son's job was dangerous and it ended up costing him his life. why the parents of a security guard shot and killed on the job say the d.a. is adding insult to unimaginable injury. >> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. will get to that story in a minute, but first a huge story in the sports world. it is the end of an era for dub nation. this man constructed the bay area dynasty as we know it. warriors president and gm bob myers is stepping down, making a tearful announcement today. certainly big news for sports in general, not just the bay area. vern glenn is here with moore off the top on why interestingly enough it was not all about the money. >> yeah. he had $8 million, a deal that was north of an $8 million salary. it is a unique
1:39 am
job, sarah. you and i, we do a newscast and we go home and get some sleep, but this guy, no, not bob myers. he is not allowed to ever unplug! you don't do that if you spend 12 years building a winner. this job consumes not just some of you but all of you! after delivering four titles, two executive of the year nods, myers has a june 30th expiration date for the demands and rigors of a job that we know maybe 2% about. >> the strain is powerful and moving, but i got to get off. >> reporter: with that, bob myers became the first member of the warriors dynasty core to step away from the team after winning four titles in 12 years as golden state's general manager. >> things do change. as much as we would like them to last forever, they just don't. >> reporter: this season, golden state had to deal with draymond green punching jordan poole and losing in the second round to the lakers. but myers
1:40 am
said that did not factor into his decision. >> there were some tough things this year. some people asked me, if the team wins the championship, would you leave? i think yes. you know, if this was a perfect year it might still have been the time. >> reporter: this comes before an off-season in which the warriors will figure out the contract and futures of draymond green, klay thompson and jordan poole. >> the future is bright and i have confidence in what is to come and i have no doubt that much success will still be forthcoming. >> reporter: as for what's next, myers is unsure after a career spent around the nba. >> maybe it will be good for me to sit still. i don't know how good i will be at it, but i have never done it. maybe i can figure some things out. i don't know what's coming.
1:41 am
>> reporter: myers has got two kids and he has missed a lot of moments of their lives. a job with no days off where the phone always needs to be on, better not turn that ringer off! a deal could happen at 4:00 a.m. so it appears he is going to watch the grass grow under his feet for a while. his next move is probably honey do chores. sarah? >> all right, vern, very understandable. thank you for bringing that update. now we turn to our top story. 26-year-old blake mohs was working for a pleasant and home depot. his mom said that he used to talk to her about shoplifting, that it worked all the time at work. he said people would sometimes pull out weapons. it was enough to worry her as a mother, and in the end her worst nightmare came to pass. mose was killed on the job when a shoplifter shot and killed him. as betty yu reports, his family is worried they will not see justice. >> reporter: 26-year-old blake
1:42 am
mohs was shot dead by a shoplifter at home depot, who stole a charger for a power tool. according to police, benicia and the getaway driver were arrested. >> my son was only 26. he did not even see the gun. he did not have any idea. he was doing his job and it was over. he was back in the store safe. this woman came back for him. >> reporter: blake's mom choked back tears, six weeks to the day after her son, a loss prevention employee, was killed at the pleasanton store. at the time, the family said that the district attorney never reached out. it was only after consistent outreach that a d.a. responding to the case responded. >> the phone call was that pamela preis was not going to meet with us. she was not going to have a conversation with us.
1:43 am
we discussed my concerns about the charges. the fact that we were not being kept in the loop. >> reporter: 's parents were told the price had a full schedule until mid-june. they also learned both suspects are felons. >> she is facing murder charges and something called little gun, which is five years. it is not robbery or intent to rob. there are no special circumstances or enhancements being added. we were told by the d.a. that we should expect non-because it is the policy of pamela preis. it does not make any logical sense in my heart or anything. >> reporter: blake was sent to get married in august and aspired to be a police officer. he was active with the boy scouts his entire life. lori said that her son loved his job, though it could be dangerous. >> he talked about guns being pulled on him. he talked about the mass amounts of shoplifting. it was in pleasanton and in every store.
1:44 am
he worked all of alameda county. >> reporter: since price was elected on a platform of tough sentencing, several longtime prosecutors have left her office, which faces increasing scrutiny for doing away with most sentencing enhancements under her leadership. >> she is not allowing us to grief. that is the reality. she has got us so focused and stuck on fighting for justice that we don't get to process any of the emotion. we don't get to process what christmas looks like. so this one is really special just because -- >> reporter: lori showed us their last family photo. >> the hugs were the best place to be and i could really use one of those. >> reporter: we reached out to the district attorney's office for her side of the story on our way to interview the family this evening. we should know

1:47 am
like a divorce with irreconcilable differences. >> it is super interesting but i will not ever tell you that. >> reporter: the person filling her shoes is a florida-based defense attorney who has represented clients throughout the u.s. as well as puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. he also says he is 100% persian, something that legal experts say is appealing to nima momeni and his family. photos highlight clients he is defended and cases he has won, including kodak black and former basketball star lamar odom. he will take over a case with a mountain of evidence to dig through, including recent court filings that show still images from surveillance at the millennium tower. the pictures show lee leaving the building with a man believed to be nima momeni. this paints a picture of a lawyer who does not shy away from a fight and he has had tough words for
