negotiators in washington. we'll have the key sticking points as the clock ticks down to a potentially catastrophic default. and later, nine lives. these so-called ghost cats were driven to the brink of ex tecs tinks, but are pouncing back. >> protects your way of life. >> yes, sir, it does. >> announcer: this is the "cbs weekend news" from chicago with adriana diaz. good evening. all eyes are on capitol hill tonight as the deadline for a possible government default closes in. both president joe biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy insist a deal is close. more on that in a minute. we begin this memorial day weekend at the national mall. thousands are turning out at the poppy wall of honor. the red flowers symbolizes bloodshed and lives lost in service since world war i.

there are more than 645,000 flowers lining the wall this year. and as always, many of us are on the move for the holiday weekend. whether by ground or air, travelers are feeling the impact of the economy both good and bad. cbs's shanelle kaul is at new york's coney island with more. good evening, shanelle. >> reporter: good evening. from the beach to the boardwalk, this is a hot destination for people this memorial day weekend, and just as the weather is heating up, so, too, is the travel season. beaches across the country are opening up. here on new york's coney island visitors are basking in the sun and opening their wallets and business owners are ready to cash in. >> now that we have memorial day weekend coming up, you can see how busy we will be this season. >> reporter: according to aaa, at least 37 million americans will drive at least 50 miles from home this weekend.

that's 2 million more than memorial day last year, but still below pre-pandemic levels. drivers may save a little bit of money. nationwide gas prices are roughly one dollar cheaper than last year. travelers are also crowding the airports. in april, airfare jumped 2.7% from march, while it's down slightly from last summer, it's nearly 10% higher than it was before the pandemic. >> we are seeing high demand in travel and with that we're seeing high prices. >> reporter: sally french is the lead travel writer for nerdwallet. >> people. expect to pay more for travel than they have in even the past couple of years. >> reporter: hotels are also up 3.5% from last year, and 15% more expensive than in 2019. some americans are staying closer to home, going to parades like this one in chicago, honoring those who served in the armed forces. in little rock, arkansas, middle school students placed flags on gravestones of fallen soldiers.

back here on coney island, families are settling in for this busy holiday weekend. >> it feels amazing. anytime you get out and enjoy the weather, it's always a good time. >> reporter: and driving to a destination like this may be a more affordable option this had year. the cost of renting a car is down about 11% since last year. but what you save there, adriana, you may be spending on food. we can tell you the cost of dining out is up 9% since last year. >> it sure is. shanelle, thank you. and if you are headed to the beach depending where you are, you may need to take sunscreen or an umbrella. here is meteorologist paul goodloe from our partners at the weather channel. >> millions of americans are heading to the beach this weekend, but the beaches across the southeast, especially the carolinas, not cooperating thanks to this coastal low. it's not tropical, but, wow, is it bringing some weather into the area. not even tropical weather.

it's been kind of chilly. it's been rainy and windy across the area. that low comes onshore and our beaches slowly improve south caroli coast, north carolina coast the end of the weekend, the north carolina coast, but the mid-atlantic your weather going downhill deeper into the weekend. this low lots of wind, creating surf and very dangerous surf conditions from, say, new england beaches all the way down through the florida beaches. so be weather aware and especially at the beaches here for the rip current risk, which is sky high in some locations. adriana. now to the debt ceiling and the danger of default. both sides are urging calm and assuring a deal had be reached, but the very real possibility of default lies just days ahead. cbs's christina ruffini is on capitol hill. christine, a i read negotiators were there until 2:00 a.m. this morning? >> reporter: that's right, adriana. we learned that president biden who is at camp david for the

weekend is scheduled to speak with speaker mccarthy by phone later this evening. you mentioned there were negotiating teams late last night, back at it this morning only to emerge around midday. we saw speaker mccarthy and he said they were taking a chipotle break. they returned with chips and queso for the press and went back to the closed-door session. they say progress is being made and republican negotiators say they are getting closer on the big stuff. but there are still some sticking points on. so smaller more specific issues, including a gop ask for work requirements to be attached to nutritional benefits and other welfare programs, including what's commonly called food stamps. >> so does a deal appear imminent? >> reporter: i think everyone is hoping that. i will say both sides seem more optimist you can in the last 24 hours but they don't have a lot of time because speaker mccarthy promised the 72-hour waiting period for lawmakers to review the bill before a vot ahen it still has to go through the senate. but the good news is the treasury department said this

