thousands gather every year at thspot for memorial day. more than 30,000 soldiers are laid t rest there and anne makovec has a look at remembrances across the bay area. it is always our honor to do that. >> and it was a variety of remembrances today. hundreds of people took some time to reflec on the sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces. remembering those who did not come home. let's start in alameda. uss hornet. the world war ii aircraft carrier hosted the color guard. a wreat toss and squad flyover. we spok to one veteran who served on a carrier close to the hornet and was there to remember close friends he lost during vietnam. >> it is important to all the people of the united states. those who died protecting our country. it is particular to me because i lost at least three

friends two were pow six-and-a-half years and others who were killed in combat. >> the event at orange memorial park in san francisco focused o teaching kids the history of th holiday. families were able to see the veteran's memorial plaque and eternal flame. >> it is a way of recognizing the sacrifices that our young women and men have made continue us to allow to speak freely. live freely in a countr that has the riches of the world. now we know all too ofte that there are other countries that don't have the blessings that we do. so we need to respect and honor that and continue to remember what they did. >> 2023 marked 70 yores since the end of the war. music from the walnut creek concert band. president biden and vice

war. then it was called declaration day. president johnson made it official federa holiday in 1971. >> and we are glad it happened. we know you have a soft spot in your heart for your dad. i love my dad. my dad lost friends. it's a meaningful moment to pause and remember. thank a veteran if you see one who was able to go home. thanks. lots of people outside today. so let's bring in meteorologist darren peck. a beautiful day. >> there is this one persistent patch of gray that has been hanging out over the north bay today. san jose, you have a fantastic looking memorial day. 71-degree. plenish of sunshine. if we look at the big sunshine, there is the 71 and sunshine. there is the persistent marine layer which has been parked ove most of the north bay. so the temperatures there are perhaps as much as 15 to 20 degrees below average for where we woul be on a normal day this time of year. should be around 80. san francisco at 62, today. that's

your memorial day. here is the overview for what most inland parts of the bay are having. lo 7 0z. plenty of sunshine. and when we look at the daytime highs for everybody. you can pick out your part of the bay there. the story is the same. everybody is cool and below average. and we have this to thank for it. see this counterclock wise spin? that is driving our weather. i will tal to you about how this is about to change and we will see the noticeable impact it has toward the end of the seven day forecast coming up in a few minutes. reed, see you then. >> all right my friend, thank you so much. now to the stories around the bay area. in san francisco, police say one person is fighting for their life after a stabbing in chinatown. let's go to video now. it happened at th aa bakery and cafe in stockton and jackson. you likely know that spot there. the victim rushed to the hospital around 10:00 that morning. police say they detained a possible suspect. it is just a detention but we have not had confirmatio from police if they have gotten

to the point when they could call it an all-out arrest. we will keep asking the question and let you know. a man from ohio shot early this morning near oracle park. the shooting happened near the luma hotel. in fact it happened just after midnight. the suspec is on the loose. former therano founder elizabeth holmes is expected to report to prison to serve her sentence. she is set to serve nearly 11 years at a minimum security federal camp after trying to make every lega move she could to stay out. look at this. this is a big one for everyone looking to buy a home in california. state far says they are no longer going t accept new applicants for home and business insurance in our state citing what they call growing catastrophe exposure. that decision and that language is makeing the rest of the state's real estate industry really nervous. elise preston explains. >> reporter: hail, wild fires,

and flooding. it is the unofficial start of summer and homeowners in the golden state are in the grip of weather whiplash. >> you can never be complacent. >> reporter: now state farm say it is no longer accepting new applications for homeowner's insurance. insurance expert fre fisher. >> i think it is very troubling >> reporter: state farm partially blames an increase in catastrophic events like the 7100 wild fires last year and rising construction costs. >> when you have a thousand or more homes in the various fires all being total losses, that's significant hit for any insurance company. >> reporter: what is the aw for a me bayer? >> everything that you may need to be covered for your property is going to require you ask for it and pay for it. >> reporter: state farm says in the future, it could revisit this change which does not affect car insurance policies. the company will continue to serve existing customers. live look at washington dc

