celebrations honoring our fallen heroes. good morning, good to be with you on this memorial day. i'm shanelle kaul in for ann marie green. now that president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy have reached a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling they voenl days to convince both parties to sign on. the country says will run out of its money to pay its bills on june 5th. ian lee has the latest from london on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there are many across the country and frankly the world breathing a sigh of relief this morning. president biden called the agreement a compromise, while house speaker kevin mccarthy called it worthy of the american people. >> we've got good news. >> reporter: president biden praised the tentative deal struck late saturday night to avoid a catastrophic government default. >> that agreement now goes to

the united states house and to the senate. i strongly urge both chambers to pass that agreement. >> reporter: on capitol hill, house speaker kevin mccarthy says he's confident he will get the votes. >> we did a confidence call with our conference and over 95% were overwhelm wemmingly excited about what they see. >> reporter: in an op-ed in "the wall street journal," mack carthy wrote, we are changing the direction in washington with a responsible debt increase which restores growth to the economy. the agreement would raise the debt limit for the next couple of years. keeping nondefense spending roughly the same through 2024, while protecting social programs, like medicaid, social sk security and new programs for veterans health care. but it places new work requirements on some who get government assistance, including food stamps. even before seeing the bill's details, some lawmakers from both parties criticized it. >> i'm not happy with some of the things that i'm hearing about. >> reporter: but party leaders

sounded hopeful they can push it through. >> can you guarantee people that we will not see a default? >> yes. >> reporter: the first test could come as early as wednesday. with a vote in the house. and it's not over yet. democratic and republican leaders now have to move the bill through congress and to the president's desk before june 5th. that's when the treasury says it would run out of money to cover all of the u.s.'s obligations. >> thanks so much. there is an historic battle brewing in texas, after the republican-led house vote to impeach the state's embattled attorney general, ken paxton. astrid martinez takes a look next as republicans decide whether to remove one of their own. >> reporter: a controversial rising republican star takes a texas-sized fall. >> today is a very grim and difficult day for this house. >> reporter: the state's

attorney general, ken paxton, now heads to a trial in the state senate, after house members impeached him by an overwhelming bipartisan vote. >> 121 ayes and 23 nays. the resolution is adopted. >> reporter: paxton faces 20 articles of impeachment, including allegations of bribery, abuse of public trust, and being unfit for office. paxton denies any wrong doing, calling the vote illegal and unethical. >> he put the interest of himself over the established laws, policies, and procedures, of the office of the attorney general. >> reporter: a republican-led investigative committee spent months looking into paxton over years of scandal. >> several members of this house received telephone calls from general paxton personally threatening them with political consequences in their next election. shortly after the vote, former president donald trump rushed to paxton's defense. and in a tweet, texas senator ted cruz called the impeachment a travesty.

ken paxton is suspended while the texas senate decides whether he should be removed from office. his wife angela paxton, a two-term senator is, among those deciding his fate. she has not said if she will be recusing herself. astrid martinez, cbs news, new york. breaking overnight, rescuers in davenport, iowa, are searching for people unaccounted for. this, after part of a six-story apartment building collapsed. authorities have not said whether anyone was killed or is still trapped inside. they said seven people were rescued yesterday, and some were treated for injuries. officials said work was being done on the exterior of the building when it collapsed. police in new mexico were investigating a deadly shooting at a motorcycle rally. authorities say three men were killed saturday in a shootout between rival biker gangs, during the annual rally in the town of red river. at least five others were hurt. police say the shooting followed

an earlier altercation between gang members in albuquerque. three bikers face charges, including two who were wounded. overseas, turkey's long-reigning pr president will rule for another five years, after winning a runoff election. turkish president erdogan won 52% of the vote in yesterday's runoff, extending his increasingly authoritarian rule now into a third decade. in a victory speech in front of a sea of supporters, he said rebuilding cities destroyed by devastating earthquake earlier this year is his priority. president biden said he looked forward to, quote, continuing to work together, as nato allies. ukraine says russia unleashed a new wave of drone and missile attacks overnight. targeting military facilities and critical infrastructure. ukraine's military says it shot down dozens of drones and cruise missiles, some targeting the capital of kyiv.

it follows other air attacks on kyiv saturday and sunday, that left one person dead, including the largest drone barrage since the war began. millions of americans are heading home today, from the busy memorial day weekend. aaa estimated 37 million people will hit the road between last thursday and today. that's an increase of more than 2 million from last year. aaa says the worst time to drive today is between noon and 3:00 p.m., the best is before 10:00 a.m. and the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice were honored in our nation's capital. ♪ and i would do it for you ♪ for you. >> singh singer philip phillips was one of the artists paying tribute last night at the 34th national memorial day concert on capitol hill. the event was hosted by actors gary sinise and joe mantegna. veterans of the korean war were

who had to be carried away by officers told them he felt suffocated and tried to get off the plane quickly. they said he was mentally struggling. he now faces up to ten years in prison. the advocate says the search for a baton rouge teenager missing in the bahamas has been called off. the u.s. coast guard says 18-year-old cameron robbins disappeared last wednesday, after going overboard on a ship. the high school baseball player was on a graduation boating trip with several hundred other high school students. witnesses said he was acting on a dare when he jumped overboard. the search was called off on friday. "the new york times" says vice president kamala harris became the first woman to give the commencement address at west point. she told about 950 cadets on saturday that they're graduating into an increasingly unsettled world. harris also talked about how the military has evolved. she pointed to this year's 75th anniversary of the integration of women in the military, and

an amazing ancient discovery in egypt. crews say they found new tombs and workshops used to mummify humans just outside the capital. the tombs were apparently for a priest and top official from ancient egypt. all right, are you firing up the grill this memorial day? your holiday barbecue could cost more this year, erica brown has today's money watch report. >> reporter: the markets are closed today in observance of the memorial day holiday. on friday, the dow climbed 328 points and the nasdaq gained 277 and the s&p 500 was up by 54 points. if you're planning to fire up the grill this memorial day, some of those barbecue basics are going to cost a bit more this year. the essentials including hamburgers, hot dogs, ketchup and mustard, cost an average of 9% more than last year. analysts say the cost of ingredients like sugar and wheat are driving up retail prices.

ford and tesla are teaming up, in a new deal that would give ford electric vehicle owners access to tesla's massive supercharger network. starting early next year, fords could plug into one of the thousands of tesla charging stations in the u.s. and canada. ford president and ceo jim farley says the deal will more than double ford's charging network as the company prepares to launch a new series of electric vehicles in 2025. the little mermaid is making a big splash at the box office. disney's live action remake starring hallie berry is expected to earn more than $117 million this memorial day weekend and the fifth largest memorial day weekend opening ever. the fast and furious franchise's tenth installment "facility x" takes second place in marvel's guardians of the ga galaxy volume three rounds out third this holiday weekend. that's your cbs money watch this
