but you will see a lot of people out there especially for the parade on sunday. aaa is expecting nearly a 3.5 million people to fly this memorial day weekend. we went

to sfo to check out the friday getaway. >> reporter: here is what we have been saying, at times you are going to get to the security checkpoint without much of a line but be careful, you will see waves of people start coming in ahead of their flight. this was early this morning at terminal 2, there were big groups of people making their way out. we have an idea as to why people are traveling. a three-day weekend is a good opportunity for a soccer tournament, we have seen moheadinto e couner nalikewashington anis a y to prepare? lisa is heing to a soccer pe thmotoroad and travel here and make sure we are ready to go through the gates. >> reporter: we also spoke with nick and ben, they were rushing by a little bit. >> but, they got to sfo only

about one hour before their flight. >> i feel like we are okay. we are not worried. we should probably get going. but, not too bad. >> reporter: luckily for them, this is how the lines were looking as they were heading to their flights. give yourself extra time, especially with days like this where at times we are seeing waves of people. there are airports throughout the country that are going to be busy including other ones in the bay area like san jose and oakland international airport as well. so remember, everybody is heading to a destination so be extra considerate of others. good advice, thank you. this is video from this morning, officials are expecting about 366,000 passengers over the next week. and oakland international is expecting about 130,000 passengers through monday. and like gianna mentioned, bottle rock is officially underway in

has resulted in some pop up showers and thunderstorms in the high sierra over the past few days, that is going to be the case over the weekend, too. we are seeing sunshine over san francisco and it's going to be a similar pattern through the weekend. we will start off with a lot of low cloud cover and fog and that will back up to the coast but, with such a stubborn marine layer, it's going to take a while for that to happen. the temperatures are cool, the warm start s san jos low 60s in livermore, the temperatures are going to close around 60 degrees for the first pitch, then steadily dropping off through the rest of the evening. the fog is going to be spreading across the bay as we go through the evening as well. the futurecast shows a mixture of clouds and fog . either way, it is going

to be a great start to the day across the entire bay area, gradually the fog will back up. and by noon, it is still hanging out for parts of the north bay and the bay itself. not seeing any substantial clearing until farther into saturday afternoon. temperatures tonight dropping down to the low to mid 50s for most of us, just a few cool spots. high temperatures tomorrow about where they were today, which is about five degrees below normal around the bay, mid 60s. only a couple degrees above average along the coast but 5 to 10 degrees below average further inland. and low 70s likely in the santa clara valley. the long-range forecast, the ten-day outlook from the climate prediction center, and the 8 to 14 day outlook from the same range, into the first full week of june, mostly showing a continuation of that pattern of below average temperatures.

above average temperatures staying well to the north. be prepared to deal with similar conditions for the foreseeable future. low 60s in san francisco, mid 60s for oakland in the east bay . temperatures in the north bay upper 60s around 70 through the holiday weekend, not much warmer than that for the santa clara valley. more of a warm-up by wednesday, thursday and friday. but, the warmest spots in the east bay are only going to hit the mid-70s. along the coast, stuck in the mid to upper 50s, transitioning to june gloom. that sounds more depressing than it is. it's what you expect. >> that is why you love the bay area, you have to savor the sunshine when it arrives. still ahead, mixing the old with the new , we are looking at plans for a new center in san francisco's mission district. to restore some of what community members say has been lost. and

celebration but in san francisco's mission district, there is a need for restoration, the community is still reeling the effects of the pandemic, lost lives, lost income and economic stress. but, there are plans for a new healing center that seeks to get back to indigenous ways of dealing with life's problems. >> so, here we have our humble altar. >> reporter: steve is a navajo elder that was trained by his elders to be a traditional practitioner, a person knowledgeable in the ancient methods to help heal the mind, body and spirit. he uses his knowledge to help young people on the reservation break free of drugs and alcohol. >> we remind them that they are not what drug they are using , that is just the human experience and we can overcome that. >> reporter: he ought to know because he's also a former flagstaff city judge in arizona and he's visiting the american indian friendship

house in san francisco to help mission district community leaders plan a new wellness center of their own, based on the traditional indigenous methods. >> my medicines don't have the side effects, we have herbal medicines that have ancient knowledge that deal with every part of our being. dealing with the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical, so much of this world is just focused on this one, physical. just dealing with the symptoms, they don't deal with the underlying factors. >> reporter: that is the inspiration behind the indigenous peoples cultural arts healing center which will be built in the new permanent home on florida street. they cannot replace western medicine in all cases but it can be an alternative and supportive resource for people who are suffering. >> we are going to be working to heal the community, going back to our indigenous ways ,

by having our native american brothers and sisthere and we have people today that are taking four or five different pills, we want to get the people off the drugs. >> reporter: latinos and native americans started working more closely together when both communities for the brunt of covid cases during the pandemic . collaborative solutions to community needs like the mission food hub grew out of that experience, as well as the just completed 130 unit affordable housing complex on the building's upper floors. >> we have known for a long time that we have to address housing. housing is a healthcare issue and a lot of our people don't have housing. >> reporter: the center will have creative spaces for art, dance and music which can also help soothe the soul. the nonprofit behind the center and carnival is now trying to raise $5 million to complete the project in time to be a healing resource for people still feeling the effects of

the pandemic. >> we realize that we can go back to business as usual, the pandemic really taught us a lot of lessons, so this is an opportunity to go back and live simple and be able to give people hope and courage and strength. fu ful another american indian philosophy that will affect the next seven generations. >> you can watch the grand parade this sunday at 10:00 on cbs news bay area, streaming on the free cbs news app and on our sister station. coming up, a curious creature at one bay area zoo, look at that thing.