now that the house and house republican leaders have reached a compromise to raise the debt ceiling. they did it to avoid a damaging government default. bi question now is whether there i really enough votes for a bipartisan bill to pass. here i natalie brand with our nation's capitol. >> reporter: with a debt ceilin deal in place, the next hurdle for house speaker kevin mccarth remains shoring up support. >> it's not 100% what everybody wants but the country will be stronger. >> reporter: president biden expressed confidence it will reach his desk. >> i feel very good about it. spoken to a number of the members. >> reporter: the bill would lif the debt ceiling for the next two years. it would keep non-defense spending at roughly the same levels through 2024. but would prevent cuts to socia security and medicare as well a the military and veteran's programs. it also claws back some new funding for the irs as well as unspent money from covi relief funds. it would loosen some environmental rules for ne

energy projects and temporarily add work requirements for some receiving social safety net programs including food stamps. while some progressive democrat and conservative republicans ar pushing back against the bill, party leaders are sounding hopeful enough members will vot in favor. >> the bipartisan resolution wa the only way forward. >> reporter: natalie brand, cbs news capitol hill. natalie, thank you for that here's what's next. if it gets to the rules committee, a full house vote is expected wednesday. lawmakers face a jun 5 deadline to get it passed. that is when the treasury says the u.s. would risk a debt default. so we are watching thi in the hours and minutes ahead. still ahead at 3:00, he survivorred world war ii. on hi 100th birthday, a veteran from alamo shared some wisdom with our john ramos. we will let you

transportation. that was a live look at sfo where we are lookin at a record setting travel weekend. the tsa screened nearl 5 million flyers on friday and saturday nationwide. myself and my kids included. thank you for getting us through. the majorit of memorial day travelers were not in the sky but on the roadways. here is what you need to know if you have a loved one who is driving or you plan to drive later today or tomorrow. the busiest time to get on the roads about noon to 3:00. the top place people in san francisco are going this weeken was a surprise, napa. beautiful napa. and the travel agency say that will happen tomorrow morning. this is a live look at westbound 580. this is live right now. that road is busy even when it is not a big holiday. a lot of stop and go and our thanks to bob horner wh has that camera mounted so you can see in realtime what the traffic is. millions of americans playing in the

water. at pools and beaches and rivers. there is a shortage of life guards. that could this a dangerous memorial holiday. the life guard association says the situation is so critical nationwide that about half of the country's 309,000 public pools will be forced to close or reduce hours the shortage blamed on low salaries. and rigorous testing that makes it hard to find people who apply. >> it is more than just a surge life guard haves a unique advantage of letting people kno there is danger and to hasta ou of that danger. >> cities are now offering incentives to potential life guards in phoenix where new lif guards are getting about $3,000 as a bonus just for signing on. in the meantime, keep an eye on the person in the pool that you are with. time for a look at our forecast with first alert chief meteorologist darren peck. is this swimming weather in the bay? >> yes. barely. if you are okay with 70 degrees, i think most kids wouldn't mind. >> kids don't feel it. >> no. doesn't matter. pool's

there, they are going in but we are like 10 degrees below average. and we should be doing 80 here inland. 80 would be average. we could be a lot hotter than that this time of year. we are doing low 70s mos of our inland locations. we wil use the example, san jose. live picture over downtown. 717 here if we go over to the top of the sutro tour, there is a marine layer creeping in. interesting situation today. with more the clouds are and where they aren't. they are not so much over here. but if we use the high resolution satellite, and the last few hours, there has been a stubbornly persistent patch of gray. you haven't gotten much sunshine at all. yo see what's going on and why it has been so persistent. if you look at the big picture, look a the counterclock wise spin. the are helping to develop the marine layer a little bit deepe and then the flow getting pulle into that is routeing all of