week they have five extra days until the u.s. reaches its borrowing deadline. so, hopefully, they can get it worked out in time. adriana. >> thank you. tonight the texas house of representatives voted to impeach texas attorney general ken paxton by an overwhelming bipartisan vote. he faced 20 articles of impeachment, including accusations of bribery. paxton denies any wrongdoing calling the charges political theater. he is immediately removed from office pending a trial in texas senate. a top russian official cautions that the increased supply of western weapons to ukraine risks escalating the war to a level not yet seen. this comes as ukrainian officials are countering with a warning of their own. cbs's debora patta is in kharkiv. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. ukraine has increased speculation that a counteroffensive is imminent with a video released today

brandishing its intention to destroy the enemy with an i way of western-supplied weapons. ukraine has upped the ante in the slickly produced video showing troops preparing for battle with those western weapons, including american-made armored vehicles, artillery and rocket launchers. it was posted by their commander-in-chief with a message, the time has come to take back what is ours, and ends with his men chanting defiantly. moscow has stepped up its attacks ahead of the looming counteroffen counteroffensive hitting a medical facility in dnipro yesterday. but russian fighters waging war not in ukraine p but on russian soil. the partisans are a collection of disparate groups united by

their desire to topple vladimir putin. cbs news sent questions to one of those units. we are destroying military targets and infrastructure, this masked gunman said. like power lines. the heavily disguised fighters also said this video shows them setting off an explosion and attacking an electrical substation. we cannot independently verify the group's claims. earlier this week a different group of anti-putin fighters launched a daring cross-border raid inside russia's belgorod region and video posted on social media today claims there was heavy shelling in that same locale. as to the long awaited counteroffensive, the head of ukraine security offense council said today it could happen tomorrow, the day after that, or in a week.

>> deborah pa that, thank you. on the california coast high bacteria levels are closing beaches in los angeles and as far south as san diego. there is another problem threatening pools and beaches. a nationwide lifeguard shortage. elise preston is poolside in los angeles. good evening, elise. >> reporter: good evening to you, adriana. millions of americans are playing in the water at pools, beaches and rivers, but a shortage of lifeguards could make this a dangerous holiday weekend. children make a splash in los angeles. >> it's fun and relaxing. >> reporter: in washington, d.c., mayor muriel bowser kicks off the city's summer pool season and thousands flock to florida beaches. americans just want to be in the water. >> they try to rush me out. the faster we get here, the more they get to be in the pool. >> reporter: with increased demand comes danger. new york city is facing its worst lifeguard shortage on

record with roughly a third of what it needs this summer. the situation is so critical nationwide that about half of the country's 309,000 public pools will be forced to close or reduce hours according to the american lifeguard association. >> it is more than just a job. lifeguards have a unique advantage of letting people know that there is danger and to stay out of that danger. >> reporter: wyatt werneth, who patrols some of florida's beaches, says your chance of drowning in front of a lifeguard is about 1 in 18 million. still, with low salaries, a lack of qualified applicants and rigorous testing, it's tough to find lifeguards. >> our agency here requires about 50 lifeguards. we only had two for tryout. >> reporter: now, the lifeguard shortage could get worse as summer months continue. so cities are offering incentives. in phoenix, for example, lifeguards are getting $3,000 bonuses. adriana.

cbs's omar villafranca has the story. >> here is oswald. at the police station. >> reporter: 12 hours after president john f. kennedy an assassinated in dallas, reporters from all over the world were crammed into police headquarters trying to interview the suspect. lee harvey oswald. >> i got jostled, i'm small, so i got pushed behind the door one time. i'm pummeled. >> this is a situation now. >> reporter: bill mercer was a reporter with cbs station krld. he just got a tip from a cop that oswald had been charged with murdering the president. something that oswald didn't know until mercer broke the news to him on camera. >> you have been charged. >> sir? >> you have been charged. you have been charged with the murder of the president. wow! and he looked at me. what? and i said, you have been charged with the murder of the president. so that was my greatest interview in television.