that stuff. just persistently right into the north bay. so yo have may gray that may not brea today. if you use the high resolution forecast model, it i still convinced you will see some sun as we play that forward. maybe not a lot. because we are losing the point in the day. i think it will get a little better than now. it ha been a lot more persistent than it would be. area of low pressure. right off the coast. so that is helping to deepen th marine layer. the reason we are 10 degrees cooler than we shoul be. the reason why there are more thunderstorms popping up across the sierra as we go through each afternoon. it is a unique situation now. the majority of us are experiencing that. this way with daytime highs going in about 10 degrees below average. low 70s inland. and you should be right around 80. so we will start breaking this pattern the end of the week. if you look at the seven

day, there's a subtle warming trend on there. so oakland, you'll be near 70 by friday. th city may not change a whole lot you are not experiencing anything all that extraordinary in the city. it is just a typical may day. if you are inland like north bay valleys. you will represent the south bay. sunny, 80. and right on th mark for average for this time of year. that is actually a really nice place to be when yo are in late may headed into june. and by then, we will pretty much be there. we will made it into june and probably some of the best weather you could hope for. there will probably be some june gloom mixed in. but it will be pretty nice. >> all right, we will take nice setups with a thank you. the holiday weekend in alamo included a celebration of the 100th birthday of a world war i veteran. on this major milestone, he shared advice wit our john ramos. >> reporter: the american flags

outside round hill country club are in honor of those who are n longer living but inside, alfre gross was celebrating his 100t the yodon't look a day over 9 to me. >> i don't feel a day older tha 99 either. >> reporter: he is one of a dwindling number of veterans wh served in world war ii. he enlisteded in the navy after pearl harbor and became skipper of this convoy ship. hunting e boats in the atlantic. he helpe free prisoners of war from the island of boreno. >> we said where are the americans? the japanese didn't let them live. they worked them to death and that was it. to me that was the best thing i ever did in the war. i felt like i accomplished something.

>> reporter: later he enjoyed a 68 year marriage to the love of his life and bellow bridge partner marilou until she passe away in 2014. it is clear alfie has gone through some tough times but in all the pictures h seem to be the guy with the biggest smile on his face. >> i always had a very happy disposition. i always smile. people ask me how are you. i always say no complaints. even if i have complaints because i know they really don't care. that's my outlet. and so, i am known around where i live as no complaint al fie. >> reporter: life aboard a ship taught him the importance of getting along with people. he didn't let politics or religion ruin morale so he is concerned about the political division in the u.s. today. >> people don't know how great this country is. you know peopl died for it. you have to get

along to keep surviving. but there will be somebody who will come forward, you'll see and we'll make it. this country is too good not to make it. >> happy birthday to you! >> reporter: so as four generations of family and friends toasted alfie on reaching this milestone, he attributed his long happy life to good genes, a good family, a lot of luck and not a single complaint. >> happy birthday alfie. thanks for your service. coming up at 3:00, the bridge builders makin sure the the fallen are not forgotten this memorial day.

seeing that beautiful bridg there is a nice reminder that w are bridge builder ins our community and we celebrate them when we see and meet them. dozens of volunteers across the bay area spent their weekend paying tribute to those who gav their lives and service to our country. case in point, this wa the scene at golden gate national cemetery over the weekend. boy scouts, veterans and community groups doing the work to honor fallen soldiers with memorial day flags. the bo scouts will come back, do more service to remove the flags to

keep the graves clean this saturday. in san jose, boy scouts placed flags on the graves of oak hill cemetery. >> we are here to honor our heros. it is teaching respect for our scouts and a service fo them. >> we are honoring them through putting flags on their graves t say we appreciate what you did. and you gave up your life for us. that is what is keeping democracy and freedom. >> and thanks to karen and wayn for teaching the next generation. you know nationally scouts have been honoring falle veterans on memorial day for 70 years. it has become one of the largest service projects from the entire country. >> we got a secret about bikers they ride the motorcycles. they rumble, but man they have big