>> reporter: almost 60 years later, camera number three from that interview finally belongs to dallas' sixth floor museum. it chronicles the jfk assassination in school book de. >> oh, my gosh, there it is. >> reporter: and earlier this career, 97-year-old mercer was reunited with that piece of history. >> this is particularly special because we have the footage. we have the artifact and we have the man who was reporting that news. >> reporter: she is the ceo of the sixth floor museum and says decades later physical artifacts are still popping up from that moment in time. >> we need to have physical items that animate people's imaginations and try to step back into an historic moment. >> reporter: camera 3, which is almost too heavy to lift, will go on display later this year to commemorate the 60 years since jfk's death. for mercer it's a piece of

if you are out in nature this weekend, watch out for wild animals. we end tonight with a wildlife success story. once nearly extinct, the florida panther is slowly making a comeback. here is cbs's manuel bojorquez. >> a panther just walked out. >> reporter: reclusive and elusive. the florida panther is often called the ghost cat. to see one it's either a zoo or the rare and accidental encounter. >> oh sha, my god. holy [ bleep ]. >> i have seen two florida panthers in the wild with my own eyes. >> reporter: they are that elusive? >> they are completely elusive. there kwo be one looking at us right now and we'll never see it. >> this project has been the hardest thing. >> reporter: wildlife photographer carlton ward has been hunting panthers digitally

for 20 years. the film intimately showcases the struggle for survival. >> they need a lot of manned. a single male panther needs 200 square miles. >> reporter: we met him at the edge of the florida wildlife corridor, a project he founded. it's a mosaic of still wild and undeveloped stand stitched together and owe casually assisted with infrastructure. >> the nature preserve and the cattle ranch and citrus grove and timber farm and state forest together as this connected green space that panthers call home. >> reporter: human conflict drove panthers to the edge. first livestock ranchers removed big cats by any means necessary. next came urban sprawl and the often fatal encounters that came with it. the ghost cat almost vanished entirely. conservationists have patiently brought panthers back from edge. >> for decades the imposing caloosahatchee river prevented panthers from moving north of the everglades.

>> that had been the dividing line for five decades. no female panthers have been seen north of that river since 19 1973. >> reporter: but then a small miracle. somehow a female panther north of the river nicknamed babs. >> she is amazing. >> she is a pioneer. she swam the river. >> reporter: for ward, babs became an obsession. >> people connect with beauty. people connect with their hearts. and to see the eyes of these panthers and to see the beauty of the habitat and the place where they live. >> reporter: now with their numbers creeping above 200, florida panthers have a new and unlikely ally. yes, cattle ranchers. at least some ranchers like elton langford. protecting the panther also protects your way of life? >> yes, sir, it does. >> reporter: he says the same

om cbsnews bay area, this is the evening edition. today was the start of san francisco's 45th annual carnaval, and many people got the chance to show off their dance moves at the huge street party. and in san francisco, on a weekend where people spend lots of time outside, some local kids are learning how to stay safe while biking through city streets. bart officials have issued an apocalyptic statement about what will happen if the state doesn't give them more money, but do they really deserve it? we'll have that story coming up. thanks for joining us. i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm andrea nakano.

holiday travel is back this memorial day weekend, and here's a live look at the bay area airports. the tsa is saying they've screened more than 5 million passengers in the past couple of days. yesterday was the highest single day number since thanksgiving of 2019. people driving into san francisco had a tough start to the day because there was an accident in the middle of the bay bridge. traffic nightmare after a multicar collision. there was some police activity in the middle of the bridge. chp was able to reopen lanes by 2:30 in the afternoon. the back up remained for hours. and because we're covering traffic, let's see what weather is going to be like. here's darren peck. well, we'll start out with a quick look ahead to the forecast for the holiday. i just want to give a view of what things will look like around here. for memorial day, we still have a really nice sunday coming our way. but if we just jump ahead to monday, we're going to start out in one of the cooler spots. well, the coolest spot, actually.
